Shaft Cryostat on the Basis of a Closed-Circuit Refrigerator for
Neutron Powder Diffraction Studies in the Temperature Range 6Ä300 K
A description of a cryostat on the basis of the closed cycle refrigerator CoolPower
5/100T for operation in the temperature range 6.2Ä300 K is presented. The cryostat
is intended for a sample up to 18 mm in diameter and up to 100 mm of length.
The reload of the sample placed into the ampoule, which is made of TiZr alloy, is
performed at any temperature of the refrigerator with the help of an insert. Thermal
connection between the sample and the heat exchanger of the refrigerator second step
is performed with the help of heat exchange gas helium-4. The minimal temperature
of the sample is 6.2 K at the accuracy of the temperature stabilization of the sam-
ple 0.1 K. Measurement and temperature stabilization is performed by a controller
connected with a computer. Dependences of temperature measurements on time at
cooling and heating are presented. The shaft cryostat was developed to carry out the
experiments on neutron diffraction from powder samples.
The investigation has been performed at the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics,
JINR.

... We have developed top-loading shaft cryostats for the neutron diffractometer DISK (Kurchatov Institute, Moscow) [1], the neutron powder diffraction complex PDC (PNPI, Gatchina) [2], and the cryostat [3], which is currently used on the neutron spectrometer NERA (JINR, Dubna) [4]. These spectrometers possess an arrangement of detectors in the horizontal plane that defines vertical orientation of cryostats. ...
... The experience obtained during the operation of top-loading cryostats [1][2][3] indicates that helium pressure of 2 mbar is more than sufficient for a good contact of the sample with the wall of the sample chamber. ...

Based on the development of top-loading cryostats a horizontal-loading cryostat for cryomagnetic research at the diffractometer DN-12 of IBR-2 has been developed. In this regard, it is necessary to study the value of the heat inflow due to the heat exchange gas in the horizontal-loading cryostat. For this purpose an express GM cryocooler cryostat has been performed. This cryostat has a vertical stainless steel tube, which is connected to the second stage of the cryocooler by means of a copper thermal bridge. The tube was filled with helium gas and the cryostat was installed in several positions by rotation relative to the vertical axis in the range of 0–180 degrees. During the experiment, the temperature of ends of the thermal bridge was measured. It is experimentally shown that the heat inflow due to the heat exchange gas is insignificant in any position of the cryostat. The pressure of the heat exchange gas was 0, 2, 10 and 20 mbar.
... The Laboratory of Neutron Physics of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research has accumulated wide experience in creating cryostats for the neutron scattering facilities. In particular, the vertically loaded cryostats were designed for a DISK neutron diffractometer (CE, Moscow) [1], a neutron powder diffraction complex (PDC) (Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute, Gatchina) [2], and a cryostat presented in [3] was constructed, which is currently used at the NERA neutron spectrometer (the IBR-2 reactor, Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna) [4]. These spectrometers record neutron scattering in a horizontal plane, which determines the vertical orientation of the cryostats. ...

A vertically loaded cryostat with a shaft diameter of 80 mm based on a GM SRDK415D cryocooler for operation in the temperature range of 4–300 K is described. This cryostat can operate both in vertical and horizontal positions, almost without losing the final temperature. The time-temperature curves of the sample chamber in the temperature range of 4–150 K in the vertical and horizontal positions of the cryostat are presented. The temperature is adjusted using the controller. Before the experiment, the 25-mbar pressure of heat exchange helium gas is set in the shaft. The cryostat is designed for operation at the NERA spectrometer of the IBR-2 reactor at the Laboratory of Neutron Physics of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research.
... Construction of the cryostat is presented in Fig. 2. The cryostat lets one to work with samples of 70 mm in diameter and 200 mm in length. Principal construction decisions and operate features of analogous cryostat were presented in [1]. Figure 3 presents curve of the sample temperature at the cooling process. ...

The world first samples of Ti and Nb tubes joint with stainless steel ones by an explosion welding by the JINR-VNIIEF-FNAL-INFN cooperation were manufactured in the frame of ILC R&D programe. An applying methods of relaxation of residual tensions (after explosion and electron beam welding), macro- and microanalyses of welding seam and cryogenic tests of the samples produced manifest the achievement of high mechanic strength (≈250 MPa/share) of welding seam, solidity and leak absence on 10−10 l atm/s level at 1.8 K. The explosion welding technology and methods introducing to industrial manufacturing of the 4-th generation of cryomodule of TESLA TYPE DESIGN can exclude the Ti—communications, connect the Nb—cavity with stainless steel vessel and reduce significantly the accelerator cost.

Sample environment equipment, cryostats, fur-naces, pressure cells etc. are an essential adjunct to most neutron scattering experiments to induce the sample being studied into a phase or state of particular interest. He we give a brief overview of the diverse range of Sample Environment equipment that is currently in use, a back-ground to its development and also some recent trends.
