So far, ‘Industrial Culture’ as a term has been widely used as a synonym for industrial heritage. Only recently, a re-interpretation of industrial culture has been discussed, which goes beyond heritage issues by including contemporary or upcoming cultural and creative resources, addressing directly the future development opportunities of regions. Whilst some aspects of this conceptual framework of industrial culture are already applied in some places, there is no comprehensive outline available yet. In the academic field so far no coherent concept can be found. The aim of this thematic issue is to foster a discussion on the state-of-the-art regarding the conceptualisation of industrial culture. This thematic issue has gathered contributions that respond to the following questions: the different understandings of the concept of industrial culture; the role of industrial culture in the context of a post-industrial society and a knowledge-based economy; the connection between industrial culture, regional development and regional identity, as well as the inter-linkages between traditional industrial sectors and creative industries. The contributions in this issue focus strongly on the connection between the industrial past, present and future, bringing together different academic view points on the topic. The issue maps out current research topics and poses new questions on dealing with the wide topic of industrial culture.

A brief characterization of the cultural economy of landscape is provided, with special reference to the English Lake District. The early growth of tourism in the Lake District in relation to its natural, literary and artistic assets is described. I examine the cultural economy of landscape in relation to three critical social groups, namely, local producers of goods and services, residents and visitors/tourists. I then offer a detailed account of the main elements of the Lake District's cultural economy and the tourist experience today. Attention is devoted to (a) the natural environment and its attractions, (b) the historical-artistic patrimony of the region and (c) the growing importance of food production, cuisine and crafts within the regional economy. I show how these elements of the cultural economy combine with a complex institutional milieu to generate a path-dependent trajectory of development. In the conclusion, I present a few remarks on the concept of creative regions and the senses in which peripheral areas like the Lake District might and might not be analysed in terms of this concept.

The rapidly developing relationship between tourism and creativity, arguably heralds a ‘creative turn’ in tourism studies. Creativity has been employed to transform traditional cultural tourism, shifting from tangible heritage towards more intangible culture and greater involvement with the everyday life of the destination. The emergence of ‘creative tourism’ reflects the growing integration between tourism and different placemaking strategies, including promotion of the creative industries, creative cities and the ‘creative class’. Creative tourism is also arguably an escape route from the serial reproduction of mass cultural tourism, offering more flexible and authentic experiences which can be co-created between host and tourist. However the gathering critique also highlights the potential dangers of creative hype and commodification of everyday life.

The European Cultural Capital Event has become a much sought after distinction for cities seeking to attract cultural visitors. The event has developed beyond its mainly cultural origins to form an important part of urban economic and cultural reconstruction strategies for deindustrialising cities in Europe.This article reviews the history and development of the event, and analyses the extent to which cultural events have been successful in stimulating economic development. Although there is abundant evidence of short-term increases in visitor numbers and spending, there is inconclusive evidence for longer-term benefits.

This article explores the tourism potential of industrial sites in general and more specifically of mining areas. Such tourism attractions could be included within the broader framework of heritage tourism. Limited attention has, however, been focused on them, unlike other better-known and developed forms of heritage tourism. The article examines the importance and perception of mines and quarries as foci for industrial heritage tourism and its expansion during the last decades. It discusses a typological framework of industrial heritage sites; and to offer a vision of the different consideration of this industrial heritage, the article concludes with case studies from Wales and Spain.RésuméMines et carrières: le tourisme du patrimoine industriel. Cet article analyse les possibilités touristiques des sites industriels en général et des zones d'exploitation minière en particulier. On pourrait inclure ce type d'attraction touristique dans le cadre plus large du tourisme patrimonial. On a prêté une attention limitée à ces sites, à la différence des formes mieux connues et mieux développées du tourisme patrimonial. L'article examine l'importance et la perception des mines et des carrières comme centres d'attention pour le tourisme patrimonial industriel et son développement durant les dernières décades. On discute un cadre typologique de sites de patrimoine industriel, et on conclut par des études de cas en Pays de Galles et en Espagne, permettant ainsi une vision alternative de ce patrimoine industriel.

Cities in the Experience Economy

This article addresses the opportunities of cities, big and small, in the experience economy. It proposes an understanding of “experience economy”, which encompasses not only entertainment and culture, but also services and places. To territorial development, the most interesting kind of experience consumption is the one co-located with its production. It is interesting because it invites people to stay and spend their money, either as residents or as tourists. Art and culture is known to cluster, and in big cities, the variety of the experience offer is an attraction in itself. Nevertheless, small cities embark on experience-based strategies, for example, related to events and branding. The article develops a theoretical framework that unfolds the territorial aspects of the experience economy. It does so in a comparative perspective, with a view to earlier (and coexisting paradigms), namely the industrial and the knowledge economy. Based on literature review it analyses the location patterns, the role of globalization, the changing governance forms and the mobility patterns, the latter being of utmost importance to the development of experience-based activities on the global market.

Sustainable Tourism Innovation: Challenging Basic Assumptions

Although much of the discussion of innovation focuses on new products and technologies, all innovation is based on challenging existing assumptions and ways of thinking. This paper argues that one option to develop new ways of thinking and innovation in tourism is to argue that there is no such thing as sustainable tourism. If we begin with the assumption that tourism cannot be sustainable in its own right but may contribute to the sustainable development of some regions under some circumstances, then a number of new approaches to tourism development emerge. In particular, it is argued that stronger links may emerge between tourism and other economic activities and development options. These potential synergies are described and illustrated with a range of examples. In addition, the paper sets out a series of additional criteria that could be used to evaluate different potential tourism developments and makes suggestions about the development of sustainability performance indicators. Finally, the paper highlights the importance of better knowledge management systems to support innovation in tourism.
