However, the electronic structure of the defect, the nature of optical excitations and other related properties are not well-understood. Here we present advanced \emph{ab initio} study on SiV defect in diamond. We determine the formation energies, charge transition levels and the nature of excitations of the defect. Our study unravel the origin of the dark or shelving state for the negatively charged SiV defect associated with the 1.68-eV photoluminescence center.

Noise-induced contrast enhancement using stochastic resonance on singular values

[Show full abstract] has been found to give remarkable response when applied on the singular values of a dark low-contrast image. When an image is represented as a summation of image layers comprising of eigen vectors and values, the singular values denote luminance information of each such image layer. By application of DSR on the singular values using the analogy of a bistable double-well potential model, each of the singular values is scaled to produce an image with enhanced contrast as well as visual quality. When compared with performance of some existing spatial domain enhancement techniques, the proposed DSR-SVD technique is found to give noteworthy better performance in terms of contrast enhancement factor, color enhancement factor and perceptual quality measure.

Determination of melanin types and relative concentrations: An observational study using a non-invas...

Objective: Melanin is a major skin colour pigment that is made up of eumelanin (the dark brown-black colour) and pheomelanin (the light red-yellow colour) pigments. To assess and improve treatment efficacy, it is important to have a measurement tool that is capable of determining the melanin types objectively. So far, the efficacy assessment is subjective. In this study, an inverse skin reflectance pigmentation analysis system that determines eumelanin and pheomelanin content is developed and evaluated in an observational study involving 36 participants with skin photo type IV. Methods: The reflectance spectra of the left forearms of participants were analysed by the pigmentation analysis system to determine their skin parameters--pheomelanin and eumelanin concentrations, melanosome volume fraction, and epidermal thickness. The determined skin parameters are then inputted into the realistic skin model (RSM) of the Advanced Systems Analyses Program (asap®) to generate the ground truth reflectance spectra for the given skin parameters to validate the system. Results: The developed pigmentation analysis system is found to be accurate with a spectral error of 0.0163 ± 0.009 between measured reflectance and the reflectance output of the analysis system and RSM. The regression analysis shows a strong linear relationship (R(2) = 0.994) indicating good precision. The relative concentrations of pheomelanin (38.23 ± 15.04) and eumelanin (1.68 ± 0.91) analysed by the system gives a ratio of pheomelanin to eumelanin of 0.048 ± 0.029; this value is consistent with previously reported figure of 0.049. Conclusion: The proposed pigmentation analysis system is able to determine melanin types and their relative concentrations. It has the potential to assess the efficacy of the skin-whitening and pigmentation treatments objectively in a non-invasive manner.

T. subterraneum plants were treated with ozone enriched air (70 ppb) for either 1 h for a single day or 6 h for three consecutive days. After the first ozone exposure, plants were separated into six night-time light regimes during the two subsequent nights (10 h day, 14 h night): (1) darkness, (2) far-red light (FR), (3) a short night-break of red followed by far-red light during an otherwise dark night (R FR), (4) a short night-break of red, far-red and finally red light during an otherwise dark night (R FR R), (5) dim white light (L) and (6) red light (R). The treatments L and R resulted in significantly more severe ozone-induced visible foliar injuries relative to D and FR treatments, indicating a phytochrome-mediated response. The night-breaks resulted in a photoreversible and significantly different ozone response depending on the light quality of the last light interval (R FR or R FR R), supporting a photoreversible (between Pr and Pfr) phytochrome signalling response. Thus, in T. subterraneum, the outcome of oxidative stress due to ozone appears to depend on the photoperiod mediated by the night-time conformation of phytochrome.

I feel that in our present day multiracial society this statement requires advice in much greater depth. Am I to take It that readings are only valid for people of Caucasoid origin? How dark is dark? Fatigue resistance of cylindrical springs of 60S2A steel

[Show full abstract] experimental data were used to optimize the heat treatment conditions of the steel in producing cylindrical springs. Tests of Specimens. Blanks of 60S2A steel with the length L = 200 mm were quenched at different temperatures and then used to produce cylindrical specimens (Table 1). A V-shaped annular notch 2 mm deep (specimen 15 mm in diameter) and 1.5 mm deep (specimen 11 mm in diameter) with an opening angle of ~ = 60 ~ and a curvature radius of p _< 0. I mm was ground in the center of the specimen. Tests of specimens in rotating bending were carried out by the standard method [1] with a fixed deflection. The number of cycles N to complete fracture of the specimen was determined in the experiments. The crack initiation period N 1 was determined from the start of reduction from the stiffness of the specimen. The results of the tests obtained in the constant loading conditions of the specimens of each batch after appropriate heat treatment (deflection f = 3.5 mm in the 15 mm diameter specimens and f = 3.0 mm in the 11 mm diameter specimens) indicate that the heat treatment conditions have the strongest effect on the period of fatigue crack growth (Table 1). For example, for the specimens after low-temperature tempering the crack initiation period N l is longer than the crack propagation period N 2. In high-temperature tempering the initiation period shortens but the crack propagation period extends and the fatigue strength of the steel decreases at the same time. Since tempering at 450~ ensures the maximum cyclic endurance of the steel, these conditions were used in heat treatment of cylindrical springs. The results of the fatigue tests were also confirmed by the data obtained in dynamic impact bend testing [2] of notched cylindrical specimens in an MK-75 pendulum tester. Tests of Cylindrical Springs. Cylindrical steel springs were wound in the hot state by a mechanical method from 12 mm diameter (D = 80 mm; L = 377 mrn) and 10 mm diameter (D = 120 mm; L = 372 mm) bars. The tests were carried out on smooth and notched springs after quenching and tempering at 200 and 450~ A U-shaped notch was produced with a cutting wheel in the third turn in the bottom part at an angle of e~ = 45 ~ to the axis of the turn 4 mm wide and 3 mm deep with a bottom curvature radius of p - 2 mm. The experiments were carried out in a multiposition system. The results show that the endurance of both smooth and notched springs after treatment under two different sets of conditions differs (Table 2). The endurance was lower in the notched springs 16 and 12 mm in diameter after tempering at 200~ and higher in springs tempered at 400~ The dependence of the endurance for the smooth springs was similar. The fracture of a turn of a spring tempered at 200~ was light gray, typical of brittle fracture, and that of a turn tempered at 450~ was of a dark gray color typical of quasibrittle fracture. The fracture resistance of 60S2A spring steel is especially low in the presence of sharp stress raisers in fine-grained acicular martensitic structure (quenching and tempering at 200~ Tempering at 450~ produces a stochastic troostite structure capable of increasing the endurance of the springs by approximately 50-60%.
