Localities are documented for the milliped Abacion texense (Loomis, 1837) (Callipodida: Abacionidae) whose distribution forms both the northern and southern ordinal limits in the Western Hemisphere. The westernmost component of Abacion Rafinesque, 1820, A. texense is the only milliped species whose range spans the Mississippi and Pecos rivers and the Rio Grande. Distribution extremes are in ... [Show full abstract] Hennepin County (Co.), Minnesota, in the north; Terrell and Potter cos., Texas, in the west; Alcorn Co., Mississippi, in the east; and southwestern Tamaulipas, Mexico, in the south. Occurrences are projected for southeastern South Dakota, northwestern Alabama, and the southwestern periphery of Tennessee. The type series of A. texense consists solely of the male holotype, so a neotype will be needed if this individual is ever lost, because no paratypes were officially designated.

Beach Erosion along the Northeast Texas Coast

Some areas of the Texas coast along the Gulf of Mexico are stabilized by beach nourishment or artificial protections, but the northeast Texas coast has been damaged and changed by short- and long-period erosion. The berm or dune that can act as protection from wave activities rarely exists, and mild, sloping beaches increase the potential of erosion in the study area. The upper Texas coast was ... [Show full abstract] monitored by Texas A&M University between 1999 and 2005. The measured beach profiles showed the morphological short- and long-period changes by overwash, and critical erosion was observed, especially by the landfall of hurricane Rita in 2005. The suspected causes of severe erosion were analyzed by comparing dune heights and beach widths, and it was found that overwash was one of the major factors causing erosion of the shoreline in the area. When storms made landfall in neighboring regions, such as southern Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, overwash by long-period waves of remote storms was observed during the beach surveys. Overwash by remote storms could not be ignored, and it was an important contributor to continued beach erosion in the study area. Erosion caused by direct landfall of storms had significant effects on long-period erosion as well.

Partial migration provides a mechanism for species to shift their geographic ranges into new, environmentally favorable regions but has been poorly studied as a means to alleviate effects of climate change. Populations at the edge of their geographic range are ideal to investigate how migratory behaviors may enable range expansion as adjacent areas become more climatically favorable. We ... [Show full abstract] determined the contribution of partial migration to the range expansion of West Indian manatees (Trichechus manatus) using GPS data from tagged individuals that migrated between the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGoM) and primary habitat in peninsular Florida. Most of these manatees migrated to the nGoM annually and exhibited high site fidelity among years. Many individuals spent cumulatively more time in the nGoM than in peninsular Florida, indicating the nGoM is a regular part of their geographic range, and they returned to peninsular Florida to meet temperature-related physiological needs for survival. Autumn migrations most frequently terminated at Crystal River, Florida, and manatees that commenced migration late in the season stopped less frequently and had more directed movements. Spring migrations most frequently terminated at Mobile Bay, Alabama, and several manatees quickly and directly migrated from Florida to nGoM stopover sites. Migrations ranged from 10 to 133 days in length, and variation in duration was primarily driven by use of stopover sites and directedness of travel. These data confirm partial migration as an important component of manatee migratory behavior that has already enabled range shifts for manatees on the U.S.A. Gulf of Mexico coast and has potential to facilitate future responses to climate change. As the most common type of migration across the animal kingdom, partial migration may provide a global mechanism for a diverse variety of species to resist the range limiting effects of climate change.

The changes in the metal concentrations in sediments from the eastern Gulf of Mexico OCS can be explained by the presence of a new source for these metals. These metals were released from the damaged Macondo Well which resulted in the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill during the spring of 2010. One-hundred and twenty sediment samples were collected during the fall months for the years 2008-2012 from ... [Show full abstract] the eastern OCS. The Tukey range test was used to compare measurement six metal concentrations between the relict sand deposits of the northern Gulf of Mexico OCS to the relict carbonate sediments off of western Florida OCS. Tests indicated that nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb) were significantly higher (p<0.05) in the seasonal average concentrations in the relict sand deposits after the spill. These higher concentrations are also reflected in the V to Ni ratio being at its lowest value in the relict sand (0.82) in the north, which is closer to the damaged well.

