Attendees of Cottech 2004, held August 17-18 in Research Triangle Park, N.C., were provided with the latest update on cotton textile technology. With presentations from industry leaders, the conference highlighted a wide range of performance finishes for cotton with emphasis on chemistry for colorfastness improvement, water repellency, apparel flammability, moisture management finishes, and soil/stain release. New innovations and cutting edge technology related to better dyeing techniques, color communication, ozone washing, imaging technology for durable press, shrinkage measurement, and the latest in digital printing technology for cotton were presented.

Quarantine treatments of raw cotton fiber with gamma irradiation are known to have an adverse effect on fiber properties and thus could have an effect on processing into textile products. While the affect on moisture regain was marginal, dye affinity was adversely affected. From a textile processing performance and quality point of view, the irradiation dosages did not have a significant impact on the yarn evenness and imperfection values, but did have a significant effect on yarn strength and elongation, as well as fabric strength and abrasion resistance. The degradation of these properties could have a significant to catastrophic effect on product durability.

Drying behaviour of different textile fibres

The drying times of polyester, cotton and wool fabrics were compared by immersing white samples in water containing a special dye indicator (thymolphthalein) which coloured the samples blue. As they dried, the fabrics gradually turned white again. The polyester sample dried the fastest. The color strength (K/S value) of dyed cationized cotton fabrics (K/S = 12) has been better than the non-cationized ones (K/S = 4). Experimental results show that the fastness properties of dyed cationized cotton fabrics range from average to good. We find that the cationization of cotton fabrics has largely improved the dyeability and fastness properties of cotton fabrics dyed with V. vinifera L. leaves aqueous extract.

A New Environmentally Friendly Method of Dyeing on Tencel/Cotton Blended Fabrics

Results indicated that lyocell/cotton blended fabrics containing 50% or more of cotton could be dyed in the bleaching bath. Proper stability and durability can reduce the problem of the roller sticky, floating oil. It is colorless and transparent thick liquid and easy to dilute. It has the excellent affinity to all kinds of fabrics including cotton knit fabrics, woven cotton fabrics, jute etc. The overall results come out with great prospect for silicone oil " Sample C " in textile finishing.

Union dyeing wool/cotton blends: Part II-A pretreatment for dyeing with vinyl sulfone dyes

[Show full abstract] modifying cotton in the presence of wool for subsequent one-step dyeing of this blend was compared to that of poly(diethylenetriaminebiguanide) sulfate, PDETAB, reported in Part 1. When PHMB- and PDETAB-pretreated fabrics were compared for color strengths, quality of union shades, color fastness properties, and microbial efficacy, PDETAB proved more versatile for maintaining high K/S and acceptable union shades. However, PHMB alone imparted antimicrobial efficacy. The colorfastness properties of the union dyed fabrics pretreated with either biguanide compound were essentially the same. A four-factorial design for varying biguanide concentration, pH, time, and temperature is proposed as a screening method to establish the lowest pretreatment conditions for a subsequent dyeing with a specific dye. By this design, there is indication that PDETAB can be applied effectively at 8% owf, pH 6.5, 20C for 15 minutes with no adverse affects on color strength, dyebath exhaustion, and the attainment of level and union shades in subsequent dyeings with three of the cotton-reactive dyes examined in this study.

[Show full abstract] is easy to dissolve in low-temperature water, but maintaining the pH at 5 even at room temperature and adding the electrolyte component at about 0.03 mol / L makes it possible to obtain the same degree of whiteness as that of conventional method. Bleaching with ozone fine-bubbles does not require heating the treated water. In addition, the amount of chemicals to be used can be greatly reduced. The use of ozone fine-bubble technique can be said to be an environmentally friendly treatment method.

Some of these same reactive additives also greatly enhance the receptivity of non-formaldehyde polycarboxylic acid cross-linked cottons for anionic dyes. In this study, the effect of reactive additives on formaldehyde release from cottons finished with formaldehyde-containing agents is discussed, as are the dyeing and colorfastness properties of these fabrics. Also examined are anionic dyeing and fastness properties of non-formaldehyde polycarboxylic acid cross-linked cellulosic fabrics.
