Abstract

The Tertiary sediments were found in two areas on the bottom surface or under a thin layer of the Quaternary sediments. Combined investigations into radiolaria, diatoms and planktonic foraminifera have shown a continuous sequence of biostratigraphic zones from the Late Eocene to the Early Miocene and the regional hiatus between 17 and 1 m.y. The Early Miocene sediments were observed mainly in the western area and the Oligocene sediments in the eastern area. The Oligocene radiolaria were detected in the ferromanganese nodules. A hypothesis is proposed that seismic shocks cause sediments to vibrate on the water/bottom boundary. As a result of vibration effect the ancient nodules turn out on the bottom surface, often on the Quaternary sediments. The loosening and suspension of sediments by seismic shocks and their removal by bottom currents have also promoted the formation of the stratigraphic hiatus.