We analyzed Secchi depths (Zs), scalar downwelling irradiance, and transmissometer data collected during 10 cruises that spanned two and one-half years (May 1992-Nov. 1994) over the Louisiana-Texas shelf. The Zs increases from the inner shelf (depths ≤ SO m) to the outer shelf and from nonsummer (Zs = 10 m) to summer (Zs = 14 m). These changes in Zs are induced by the shelf's circulation and ... [Show full abstract] freshwater input, both of which vary seasonally, i.e., nonsummer to summer. Optical parameters (e.g., Zs), like the circulation, divide the shelf into an inner and outer shelf along the 50-m isobath. The inner shelf contains turbid waters with low levels of light penetration and large attenuation coefficients that decrease from nonsummer to summer. The outer shelf contains clearer water with high levels of light penetration and small attenuation coefficients year round. Linear regressions between the attenuation coefficients and Zs conform to theory and vary seasonally. The scalar downwelling attenuation coefficient and Zs are inversely related with coefficients of 1.36 in summer and 1.22 in nonsummer. The beam attenuation coefficient and Zs are also inversely related with coefficients of 6.16 in summer and 5.54 in nonsummer. © 2008 by the Marine Environmental Sciences Consortium of Alabama.

In the U.S. Gulf of Mex-ico (GOM), red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) are managed as a unit stock, although the stock is assessed as subunits east and west of the Mississippi River. Differences were examined between management subunits by comparison of the size and age structure and growth rates of red snapper among recreational catches from 6 regions of the GOM: South Texas, North Texas, ... [Show full abstract] Louisiana, Alabama, Northwest Florida, and Central Florida. In all of these regions , red snapper sampled in 2009 and 2010 were small and predominantly from age classes that represented the strong recruitment for the year classes of 2004–06. As such, our data indicate a highly truncated age structure with few fish older than 6 years. Demographic differences in size, age, and growth parameters were found. Small (≤550 mm in total length), fast-growing individuals dominated the catches in South Texas and the regions of Florida, whereas larger, slower-growing fish represented the majority of catches in Alabama and Louisiana. The potential mechanisms affecting observed demographic variation include environmental differences, fishing pressure, habitat preference, and management regimes; however, no definitive conclusion about cause and effect can be made. The combination of demographic differences between regions and consistent occurrence of the strong year classes GOM-wide supports recent conclusions that red snapper form a meta-population of semi-isolated assemblages in the GOM.

Age-1 Red Snapper Lutjanus Campechanus Exclude Age-0 Red Snapper From High-Quality Recruitment Habit...

Current evidence suggests that juvenile mortality rates of red snapper Lutjanus campechanus are density dependent, with year-class mortality varying inversely with year-class strength in both age-0 and age-1 fish. Such compensatory effects often arise in early post-settlement reef fishes as a result of high levels of predation when refuge space is limiting. Here we present results of an ... [Show full abstract] observational study which suggests that (1) high-quality settlement habitat is a limiting resource for early post-settlement age-0 red snapper, and (2) age-1 red snapper displace age-0 red snapper from high-quality refuge habitat. Visual surveys of fish communities on small artificial reefs off the coast of Alabama during the red snapper recruitment season (August 2012) demonstrated that abundance of age-0 red snapper was 6.7 times greater (95% C.I. from 3.0 to 15.2) on recently deployed reefs lacking potential competitors, compared to one-year-old reefs with high densities of potential intra- and interspecific refuge competitors (p < 0.0001). After accounting for this reef-age effect, the abundance of age-0 snapper was negatively correlated with the abundance of age-1 snapper (p = 0.036). Reductions in age-0 snapper abundance of 29.8% (95% C.I. from 2.4 to 49.6%) were associated with every doubling in the abundance of age-1 red snapper. This study suggests a potential mechanism by which early post-settlement mortality in red snapper may be a function of predation, habitat availability, and the density of the previous snapper year class. These results have important implications for constructing accurate fisheries models for this important Gulf of Mexico fishery species.
