Relazione Geologica relativa all'area dell'istanza "VERGATO" (Northern Apennines, Italy)

Abstract

This Geological Report is one of the main attachments to the application for the "Vergato" Exploration Permit in the Northern Apennines (Italy), filed with the Ministry of Industry. The stratigraphy and the tectonic evolution of the area are described on the basis of published scientific papers and the results of previous exploration boreholes. The three principal sedimentary units of the area, namely the Mesozoic sedimentary sequence, the Tertiary sedimentary sequence and the Liguridi allochthonous Units are addressed and described. Three main regional detachment levels are recognised within the sedimentary sequence corresponding to (from the deepest to the shallowest) the Burano Formation, the Scaglia Cinerea and equivalent Formations and the Marne formation of Miocene (Tortonian) age. These slip surfaces limit independently formed duplex structures, which are deformed by the formation of further duplex structures at a deeper stratigraphic level, by collapse of the frontal ramp of the thrust belt at Mesozoic level. The Report therefore represents one of the first applications in the Northern Apennines of Italy of the so-called thin-skinned overthrust belt tectonics, Canadian style. The report contains a two-way-time structural map, based on an extensive set of reflection seismic profiles, of the Marne a Fucoidi Formation (Figure 7, by Carlo Bevilacqua), the best horizon of the Mesozoic sedimentary sequence, which shows lateral continuity of this reflecting horizon, across the surface tectonic feature traditionally named “Linea del Sillaro”. This map demonstrates that the so-called Sillaro Line is not a deep-rooted transform fault, and that it represents only the intersection of the base-Liguridi overthrust surface with the present day topographic surface. The report is made available to the public through the VIDEPI project, at link http://unmig.sviluppoeconomico.gov.it/videpi/cessati/relazione.asp?titolo=886&relazione=2280 The report large format figures (Figures 3, 4, 5 and 7) are available separately at the same page as reported above, while the report without such large format figures is available at the link http://unmig.sviluppoeconomico.gov.it/deposito/videpi/relazioni/2280.pdf
