Contamination of apple orchard soils and fruit trees with copper-based fungicides: sampling aspects

Accumulations of copper in orchard soils and fruit trees due to the application of Cu-based fungicides have become research hotspots. The study was conducted in three apple orchards from different sites. Each orchard included two different histories of Cu-based fungicides usage, varying from 3 to 28 years. Soil samples were collected from different locations varying with the distances from tree trunk to the canopy drip line. Fruits and leaves from the middle heights of tree canopy at two locations (outer canopy and inner canopy) were collected. The variation in total soil Cu concentrations between orchards was much greater than the variation within orchards. Total soil Cu concentrations had a tendency to increase with the increasing history of Cu-based fungicides usage. Moreover, total soil Cu concentrations had the lowest values at the canopy drip line, while the highest values were found at the half distances between the trunk and the canopy drip line. Additionally, Cu concentrations of leaves and fruits from the outer parts of the canopy were significantly higher than from the inner parts. Depending on the findings of this study, not only the between-orchard variation but also the within-orchard variation should be taken into consideration when conducting future soil and tree samplings in apple orchards.

In this study, through presenting the existing status of the fruit production potential of the Hakkari province, we aimed to increase the awareness and set light to decision makers in future plans for making use of the existing fruit potential of our country. ÖZET: Hakkari, Türkiye'nin Doğu Anadolu Bölgesi'ndeki illerinden biridir. Bu ilde, bir çok meyve türü yetiştirilebilir ve armut, ceviz, elma, erik ve kayısı'nın üretimi daha fazla göze çarpmaktadır. 2016 istatistiklerine göre Hakkari'de toplam meyve üretimi 19.555 ton olarak gerçekleşmiştir. Aynı yılda Hakkari ilçelerinin toplam meyve üretimleri göz önüne alındığında, Merkez, Yüksekova ve Şemdinli sırasıyla 7.883, 6504.2 ve 4.953 ton meyve üretimi ile birinci, ikinci ve üçüncü sırada yer alırken Çukurca 1.242 ton ile son sırada yer almaktadır. Yine aynı yıl Hakkari'de meyve türleri gözönünde bulundurulduğunda 7.093 ton elma, 6.979 ton ceviz, 1.949 ton erik ve 1.482 ton armut üretilmiştir. Bu çalışmada, Hakkari ilinin meyve üretim potansiyelinin mevcut durumunu ortaya koyarak, ülkemizin mevcut meyve potansiyelinden faydalanmak için gelecek planlarda karar vericilerin bilinç düzeyini arttırmayı ve ışık tutmayı amaçladık.

Learning a language is one of the most rewarding things that can be done at a time and remains forever. There are a lot of ways to learn or improve skills in a particular language, from attending classes through traditional methods ... [Show full abstract] such as reading and practice. But recently smartphones really do a lot for learning languages. With the smartphones a new market of mini-software called apps (short for applications) is growing at an incredible speed. The app stores iTunes app store and the Android Market (now Google Play) opened in 2008 and now only a few years later Google Play offers over 2.6 million. Amongst this incredible number of apps, there is a great variety of apps intended for students of foreign languages (or L2). The areas of language, the apps are designed to teach can range from teaching only vocabulary or pronunciation up to being well constructed language courses (DocPlayer, n.d.). Whether starting from scratch or just wanting to improve your English, the apps features of smartphones take advantage of the interactivity in order to provide gamified learning environments that will definitely be more interesting than what one can find in language classes. Thus, ubiquitous access to mobile phones makes language learning to straddle beyond the classroom, in virtual spaces and out in the world. This paper further throws light on how learner-technology interaction supports language development, particularly how apps can be viewed as opportunities for learners to extend or practice their communication. Lastly, I identify the apps I consider to offer the best language learning courses in terms of “best practice”. I conclude that the courses for language learning as applications try to make language learning easy, easily accessible and fun. They offer various approaches and methodologies to language learning with study material that emphasize different aspects of language learning either linguistic or for communicative purposes (DocPlayer, n.d.). In this study, we propose a new framework applying a dynamic state variable model to a multiple-generation product line with a single evolving technology. The evolution of the technology is formulated with the Fisher-Pry model and taken into account within the dynamic state variable model. An illustrative case study implementing the proposed framework on Apple iPhone multiple-generation product line is provided to see how technology evolution would impact the product introduction timing decisions.

The effect of nitrogen supply on specific yield and fruit quality of apple (Malus domestica Borkh.)

The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of nitrogen supply on yield and fruit quality of apple cultivars and to explore the relationships between canopy density and the different fruit quality parameters. The experiments were carried out at Kálmánháza, in Eastern Hungary in a private orchard in 2003-2004. The response of four apple cultivars ('Elstar', 'Gala Prince', 'Granny ... [Show full abstract] Smith', 'Idared') to different nitrogen dosages was studied. The assessed and calculated indices were: yield, fruit diameter, fruit height, shape index, fruit mass, firmness, dry matter content and colouration. The results indicated that nitrogen fertilization has a significant effect on the yield and fruit quality of apple cultivars. The calculated specific yield values were reduced by the application of nitrogen via the increase in the volume of the canopy. An opposit trend was observed for fruit diameter, fruit height and fruit weight, which increased with increasing nitrogen supply. The reduced shape index caused flattening of fruits. However, the improvement of fruit quality via increasing nitrogen dosage is only virtual, since these dosages increase the fruit size, but firmness, dry matter content and colouration are diminished, which decreases the value of the fruits on the market. The authors also studied the relationships between canopy density responsible for assimilation and light supply of the fruits and the different fruit quality parameters. The closest linear inversely proportional relationship was found in the case of colouration. There was a negative linear relationship between canopy density and firmness or dry matter content. The relationship between canopy density and fruit mass could be described by a quadratic polinomial function.

A trial on 15-year old apple tree was conducted during 2007-08 in a private orchard to see the effect of different levels of nitrogen on tree growth, fruit yield and quality of 'Starking Delicious' apple. It was found that different levels of nitrogen had significant effect on tree growth (23.0 and 23.5 cm) and fruit yield. The maximum yield 30 kg/tree and 65 kg/tree was observed with 700 g ... [Show full abstract] N/tree, followed by 600 and 800 g N/tree during both the years. Similarly, the fruit quality was also significantly affected by the different levels of nitrogen. The fruit acidity decreased with the increase in nitrogen levels, whereas fruit firmness did not show any consistent trend, whereas, the fruit weight increases with the increase in nitrogen levels.
