Abstract

The automation of customs clearance procedures in the U.S.A. with special reference to container ports, carriers and terminal authorities is discussed. The allocation of customs manpower between East and West coasts is examined and present documentation procedures are explained. The inspection of containers at devanning stations, and at importers premises is discussed for west coast ports where containerised imports from the Middle East are increasing. The introduction of the various computized packages for cargo clearance is described, while the red in-hand sealing directive, and the issue of user fees to obtain faster clearances are examined in economic and political terms.
