Parental Authority and Psychological Well Being: An Adolescents’ Study

Abstract

The current study was aimed to examine the relationship between Parental Authority and psychological well being of adolescents. In order to assess this relationship Urdu version of Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) developed by Babree and Tariq (1998) and Urdu translation of The Ryff Scale of Psychological Well-Being (RSPWB) 54-item validated by Ansari (2010) were used to measure Parental Authority and psychological well being respectively among adolescents. Sample was consist of (N=330) individuals both men (n=165) and women (n=165) stuck between the age of 18 to 21 years, were approached in different academic institutes of Faisalabad. Statistical analysis of Bivariate Correlation was used to find out the relationship between parenting styles and psychological well being of adolescents. Results specify the existence of moderate positive relationship between the father's authoritative parenting style and psychological well-being (r = .066, p< .05) , and the medium positive significant relationship between the mother's authoritative parenting styles and psychological well-being (r = .049, p<.05). Implications of the study for future researches were also discussed.
