Effect of the herbicide "roundup" in concentration 0.01-0.80 mg/dm 3 on viability of the carp eggs (Cyprinus carpio L.) has been studied. Probiotic preparations BPS-44 was shown to mitigate toxic effect of the herbicide and positively influence fish development.

Spawning and culture of shortnose sturgeon Acipenser brevirostrum

In 1983 and 1984, the endangered shortnose sturgeon, Acipenser brevirostrum, was successfully spawned and progeny reared as part of a cooperative culture program between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the State of South Carolina. [Show full abstract] through manual stripping. In one case, an uninjected female spawned in a tank with ripe males. Hatching began at 111–121 hours at 20°C and 136 hours at 18°C. Fish hatched at a mean size of 9.6 mm TL and grew to 28.9 mm by day 35. Tank-held spawned brood stock and wild-caught non-brood stock decreased in size in spite of the availability of natural foods, however, pond-held adults grew in size.

It is thought that grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) eggs must remain suspended in the water column in order to hatch successfully. Using sand, the effects of varying sediment levels on grass carp eggs were tested at different developmental states and temperatures. Survival was lower in the partial burial (5–10%) and very low (0–4%) in the full burial treatment. In all treatments, delayed hatching (organisms remaining in membranes past the stage of hatching competence) was noted. Deformities such as missing heads and pericardial edema occurred at high rates in the partial and full burials. Eggs that come in contact with the benthos and are resuspended in the water column should be considered in embryonic drift models.

Breeding biology was elucidated in terms of ova diameter, gonadosomatic index (GSI %) and fecundity of Notopterus notopterus from Keenjhar Lake, district Thatta, Sindh, Pakistan during May to September 2014. It was observed that the size of ova starts increasing from 1.0-2.82 mm during the study period and found highest (2.82) in July. The GSI % values were also found to increase from 0.1 to 1.83 ... [Show full abstract] and 3.72 to 7.92 for male and female, respectively. The estimation of fecundity in the present course of investigation was based on 12 graved fish. The fecundity of N. notopterus was ranged from 105-1500 eggs. The highest (1500 eggs) was recorded from the fish of 30.5 cm and 313.8 g and lowest (105 eggs) was recorded from the fish of 18.5 cm and 66.5 g in length and weight, respectively. It was concluded that the experimental fish N. notopterous was found to be low fecund fish as compare to carps due to bigger size of eggs and single lobed ovary. Fecundity was plotted against different body parameters like total length, body weight and gonad weight and found that it bears strong relationship with the total length.

Propagation of common carp (Cyprinus Carpio) at a large-scale hatchery in Hungary

Long-term data on the induced spawning of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) at a large-scale hatchery were evaluated. Breeders at the farm prefer medium-sized fish with body weights between 4 and 8 kg. The number of females selected for propagation in the first period of the spawning season made up about half of the total number of females (47.5%). The average spawning ratio from the data of 2620 ... [Show full abstract] females receiving hormonal injections was 79.8%. From the data of egg production of 2086 females, the average pseudogonadosomatic index (PGSI) has been calculated as 16.3 ± 5.87% (mean ± SD) for the same period. The time of induction has a significant effect on both female responsiveness and the relative quantity of eggs released. The spawning ratio was significantly lower in the third period of the reproductive season, compared to those in the first and second periods. The mean pgsi for the third period was significantly lower than that for the first. The considerable decrease in both reproductive parameters by the end of the spawning season is attributed to ovarian atresia. The spawning ratio and the mean PGSI for the mirror and scaled varieties were similar.

In order to induce artificially the spawning of the mud loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus), the mature females were injected with Gonatropin, Serotropin, Ovahormon, Synahorin and Prehormon. The study aims at using of diluted low fat milk with concentrations (1: 4, 1: 6, 1: 8 water: milk) (volume: volume), with 50 g eggs, for four replicates for each treatment of the experiment treatments to remove the adhesive substance from egg's surface of carp fish (Cyprinus carpio L.) to increase the percentage of fertilization and hatching. [Show full abstract] show that the treatment (T3), with concentration of (1: 6 water: milk) records significant differences at the level of (P> 0.01) for the percentage of fertilization which amounts (77%) on the control treatment and other treatments. It shows superiority with significant differences to the two traits: the average period of removing adhesive substance from the eggs per (min) and the average percentage of hatching which amounts (65.75 min, 81.5%), respectively. As well as shortens incubation period for the eggs (the time required for hatching eggs), which has been observed during the period of monitoring the eggs incubation. Thus, treatment (T3) shows its superiority on the control treatment and other used treatments in the experiment to remove the adhesive substance from common carp fish eggs during the artificial reproduction process in the hatcheries.

During June and July 1970, an estimated 5.3 million eggs (4.1/103m3) and 56.6 million young fish (43.8/103m3), 3–62 mm FL, were pumped by the Muddy Run Pumped Storage Generating Station from Conowingo Reservoir (lower Susquehanna River, Pennsylvania) into Muddy Run Pumped Storage Reservoir. Of the young, 73% entrained during pumping and 83% entrained during generating were Ictalurus punctatus, Cyprinus carpio, and Carpiodes cyprinus. Similar results are reported for 1969. The species and numbers of specimens entrained reflect the utilization of the area near and above the lower reservoir intake discharge structure as spawning and nursery grounds, the extent and peaks of spawning seasons, and the phases of development and behavior of the young. Sufficient numbers of specimens pumped into and retained by the upper reservoir, in which natural reproduction is nearly precluded by the extensive fluctuation of water level, survive to maintain many of the reservoir’s fish populations.

We used BioPlus® 2B probiotics (a mixture of Bacillus licheniformis (DSM 5749) and Bacillus subtilis (DSM 5750). The stocking density was of 80 fish/unit, with a total initial biomass of 29 kg/unit. The feeding intensity 2%/day from BW for every experimental variant. The technological indicators that resulted at the end of the experiment revealed that the biomass gain in V1 (without probiotics) was of 10.17 kg/m 3 , while in the other three variants containing probiotics, it was higher, respectively of 10.69 kg/m 3 (V2), 12.54 kg/m 3 (V3) and 10.
