Mrs Treadwin's new headstone

Elizabeth Trebble describes how she along with her group was entrusted by the Devon Lace Teachers with a project involving replacement of the headstone of Charlotte Elizabeth Treadwin and re-erecting and cleaning that of her youngest sister Emily in April 2008. Donations began to arrive from individuals, groups and teachers who held raffles during their courses, to put with the money raised by the Devon Lace Teachers themselves. Local historians also became involved in the project which aimed at preserving the lace heritage of Devon Lace Teachers. Carol McFadzean, who had been fronting the project, was entrusted with the task of arranging for the two graves. The unveiling ceremony attracted 40 guests, including Sue Dane and Gwynedd Roberts, from the Guild, who arrived at Higher Cemetery for a brief service. The next part of the event was held at No. 5 Cathedral Close, Treadwin's lace manufactory.

Adjusting these settings immediately shows the impact on individual employees, departments, the current wage distribution histogram, and the projected wage distribution histogram. Adjusting the controls affects various charts on the dashboard. The charts include the combination chart, bar chart, histogram, and the normal distribution. The chapter compares the charts with the ones on the dashboard.

A high price to pay: new light on the extinction of the Pink-headed Duck Rhodonessa caryophyllacea

The Pink-headed Duck Rhodonessa caryophyllacea has always appeared to be mysterious and rather uncommon, and has not been reliably recorded since the 1940s; it is now almost certainly extinct. Comparatively few specimens were taken in the first two decades of the twentieth century. [Show full abstract] least 16 live birds were sent by him to his brother, Alfred, who owned a menagerie at Foxwarren Park, England. This increased collecting pressure on the remaining population may have been the ultimate reason for its extinction. I suggest that the last claimed observations of wild birds, between 1947 and 1949, are open to considerable doubt as no specimens were preserved. Although there was the offer of another substantial reward from 1930 onwards, this was never claimed and it is more likely that the last observation of the species in the wild occurred over a decade earlier, in 1935. This means that the last probable record of the species, that of a captive bird held in Calcutta, was in November 1948.

'Music, why do you weep?' A lament for Alexander Agricola (d.1506)

Alexander Agricola died in Spain in 1506 in the service of Philip the Fair, King of Castile. Somebody composed for him a short, four-voice lament, Musica, quid defles?, which has been preserved uniquely in a much later collection of motets, Georg Rhau's Symphoniae jucundae of 1538. This article explores the idea that the lament might have been composed by a Spanish composer such as Juan de ... [Show full abstract] Anchieta who had served alongside Agricola in the last year of his life. The musical structure and idiom suggest this possibility, and the text may also have been penned by a member of the Castilian court, whether the composer himself or a figure such as Diego Ramírez de Villaescusa, head chaplain to Juana ‘the Mad‘, who published a set of four dialogues on the death of Juana's brother Juan in 1497. This Latin epitaph in dialogue form would certainly not be out of place in the tradition established in the Spanish kingdoms for elegies and other funerary and commemorative pieces, in both Latin and the vernacular, written—and sung—for important figures in the late 15th century. A musical setting of such a piece in Latin by a Spanish composer would appear to have been more unusual at this period; possibly Anchieta, if indeed the piece was by him, was thus contributing a special homage to his colleague in the Burgundian chapel.

The article offers the first edition of a late antique private letter preserved on a papyrus from the Viennese collection. The writer lives in Alexandria, but maintains close relations to the Thebaid, especially to the Panopolite nome. His place of origin can perhaps be situated in that area. The recipient, whom the writer addresses as a "brother," probably lived in Hermupolis Magna, where ... [Show full abstract] allegedly the papyrus was found; however, at present he is on his way up the Nile to Psonis in the Panopolite nome. The letter begins with an enquiry about the recipient's health: the writer appears to be very concerned, a fact which implies a close emotional relationship with the recipienr. It then refers to an issue concerning the bad fortune or wrong behaviour of certain persons, who were close to the writer and the recipient: a servant named Chryseros, a patrician, who according to the writer behaved unjustly, since he exacted money from a procurator in the name of the writer, and, finally, a third person, who dissipated all his travel money during his stay in Alexandria, including spending on courtesans, and thus contributed heavily to the writer's dire financial situation. The writer is educated and uses many rare words and phrases. Apparently, both he and the recipient, though not scholars, belonged to the urban elite of Egypt.

