Abstract

How do you define a good concept when designing augmented reality apps for mobiles? This paper focuses on design processes technically, graphically and conceptually in the development of 3D content for Augmented Reality on mobile devices. Based on experiences in the development and implementation of a course in 3D design for Augmented Reality at NITH (The Norwegian School of IT), challenges and methods in creating concepts, optimized graphics and visually coherent content for AR will be discussed.

Although Augmented Reality technology was first developed over forty years ago, there has been little survey work giving an overview of recent research in the field. This paper reviews the ten-year development of the work presented at the ISMAR conference and its predecessors with a particular focus on tracking, interaction and display research. It provides a roadmap for future augmented reality research which will be of great value to this relatively young field, and also for helping researchers decide which topics should be explored when they are beginning their own studies in the area.

Norwegian visual effects and digital design studio, Placebo Effects created a free mobile augmented reality interactive 3D coloring application that allowed users to play with the images in a narrative featuring two animated cows as part of an ongoing campaign by Norway's largest dairy producer, Tine.

This paper provides a logical and methodological reconstruction of the evolving concept of Augmented Reality (AR) and also of the paradigmatic shift in art, caused by this emerging technology. It starts with an analysis of the notion of Augmented Reality, that leads to the construction of a conceptual model and a definition which together capture the nature of present AR applications. This is followed by a detailed conceptual analysis of major types of Augmented Reality that contribute to an understanding of current concepts. Finally, the resulting conceptual models are applied to the newly emerging field of Augmented Reality Art in order to assess the paradigmatic potential of AR as a new artistic medium. The paper puts a strong emphasis on the effective and adequate visualisation of the analysed conceptual frameworks, in order to promote a better comprehension of the logical structures underlying the notions of Augmented Reality and AR Art. This paper was intended to be presented at the opening of the First International Symposium on Augmented Reality Visualisation and Art, proposed and chaired by the author as part of the 16th International Conference on Information Visualization, IV2012.

Augmented Reality (AR) has been one of the most important research areas in mobile and interactive application. This paper presents a novel mobile rendering method using the surrounding light sources. The location and color intensity of the environmental light such as a fluorescent lamp is computed with Android mobile device. The proposed system is able to generate more natural AR images with the shadows reflecting the surrounding light distribution.

Light source estimation and virtual lighting must be believable in terms of appearance and correctness in augmented reality scenes. As a result of illumination complexity in an outdoor scene, realistic lighting for augmented reality is still a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a framework based on an estimation of environmental lighting from well-defined objects, specifically human faces. The method is tuned for outdoor use, and the algorithm is further enhanced to illuminate virtual objects exposed to direct sunlight. Our model can be integrated into existing mobile augmented reality frameworks to enhance visual perception.

Producing digital stories for mobile Augmented Reality applications poses a number of creative and technical challenges. This presentation covers lessons learned from the production of the TineMelk AR app and key issues and possibilities to be aware of when creating interactive AR stories for the mobile platform.

In this paper, we describe the effects of shadow representation of virtual objects in augmented reality. Optical consistency is important in order to create realistic augmented reality environments. We focus on providing accurate shadows and made two assumptions about the effects of shadow representation of virtual objects. First, that the shadow of virtual objects provides a stronger connection between the real world and virtual objects and so increases virtual object presence. Second, that the shadow of virtual objects provides depth cues and so makes three-dimensional perceptions easier for the users of the interface. We report on two experiments that show that these assumptions are correct. We also find that users report that a characteristic shadow shape provides more virtual object presence in spite of incorrect virtual light direction.
