Abstract

Eye ball detection can be used for controlling certain applications. In this chapter, we describe the formulation of an eye ball detection system for design of an obstacle detection and avoidance technique. The obstacle detector is used with a vehicle and works by determining the location of an obstacle in the vicinity of a test object. The obstacle's distance is gauged from the test object in terms of corresponding voltages. The system uses image processing to detect the eye of the driver. If the eye of the driver is closed for a longer period than the threshold period then the image processing block sends a signal to the sensor which automatically takes control of the test vehicle.

With the increase in vehicle production and world population, more and more parking spaces and facilities are required. In this paper a new parking system called Smart Parking System (SPS) is proposed to assist drivers to find vacant spaces in a car park in a shorter time. The new system uses ultrasonic (ultrasound) sensors to detect either car park occupancy or improper parking actions. Different detection technologies are reviewed and compared to determine the best technology for developing SPS. Features of SPS include vacant parking space detection, detection of improper parking, display of available parking spaces, and directional indicators toward vacant parking spaces, payment facilities and different types of parking spaces (vacant, occupied, reserved and handicapped) through the use of specific LEDs. This paper also describes the use of an SPS system from the entrance into a parking lot until the finding of a vacant parking space. The system is designed for a four-level parking lot with 100 parking spaces and five aisles on each floor. The system architecture defines the essential design features such as location of sensors, required number of sensors and LEDs for each level, and indoor and outdoor display boards.

Currently, there are global efforts being made for energy saving. Lot of efforts are being done exploring the generation of alternative resources of energy - also called renewable energies which includes solar, nuclear, water and wind, to name but a few. Besides investigations of renewable energies, a global attempt is also being made to save energy consumption and reduce carbon emissions. A need to have a comprehensive Energy Management System could not have been felt more by both businesses and individuals. This Chapter describes features required for a complete system of energy management focusing on Electrical Energy. The system is designed making use of wireless sensor network & standard protocols. Chapter will address firstly the theoretical aspects of energy management followed by the detailed model for Automatic Meter Reading concept. We will focus on the features of such an Energy Management System & limits our scope to the detailing of Automatic Meter Reading concept and design.

In order to deal with the parking guidance issue of the parking guidance and information system in the parking lots, the behavior of choosing parking space was analyzed to build the optimal parking space choice model in the parking lots. Based on the specific situation of the parking lots, the habits and preferences of the drivers when parking their cars were all taken into consideration in this model. After summarizing the key factors which may influence drivers' parking space choice, a multiple attribute decision parking model is proposed to help PGIS in the parking lots choose the optimal parking space for drivers. A case is presented to verify the proposed model. The results show that the model can choose the optimal parking space and provide effective guidance for drivers. It can also take the drivers less time to find the parking space and it will take great help to the intelligent management for the parking guidance and information system, too.

An intelligent transportation system aims to make roads safer and less congested. Compared to traditional sensor networks, this recently emerged sensor network is not restricted by the power supply and the storage space. These sensors are equipped with GPS devices and large amount flash memory cards. Under such environment, an effective and efficient architecture for data collection and data exchange is more important. This paper is concerned with such an system framework consisting of static road side sensors and mobile vehicular sensors. Road side sensors are distributed according to the road segmentation for collecting data from mobile vehicular sensors passing by. While mobile sensors on vehicles monitor the road condition and send this information to road side sensors and to mobile neighbors when they are close enough. This paper presents a detailed data collection, storage and exchange mechanism for vehicular sensor networks and addresses the congestion problem raised by multiple mobile sensor users when accessing to a single road side sensor at the same time. The simulation results show our system can reduce 42% traffic jams and save the drivers for up to 36.6% total time.
