NATO-Russia relations deteriorate

Moscow's political support for Abkhazia has made relations between NATO and Russia tense. Abkhazia is one of two breakaway territories inside Georgia. NATO and Russia have discussed security situation during a 30 April, 2008, meeting of the NATO-Russia Council. Relations of Russia with Abkhazia have hiked tensions in the region and undermined Georgia's integrity. NATO is also supporting Georgia's territory integrity, and avoids to support any steps that directly or indirectly undermine it. The Russian government has declared its intention to strengthen ties with Abkhazia, and announced plans to send more peacekeeping troops to the two regions.

Moscow's manipulations and deportations strengthen the government of Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili. And his aggressive rhetoric and risky policy makes the re-establishment of Georgia's territorial integrity more unlikely. With a policy of escalation both regimes are taking a bearish turn.

Russia suspends majority of military cooperation with NATO

Ivan Slotanovsky, Russia's deputy ambassador to NATO, has announced the suspension of military and political co-operation with NATO. NATO's summit in Bucharest allowed the alliance to transit non-military overland shipments across Russian territory. Slotanovsky said that NATO has lack of understanding about the aggressor and the victim, and informed allied officials about the suspension of their military and political relations. The suspension also include joint exercises, port calls by NATO ships to Russian ports, Russia's Status of Forces Agreement with NATO, and Moscow's participation in the NATO-Russia council.
