Abstract

Qualitative and quantitative analyses of two types of unidirectional carbon-carbon composites together with fractographic investigation and room temperature bending strength measurements were performed. Methodical aspects of the quantitative estimation of microstructure parameters were discussed. The reliability of the performed image analysis was judged. The effect of thermal treatment at 2200 °C (graphitization) on micro-structure and mechanical properties of the composites was pursued. The positive influence of using the high modulus fibres and of the performed heat treatment on bending strength and toughness of the investigated materials was confirmed.
