Abstract

Singapore is looking forward to deploy two small military teams to work with the New Zealand-led Provincial Reconstruction Team working since 2003 in Afganistan's central province of Bamiyan. A five-member medical unit will establish a dental clinic at Bamiyan Hospital and train local personnel to provide dental services on a long-term basis, while a five-member team of combat engineers will join New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) and Afgan contractors to undertake bridge construction and repair work. Both Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) teams will be deployed for a period of three months each and details are still being worked out with the various parties involved, including NATO and the Afgan government. Singapore is also prepared to work together with some 40 countries currently working in Afganistan to build the institutions, infrastructure, and services that will bring brighter prospects to the people of Afganistan.
