Abstract

Verso Paper Corp. has partnered with the National Geographic Society (NGS) to measure and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Based on Verso's experience with the Bucksport LCA, NGS hired independent consulting firm Harmony Environmental to help identify GHG emissions associated with National Geographic magazine and to guide the overall carbon footprint effort. Energized by the opportunity to partner with NGS on a comprehensive LCA involving all the major participants in the magazine's supply chain, Verso brought in resources from its manufacturing, sustainability and product development organizations to share their expertize and expand their LCA methodology. The Verso team worked with internationally recognized life cycle inventory consultants Franklin Associates Ltd. (FAL) and Harmony Environmental to develop, analyze, and report all paper-related research data. Over the last couple of years, the World Resources Institute has been working to address this issue, developing the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Product Life Cycle Accounting and Reporting Standard.
