[Show full abstract] microzonation of the Central Archaeological Area of Rome, which includes the Palatine Hill, Roman Forum, and Coliseum. In particular, the present paper details the results of one and bi-dimensional site response analyses carried out within this project, focusing discussion on representative cross-sections. The peculiarity of this work stems from the fact that it represents the first systematic study on the seismic site response of Rome’s historical centre based on a robust subsoil model which integrates a large amount of available and original geological, geophysical and geotechnical data. Investigation of the physical phenomena responsible for site effects shows that ground motion distribution is mainly controlled by 1D resonance phenomena and 2D effects associated with soft alluvial valleys bordering the Palatine Hill, a deep paleo-valley and, to a lesser extent, topography and the morphology of anthropogenic deposits. The analyses show maximum amplification factors, defined in terms of Housner Intensity, as high as 1.4-1.8 over the period range of 0.1-1.0 s. Such values can be significantly relevant for the monumental and archaeological heritage of this area, as many are highly vulnerable due to their great age.

[Show full abstract] challenges to geotechnical engineers in all parts of the world during design and construction process. In Germany, peat is one of the prevailing groups of soil which is present in both off-shore and on-shore areas and exhibit properties such as high compressibility and low shear strength; these properties may cause complications such as differential settlement or failure in structures built on such soils. Removal or stabilization are the most important methods used to overcome geotechnical problems related to peat soilsâ engineering characteristics. In New Zealand, many off-shore and on-shore areas of the North Island are covered by volcanic ash, and weathering of this material has resulted in formation of clay minerals. Dredging of volcanic ash layers often causes major turbidity in the water column and poses risks to wildlife and humans. Due to very low effective shear strength and high sensitivity of volcanic ash, these sediments are not considered to be appropriate for off-shore construction and installation purposes. On-shore weathered volcanic ash having low permeability acts as a barrier to fluid flow, for example infiltration of rainfall, and prevents pore pressure from dissipating. This special characteristic may lead to failure of slopes with volcanic ash materials because increases in pore pressure lowers the effective normal (vertical) stress, and therefore shear strength. The aim of this dissertation is to utilize in-situ and laboratory measurements in order to (i) present soil mechanical intervention for stabilization of peat using cost-effective and environmentally-friendly stabilization method and focus on a comparison between mechanical characteristics of undisturbed and stabilized peat, (ii) investigate geological setting, lithology and depositional history of off-shore sub-seafloor volcanic soils and determine geotechnical properties of near-surface sediments and (iii) look into the role of volcanic soils in occurrence of on-shore landslides.

This report is a synthesis of ten years of researches in different domains of mechanics, and it is composed of three principal parts. The first one concerns the PhD researches on the optimisation of the hull of an offshore platform of TLP type. [Show full abstract] the procedure for the determination of the minimal weight hull's dimensions. The second part concerns a research in the field of non-linear mechanics: the use of the Asymptotic Numerical Method (ANM) for the detection of equilibrium bifurcation points of an elastic structure and for the following of the post-critical equilibrium branches. After a brief recall of the ANM, the theoretical formulation of the research is presented, along with some numerical examples and a discussion of the results. The third part concerns a series of researches in the domain of composite materials mechanics. The common feature of these researches is the use of the polar method in analysis, design and identification of laminates. After a detailed presentation of the polar method, the researches made in this field are divided into four main parts. Chapter 8 deals with uncoupled and quasi-homogeneous laminates, and namely it puts in evidence the discovery of quasi-trivial solutions and their properties. The design of partially or fully isotropic laminates is also concerned, as well as that of laminates composed of square symmetric plies. The feature of all these studies is the entirely theoretical approach, with the discovery of exact solutions for each one of the mentioned problems. Chapter 9 presents a new unified formulation, under the form of a classical problem of non-convex structural optimisation, of several laminate design problems, while chapter 10 deals with a new genetic algorithm, BIANCA, for laminates design and optimisation. Still in this domain, chapter 11 shows a theoretical and numerical study on the sensitivity of certain solutions to layer orientation errors. Chapter 12 concerns the discovery of a particular type of plane orthotropy, named R0-orthotropy, whose rather singular characteristics are put in light, along with the way to obtain such plies and its advantages. Finally, chapter 13 is about the use of the polar method in composite elastic and strength properties identification.
