From a detailed study of an epigraphic list of theatre victors dated to the first half of the third century B. C., in which ‘ old’ dramas are recorded in contest, I formulate the hypothesis that a new contest of ‘ old’ dramas in Athens was instituted in the third century and more precisely at the date 279/ 8.
