Besides the method of naming stars, described on page 165, it was decided that capital letters before the genitive of the Latin name of the constellation be used only from A to Q. Letters from R to Z were to be reserved for variable stars, such as R Coronae Borealis, U Geminorum, etc.

Two new variable stars observed in the field of the extrasolar planet host star WASP-3

We report the discovery of two new short-period variable stars in the Lyra constellation, GSC2.3 N208000326 and GSC2.3 N20B000251, observed at the Astronomical Observatory of Autonomous Region of the Aosta Valley. Photometric measurements collected during several days are presented and discussed. One star appears to be a delta Scuti pulsating star (P=0.07848018+/-0.00000006 days; pulsation ... [Show full abstract] amplitudes V=0.055 mag and R=0.045; average (V-R)=0.378+/-0.009, probable spectral type F2). Th identity of the second star (P=0.402714+/-0.000008 days) resulted more difficult to be understood. We propose that this object should be classified as an eclipsing binary system where 0.065 and 0.055 are, respectively, the depths of the primary and secondary minimum in the light curve, as observed with a non standard R filter. First supplement to the catalog of observed periods of AP stars

Supplementary data on the periods of Ap stars with references are presented; 58 new stars are introduced for which periodic variability has been discovered since 1983. For some of these stars periodicity was known before 1983 but they were not reported in the previous catalogue. Recently attributed variable star names are also reported.

Polarization of Variable Stars

The changes in stellar polarization with time were first discovered in 1958 by GRIGORYAN (1958) for the red supergiant µ Cephei. In subsequent year BEHR (1959) gave a hint in a footnote to his catalogue that the emission-line B-type star α Cas seems to have variable polarization. However, several years had to pass before these discoveries were confirmed and the changes in polarization with time ... [Show full abstract] for the red giants and supergiants and for the emission-line B-type stars were firmly established, first by the observations made by SHAKHOVSKOJ (1963, 1964) and then by COYNE, GEHRELS (1967) and the writer (SERKOWSKI 1966, 1968). The changes in polarization with time were also found for the RV Tauri and T Tauri stars, R Coronae Borealis stars, novae, Wolf-Rayet stars, and white dwarfs. The rapid changes in polarization with time indicate that the polarization is not produced in the interstellar medium but in the vicinity of a star; such polarization is called intrinsic.

We present a new electronic version of the first volume of the General Catalogue of Variable Stars (GCVS), fourth edition, which contains data on 10558 variable stars in Andromeda-Crux (the constellations are ordered in the Catalog according to the Latin alphabet). This version incorporates the name lists of variable stars from no. 67 to no. 76 for the same constellations. The main distinctive ... [Show full abstract] feature of the new version is that it provides improved equatorial J2000.0 coordinates for 10349 stars (including those for 4587 stars corrected for proper motions). These are based on identifications with positional catalogs using finding charts and on our new measurements. We searched for a number of stars on original plates from the plate collections of several observatories. The version also includes a file of remarks to the first GCVS volume and a preliminary version of the file of bibliographic references to the entire fourth edition of the GCVS. Apart from a complete update of the positional information, the new version incorporates all the other corrections that were found to be necessary after the first GCVS volume was published (1985).

Variable stars may have been known since antiquity, but one particular type of star is all important in the multiplicity of applications to our understanding of the universe. How and why some stars vary is a study that was essentially started by the Cepheid variable stars, a group of objects bunched under the name of their progenitor, δ in the northern constellation of Cepheus the King.

A Recurrence Time versus Orbital Period Relation for the Z Camelopardalis Stars

We examine AAVSO (American Association of Variable Star Observers) light curves of 16 Z Camelopardalis systems with measured orbital periods, with particular focus on intervals away from standstill. CzeV - The Czech Variable Star Catalogue

We present the first release of the Czech Variable star catalogue that currently contains 1228 stars whose variability was discovered by 60 Czech observers. The catalogue contains confirmed variable stars of various types, but also candidates. We give precise coordinates, cross identification with other catalogues, information about constellation, variability type, brightness, light elements, ...
