SONAR: Communication System for Supporting Information Gathering and Social Interaction in a Niche Market
Abstract
We propose a new communication system by which niche people can obtain cross-cutting information and communicate with other people based on each personality. The system graphically displays the degree and direction of other people’s hobbies who are interested in the keyword niche people input, and relation between the knowledge e.g. movies, music, animation, history, geography using nodes. So, we can search friends who have similar interest and direction in hobbies. From the demonstration experiments, we obtained good results that the system could help niche people to gain and exchange useful information.

Tasks that involve large information spaces overwhelm workspaces that do not support efiicient use of space and time. For example, case studies indicate that in- formation often contains linear components, which can result in 2D layouts with wide, inefficient aspect ratios. This paper describes a technique called the Perspective W'aU for visualizing linear information by smoothly in- tegrating detailed and contextual views. It uses hard- ware support for 3D interactive animation to fold wide 2D layouts into intuitive 3D visualizations that have a center panel for detail and two perspective panels for context. The resulting visualization supports efficient use of space and time.
The total environments to which individuals have been exposed throughout the lifestages from birth to the present time have been composing the individual and community lifestyles. Such lifestyles are known to determine the risks for developments of cancers, circulatory diseases, and other chronic diseases. To establish new theory and practice programs for disease prevention and health promotion in the environmental and preventive medicine, we have quantitatively investigated correlations of lifestyles, or ways of daily living, to comprehensive health potentials in the cohort of industrial workers. The total lifestyles were evaluated by the originally-designed 8 health-practices such as smoking, alcohol-drinking, physical exercise, and working and sleeping patterns. The data indicate that individuals having good lifestyles showed much younger health ages calculated based on the health-check-up data, and lower risks for developing lifestyle-related diseases than those with poor lifestyles. The physical health potentials were assessed by the biomarker-measurements such as lymphocyte chromosome-DNA alterations, natural-killer activities and serum IgE levels. The psycho-mental health potentials were evaluated by both the quality-of-life-related questionnaires and the stress-related hormonal and cytokine levels such as cortisol and interleukines. The comprehensive health potentials have been shown to be significantly lower in poor-lifestyle people than in good-lifestyle ones. The changes in poor to good lifestyles through health education and learning were also shown to result in promotion of such health potentials.
Recent years have witnessed the dramatic popularity of online social networking services, in which millions of members publicly articulate mutual "friendship" relations. Guided by ethnographic research of these online communities, we have designed and implemented a visualization system for playful end-user exploration and navigation of large scale online social networks. Our design builds upon familiar node link network layouts to contribute customized techniques for exploring connectivity in large graph structures, supporting visual search and analysis, and automatically identifying and visualizing community structures. Both public installation and controlled studies of the system provide evidence of the system's usability, capacity for facilitating discovery, and potential for fun and engaged social activity
We present a virtual reality application called VR‐VIBE which is intended to support the co‐operative browsing and filtering of large document stores. VR‐VIBE extends a visualisation approach proposed in a previous two dimensional system called VIBE into three dimensions, allowing more information to be visualised at one time and supporting more powerful styles of interaction, The essence of VR‐VIBE is that multiple users can explore the results of applying several simultaneous queries to a corpus of documents. By arranging the queries into a spatial framework, the system shows the relative attraction of each document to each query by its spatial position and also shows the absolute relevance of each document to all of the queries. Users may then navigate the space, select individual documents, control the display according to a dynamic relevance threshold and dynamically drag the queries to new positions to see the effect on the document space. Co‐operative browsing is supported by directly embodying users and providing them with the ability to interact over live audio connections and to attach brief textual annotations to individual documents. Finally, we conclude with some initial observations gleaned from our experience of constructing VR‐VIBE and using it in the laboratory setting.

This includes considerations of physical tools such as ink, design factors, optical art and perceptual factors, colour usage, information content, aesthetics, text and tables. A method for visualizing hierarchically structured information is described. The tree-map visualization technique makes 100% use of the available display space, mapping the full hierarchy onto a rectangular region in a space-filling manner. This efficient use of space allows very large hierarchies to be displayed in their entirety and facilitates the presentation of semantic information. Tree-maps can depict both the structure and content of the hierarchy. However, the approach is best suited to hierarchies in which the content of the leaf nodes and the structure of the hierarchy are of primary importance, and the content information associated with internal nodes is largely derived from their children
Textual query languages based on Boolean logic are common amongst the search facilities of on-line information repositories. However, there is evidence to suggest that the syntactic and semantic demands of such languages lead to user errors and adversely affect the time that it takes users to form queries. Additionally, users are faced with user interfaces to these repositories which are unresponsive and uninformative, and consequently fail to support effective query refinement. We suggest that graphical query languages, particularly Venn-like diagrams, provide a natural medium for Boolean query specification which overcomes the problems of textual query languages. Also, dynamic result previews can be seamlessly integrated with graphical query specification to increase the effectiveness of query remements. We describe VQuery, a query interface to the New Zealand Digital Library which exploits querying by Venn diagrams and integrated query result previews.
