Case studies in digital textile printing

The emergence of digital textile printing has evolved from being a prototyping tool to a full print production solution. It offered opportunities for design freedom and creativity, has bred a new generation of designers, enable mass customization and personalization and still offer many possibilities in the future. Meanwhile, a design research company, Freedom of Creation (FOC) developed a rapid manufacturing technique for textile structures using laser sintering. The invention is so revolutionary that textiles can be applied to anything and uses any material including epoxy, plaster, starch, bronze, polyamide, alumide and steel. Among these materials, polyamide works best in tested applications.

[Show full abstract] carbon nanotubes are applied on a 50% poly(ethylene terephthalate) and 50% polyamide non-woven textile substrate by rotary-screen printing. The printed layers function as resistive heating elements in a fiber-reinforced composite. The heating areas are provided with flexographic or screen inline-printed silver-electrodes and can be integrated by means of vacuum infusion into a glass fiber-reinforced epoxy composite laminate. These laminates, which are connected to an intelligent electrical control system, are suitable for melting ice on the surface of components or for preventing the formation of ice. The first promising experiments on heating structures in a rotor blade of a wind turbine at laboratory scale (2 m length) are the basis of studies on intelligent electrical control of heating structures and their behavior at different temperatures. The heating elements were able to melt a 3–4 mm thick ice layer within 25 min in a climate chamber at −5 °C. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2017, 135, 45950.

The newer type of Epson print heads contain 8 x 180 nozzles, compared with the earlier print heads, and these new print heads require formulations that which can feed the ink at high speeds.

[Show full abstract] customized products. A single case study methodology has been adopted, based on a project part-funded by the UK Department of Trade and Industry. At the outset of the research, four technical problems were identified and three marketing challenges. The technical problems were concerned with color management, reduction in the use of black, the achievement of commercial standards of performance for printed textiles, and the standardization of processing conditions for textile substrates. The nature of the technical problems will be presented, together with the solutions that have been found. The market challenges were to enable three collaborating companies to operate in “virtual” mode, to identify suitable products, and to identify viable ways of getting access to consumers. Progress has been made in each of these areas, but the major issue concerns the interface with consumers. Manufacturers do not have an infrastructure giving access to markets, nor do they have the retailing expertise. At the same time, retail organizations have systems that involve holding stock items: physical products to sell. The mass customization concept is a paradigm shift for such organizations. At the same time, consumers easily confound mass customization with "made to measure". Nevertheless, the collaborating companies have found routes for digitally printed products via high street retailers and via internet sales. Spin-off companies have been formed and jobs have been created.

[Show full abstract] development of a methodology to assist designers in seeing possibilities, making informed decisions, and predicting colour transitions at di erent temperatures when designing a dynamic surface pattern. The research was conducted by undertaking a series of design experiments using leuco dye-based thermochromic inks, which resulted in various working methods and two pedagogical tools. This process o ered the insight and depth of understanding required to design dynamic surface patterns, in that it highlighted the di erent colour-changing properties of leuco dye-based thermochromic inks, which have the potential to create a more complex and dynamic range of patterns on textiles than those that exist today. There is much to explore beyond the current design possibilities o ered by thermochromic inks, and it is hoped that designers and researchers can apply the knowledge that has been obtained during the work of this thesis to their practical explorations so as to move towards new ways of thinking and designing, and further innovation in textile design.

[Show full abstract] beginning now to encompass related systems of material addition, subtraction, assembly, and insertion of components made by other processes. Furthermore, these various additive/subtractive processes are starting to evolve into rapid manufacturing techniques for mass-customized products, away from narrowly defined rapid prototyping. Taking this idea far enough down the line, and several years hence, a radical restructuring of manufacturing as we know it could take place. Not only would the time to market be slashed, manufacturing itself would move from a resource base to a knowledge base and from mass production of single use products to mass customized, high value, life cycle products. At the time of the panel's visit, the majority of SFF research and development in Europe was focused on advanced development of existing SFF technologies by improving processing performance, materials, modeling and simulation tools, and design tools to enable the transition from prototyping to manufacturing of end use parts. Specific examples include: laser sintering of powders, direct metal deposition and laser fusion of powders, and ink jet printing techniques. Truly integrated layer-by-layer additive/subtractive processes under development are limited; European emphasis was on creating an entire process chain to create new business models.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to synthesise some disperse dyes containing a reactive group and study their applications on polyamide and wool printing by heat transfer and screen printing. Design/methodology/approach To prepare these dyes, arylhydrazones of acetylacetone were reacted with cyanothioacetamide in boiling ethanolic sodium ethoxide. The resultant salt was collected by ... [Show full abstract] filtration and dried, then the salt was dissolved in ethanol and reacted with chloroacetylchloride with stirring for 3 h, where chloroacetylechloride was added dropwise. The final precipitated product was collected by filtration and crystallised with an appropriate solvent. These prepared dyes were used to print polyamide and wool fabrics by using synthetic thickener in the printing paste for all techniques. Findings The structure of the synthesised dyes were established and confirmed for the reaction products on the basis of their elemental analysis and spectral data (MS, IR and ¹ H‐NMR). The suitability of the prepared dyestuffs for either heat transfer printing or traditional printing on nylon 6 and wool fabrics was investigated. The prints obtained from dyes possess high‐colour strength as well as excellent overall fastness properties. Research limitations/implications The synthesised heterocyclic reactive disperse azo dyes were prepared from the reaction of arylhydrazones of acetylacetone and thiocyanoacetamide to form the corresponding pyridinethione salts which underwent further reaction with chloroacetylchloride. The obtained dyes were utilised in preparing a paste for polyamide and wool fabric printing. In addition, both of the variation of the substituents on the synthesised dyes and the fastness properties were also studied. Practical implications The synthesis and use of reactive disperse dyes provide practical solution to over come the low fastness on polyamide and wool, when they are printed with disperse dyes only. Originality/value The result of the work aimed to define the scope and limitation of the authors' procedures for the synthesis of novel reactive disperse azo dyes to improve the low‐fastness properties of polyamide and wool, the dyes were synthesised in a simple way.
