Abstract

As most actors, salesmen, and lovers know, first impressions are often the most important. When approaching private foundations or corporations for project funds, the crucial first impression is often created by the preliminary letter. This letter has to be brief and concise, yet sufficiently comprehensive to tell the first program officer who reads it who you are, precisely what you want to do, how much it will cost, and why you believe the addressee will be and should be interested in the proposed activity.
