Así, esta relación se concibe como una exaltación política y religiosa de la ciudad de Lima, propia del género festivo y de la literatura corográfica, que se conecta también con el naciente discurso criollo. Analysis of the festivities of the Immaculate Conception celebrated in Lima in 1656, from the account written by Diego de León Pinelo Gutiérrez. This Creole text reinterprets in baroque terms the cult of the Immaculate Conception in the City of Kings. Through it we can study these lengthy festivals, which involved the participation of the city’s most important institutions and corporate bodies, mobilizing considerable resources and people. Thus, the text is conceived as a political and religious exaltation of the city of Lima, typical of the festive genre and of the chorographic literature, which also connects with the emerging Creole discourse.

This article investigates how Christmas became a central holy day for Christianity and a special celebration for families of modern times. Schleiermacher's famous "Weihnachtsfeier" (1806) is discussed as a masterpiece of Christian self-interpretation on Christmas within the context of families and friends. Following Schleiermacher, the Incarnation is understood as the embodiment of self-interpretation. The essay concludes with some suggestions regarding celebrating Christmas as a family event.

Roghara Parve: A Festival or a Custom Related to Health and Pollution among Mundas

Like every tribe Mundas also celebrated a large number of festivals, but for the first time, a festival named Roghara was noticed by the researcher among Mundas during her fieldwork among Munda tribe in 2006. [Show full abstract] concept of pollution caused by evil spirits, which cause health problems on the villages affected by it. The chief point noted during observation is, that, this festival is celebrated by both Sarna (those Mundas who worship Nature) and Christian populations (converted to Christianity) together, which show that Roghara is more a custom in their culture than a religious festival. This research paper clearly shows, with the description of Roghara Parve that, how each and every festival has a certain objective behind it and they are essential for smooth functioning of our social life.

The culture of contemporary writers' festivals

This thesis examines the culture of contemporary writers’ festivals in an international context. In the last five decades writers’ festivals have emerged in cities across the world, and during this time they have expanded their literary discussions and debates to include numerous other topics of broad interest to society. To examine the expanded popularity and function of writers’ festivals, this ... [Show full abstract] thesis establishes a new vantage point for theorising the content now typically generated by these events using concepts in urban festivals and public culture research. Importantly, the new vantage point addresses the limitations of current commentary on writers’ festivals which routinely claim they trivialize literature, and more generally, contribute to the decline of public culture. The thesis presents two case studies: one on the Brisbane Writers Festival in Australia and the other on the International Festival of Authors in Toronto, Canada. The first case study, which focuses on the 2007 Brisbane Writers Festival, illustrates the many overlapping and often conflicting discourses as well as opinions productively discussed and debated at writers’ festivals. Key topic discussed and debated at the Festival include local topics about the host city—its history, literature and politics, as well as broader literary, political and celebrity culture topics. The diversity of topics discussed at the 2007 Brisbane Writers Festival is typical of the majority of writers’ festivals similarly located outside the largest geographic centres of global literary production and circulation, and designated as ‘peripheral’ festivals in this research. The second case study on Toronto’s International Festival of Authors examines the ways in which the 2006 Festival almost exclusively focussed on literary and celebrity culture discourses, and promoted itself on these terms. The 2006 International Festival of Authors’ discussion and debate of a narrow range of topics is typical of the few writers’ festivals located in global centres of literary production and circulation, and unlike ‘peripheral’ festivals they are not experiencing the same growth in number or popularity. The aim of these ‘international’ Festivals is not to democratise their elite literary beginnings, but rather to promote ‘literature’ as a niche brand for quality writing that is valid on a global scale. This thesis will assert that while all writers’ festivals are influenced by the marketing desires of publishing companies, the aim of international writers’ festivals in marketing to a virtually and globally connected elite literary audience makes them more susceptible to experiencing declines in audience and author participation.

Since the 1980's, architectural and art historians have been seduced by the opulence of the inaugural processions of bishops entering into Episcopal cities, by the architectural structures and their symbolic allegories which they have interpreted as a monolithic and ephemeral example of Baroque celebrations. The urban festivities studied were organized to celebrate the inauguration of bishops ... [Show full abstract] taking over their dioceses. However these extraordinary ceremonies were, in fact, a diverse mix of formulas, gestures, actions, and symbolic acts celebrated in many places intra et extra moenia civitatum. Our objective is to try to deepen the interpretation to date of this extraordinary rite, examining a peripheral region subject to the Spanish monarchy. The period studied is between the second half of the sixteenth century and first half of the eighteenth century, and the analysis compares heterogeneous inaugural ceremonies of newly appointed bishops of 5 Episcopal cities within the ecclesiastical system of the Salento Peninsula in the Kingdom of Naples.
