A comment on the Shibata–Hashitsume Langevin equation

The Langevin equation derived by Shibata and Hashitsume with the help of the projection operator formula is shown to be the stochastic differential equation of the Ito type. From their derivation, it is natural to interpret it as that of the Stratonovich type. However, comparing the Shibata–Hashitsume (S–H) Langevin equation with the Langevin equation constructed within the framework of ... [Show full abstract] non-equilibrium thermo field dynamics (NETFD), the S–H Langevin equation seems to be that of the Ito type. By investigating this contradiction, it is found that the S–H Langevin equation leads to the consistent calculation when it is regarded as the stochastic equation of the Ito type.

In this article, I argue that Merleau-Ponty does, in fact, offer a coherent alternative to Realism and Idealism about appearances in the Phenomenology, and I examine some key features of the account that often give rise to the suspicion of inconsistency. I show that these features only appear inconsistent if we adopt certain assumptions about appearance that Merleau-Ponty would reject, and that we have good reason to question as well.

Claims concerning the validity, reliability and sensitivity of health-related quality of life measures tend to be based on the quantitative approach of psychometrics, which fails to identify when respondents: ... [Show full abstract] misinterpret questions; do not recall the information requested; or give answers that present themselves in a better or worse light. The paper presents some approaches to pre-testing and piloting survey questionnaires to check the interpretation of survey questions, using illustrations from the KENQOL project. The paper describes: how the intended referential and connotative meaning of each question was established; the criteria to judge the appropriateness of each question; the methods used to make those judgements; and the process of reviewing questions based on findings. The role of piloting is highlighted, and further reading is suggested for readers wishing to develop a model for their own investigation.
