I was motivated to write my autobiography after reading “Up Against Odds”, the autobiography of Cosmic ray Physicist, PS Gill, who was my mentor in Physics at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh. My journey in science has been a life of struggle for a rural boy of Punjab. Reaching Marie Curie University, Paris (1970-72) for higher studies leading to Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics was my dream project. This book is based on trials and tribulations of my life; hurdles in scientific research; creation of Physics Department in GNDU Amritsar and setting a new record of publications in inter-disciplinary areas of research. The Foreword is written by Daya Singh Sandhu, Director of Research, Lindsey Wilson College, Columbia, KY 42728 (USA).

Pioneers of Cosmic Ray research in India: 1940s was glorious era for Cosmic ray discoveries. PS Gill in FC College, Lahore and then in AMU Aligarh; HJ Bhabha in IISC Bangalore and then in TIFR, Mum bai and DM Bose in Kolkatta were the flag bearers of Cosmic ray research in India. Biva Chaudhary, a young Bengali lady was torch bearer in JC Bose group, who found evidence for meson decays in nuclear emulsion plates in 1944, much before the Powell group in Bristol won the Nobel Prize for discovery of pi-meson in 1947. ... Post-independence Indian science as a medium of national development offers an opportunity to engage with the West beyond the straightjacket of domination and subordination. This ambivalence is reflected in the conception and materialisation of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), established under the guidance of Western powers to strengthen India’s technological progress. Being delivered ... [Show full abstract] from the West, IITs created conditions of sameness and difference, leading to a situation where the West and India transformed each other, with major implications for ideas of development and nationhood. This article focuses on IITs, particularly IIT Kanpur, as a site of collaboration and contestation, where engineering and politics often crossed, negotiated and resisted each other. This also led to situations where science’s materialisation through machines, such as computers, blurred the experiential difference between the West and India. Such boundary crossings created new scientific subjectivities that traversed beyond the nation and de-territorialised the practice of science.