The Flight from Maturity

Why did the failure of Lehman Brothers make the financial crisis dramatically worse? Our answer is that the financial crisis was a process of a build-up of risk during the crisis prior to the Lehman failure. During the crisis market participants tried to preserve an option to withdraw or exit by shortening maturities – the “flight from maturity”. We show that the flight from maturity was ... [Show full abstract] manifested in a steepening of the term structures of spreads in money markets. With increasingly short maturities, lenders created the possibility of fast exit. The failure of Lehman Brothers was the tipping point of this build-up of systemic fragility. We produce a chronology of the crisis which formalizes the dynamics of the crisis. We test for common breakpoints in panels, showing the date of the subprime shock and the dates of runs in the secured and unsecured money markets. A crisis is a dynamic process in which “tail risk” is endogenous.

Based on four letters dating from the period between December 1652 to January 1653, the article documents the vicissitudes of the portraits (and copies of them) of Joris Vezclaer and Margaretha Boghe. This couple, portrayed by Joos van Cleve in about 1518, were identified by Horst Gerson as the parents of Constantijn Huygens on his mother's side. Huygens, eager to obtain the original portraits or ... [Show full abstract] at least copies of them, makes enquiries from the art dealer Matthijs Musson in Antwerp and from the nephew (and niece) Buyex Alewyn, former guardians of the parental heritage in Deurne, but to his great surprise discovers copies which had been put on the market. Beatrix de Cusance, duchess of Lorraine, was so charmed by Huygens' enthusiasm for the ancestral portraits that she decided to buy them and present them to Constantijn. According to Buycx's letter of January 1653 the original portraits were sent to Vienna after the painter De Vos of Antwerp had made two sets of copies. Buycx, who owned one of these copies, consented to retrieve the original portraits from Vienna. This appeared to solve the problem of ancestral portraits, but no matter how grateful Huygens was to the Duchess of Lorraine, he was apparently not satisfied with mere copies. In a letter written fifteen years later (December 1667) it appears that Jacob Buycx had obtained further information about the location of the portraits, but had been unable to track them down after the sister of his wife, Helena Alewyn of Vienna, had received them. Buycx presumed an heir in Vienna, perhaps a Solicouffer, had them in his possession. From the Huygens collection of letters it appeared that there was another letter with information of the portrait panels. This letter, written in Dutch from Vienna (dated December 1, 1667) from an unknown writer to an unknown recipient indicates that a member of the Zollickhoffer family who had come down in the world may have sold the portraits. The letter also mentions the merchant Golddast of Vienna, who had been approached by someone in Holland to trace the "gentleman from Zuylichem" for a considerable amount of money. Unfortunately for Constantijn, however, the original portraits failed to return. One set of copies of the ancestors on both sides of the family remained until well into the eighteenth century - until 1786 - in the Huygens collection of family portraits, but to this day the whereabouts of neither of Margaretha Boghe's two copies have been traced.

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the importance of postsecondary education in the future plans of 16-21 year old youth from the United States. A secondary purpose of the study was to determine if selected individuals in their lives influence the post-secondary education decisions made by 16-21 year old youth in the United States. In addition, selected outcome options were ... [Show full abstract] analyzed to determine the effect these options have on post-secondary education decisions made by 16-21 year old youth from the United States. The sample for the study consisted of 3,017 males and females between the ages of 16-21, collected by means of a telephone survey. The dependent variable for this study was the higher education plans of 16-21 year old youth; and the independent variables were age, gender, ethnicity, usual grades made in high school, strength of influence of selected outcome options, and influencers of the decisions made by the respondents. The study found that 16-21 year old youth in the United States have a strong desire to attend post-secondary education full-time rather than part-time. A majority of the respondents indicated that they prefer attending a 4-year college or university with the second choice being a 2-year junior or community college. The respondents indicated that they are influenced strongly by their parents, siblings, and close friends to make decisions; but there does not appear to be a strong influence by this group on the respondents to make decisions about post-secondary education. The outcome options that appear to have the most influence on this age group are: having a job that makes you happy, having a good paying job, earning money for college, having an attractive lifestyle, preparing for a career, having job security, making a positive difference in the community and learning a valuable trade or skill. These factors, however, donÃ¢ÂÂt appear to have a strong influence on this group when making a decision to attend post-secondary education.
