Abstract and Figures

Use of the sustainable material is a part of the sustainable development. The word was popularized in Our Common Future, a report published by World Commission on Environment and Development in 1987. Sustainable development is the development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In 1992 the principles of sustainable development were formulated at the United Nations Conference on Environment and development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Three bottom line concept of sustainability model given by John Elkington also explained to economic development, social equity and environmental protection. In this context green buildings are sustainable building are sustainable or green. The components of the green building include material efficiency, water efficiency, energy efficiency, indoor air quality efficiency, waste reduction, HVAC design and sustainable site planning. An attempt has been made in this paper to describe the characteristics of the green material as material efficient and the environmental philosophy behind each of this characteristic.

... The goals that are of concern to this study are goals 11, 12 and 13 because they are responsible for development of housing in both rural and urban centers as it also relates to climate change. As building construction materials are produced or manufactured it affect both human beings as well as the environment therefore the need for the manufacture of materials that are sustainable that will not cause negative impact to the environment in terms of carbon emission which can lead to global warming, all alternative building materials are sustainable because they are found within the environment and have a negligible amount of embodied energy [12] . [8] Sustainable construction needs the adoption of building materials that are environmentally friendly [13]. ...
... Sustainable material is part of sustainable development [12]. This means that Alternative Building Materials can play a very important role in the achievement of sustainable development because of the high level housing deficit in Nigeria which is due to the cost of conventional building materials. ...
... There two features for sustainable building materials these are: ecological features which include: recyclability, contamination, insulation and thermal [38]. While [12] explained that the acid test for considering building materials to be sustainable, the building materials should satisfy the following criteria: the material should be renewable and resource efficient; the material should support environmental health. In other words, it should provide healthier environment to public. ...

The construction industry influences and accelerates national growth and development, but it, however, contributes to unsustainable and eco-unfriendly development which impacts on the economy and environment. To encourage investment in sustainable construction, this study made a case for green building materials (GBM) products and services market in the construction industry of developing countries, through an assessment of the benefits of GBM incorporation in construction projects. The study adopted an internet-mediated questionnaire survey approach and snowball sampling techniques to gathered data from clients, consultants, professionals, and contractors/sub-contractor in the southeast geopolitical zones of Nigeria. Frequency, Percentile, Shapiro-Wilk test, Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) and Bartlett's tests, relative importance index (RII) and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to analyse the collected data. The study revealed that the green construction market is unsaturated and under-tapped. With high awareness and low adoption levels of GBM, it was concluded that the most important benefits of GBM that will trigger demand and supply of GBM products and services are improved daylight and reduced need for artificial lighting, improves the quality of life, Increase employees productivity and reduced absenteeism, improve occupants health and comfort, higher profit and return on investment, leads to construction professionals specialisation, reducing greenhouse gas emission from building, reduces toxicity in the internal environment, low operating and maintenance cost, and creates new job opportunities. The uniqueness of this study lies in the assessment of the views of construction stakeholders' in the five states that make up the Southeastern geo-political zone of Nigeria, regarding the key benefits that could trigger the uptake and incorporation of GBM in construction. Developers and Investors in the industry could invest in green construction since there is a ready and unsaturated market for it.

The rapid increase of residential buildings in Kuwait is a major contributor in resource consumption, waste generation and CO2 emissions. This paper aims to introduce a new concept of green buildings in Kuwait for saving water, energy and using eco-friendly materials in residential houses to develop more sustainable and high-performance buildings. For the purpose of evaluating the conventional buildings impacts and clarifying the resident’s awareness towards the green building concept, a survey questionnaire was designed using Google Forms. In addition, a case study of converting a conventional building into a green building was studied, with assurance that the owner requirements were implemented. The overall water saved (in terms of consumption and bill cost) was 46%. Energy waste from light consumption was reduced by approximately 86% by using LED lights, timers and sensors, with annual cost savings of 54%. Due to this reduction, a great decrease in CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions was achieved (approximately 65,893 kg per year). Moreover, two different design software tools (HAP and SketchUp) were applied for HVAC cooling loads and PV panels, respectively. By installing high-quality insulation and ducts and double-glass low-e windows, the HVAC cooling load was reduced by approximately 25%, which contributed to the decrease in greenhouse gas emissions (approximately 90,262 kg per year). The annual electricity production generated from the PV panel system was 6770 kW h. To enhance indoor air quality, an eco-friendly paint was used as an alternative to normal paint, resulting in an 88% reduction in VOCs.
