... An institutional order is a societal level concept. The term itself is quite specific to institutional theory and we prefer the term 'core societal level institutions', which is similar to the term 'social institution' or societal sector as used in sociology (e.g., Giddens and Sutton, 2013;Stark, 2006). ...

In this essay we argue that institutional scholarship has become overly concerned with explaining institutions and institutional processes, notably at the level of the organization field, rather than with using them to explain and understand organizations. Especially missing is an attempt to gain a coherent, holistic account of how organizations are structured and managed. We also argue that when institutional theory does give attention to organizations it inappropriately treats them as though they are the same, or at least as though any differences are irrelevant for purposes of theory. We propose a return to the study of organizations with an emphasis upon comparative analysis, and suggest the institutional logics perspective as an appropriate means for doing so.

We examined the role of Islamic practices: Islamic work ethics, Islamic social finance, and religiosity in financial and environmental performances with corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a mediator. We collected data from 241 Pakistani enterprises through survey and applied structural equation modeling in AMOS. The results showed that Islamic work ethics and Islamic social finance have insignificant effects on financial performance but a significant influence on environmental performance. Religiosity has a significant effect on financial but an insignificant influence on environmental performance. Islamic practices significantly improve CSR activities in the SMEs, resulting in financial and environmental performances. Our research further showed that CSR partially mediates the effects of Islamic practices on financial and environmental performances. Top management of the SMEs is suggested to follow Islamic practices in order to configure their performance (financial and environmental). This research suggests policy implications for the policy makers to encourage Islamic practices in business dealing and trading in order to configure CSR and environmental practices.

In this first chapter, we identify the historical roots of ideological divisions between social work and sociology. Not all sociologists and social workers know that their disciplines were once closely linked. This is not surprising because it suited the professionalization projects of each discipline in the twentieth century to construct historical narratives that emphasized their differences rather than their commonalities. Internationally, however, the two disciplines emerged in close association. Within academic institutions, the disciplines often shared departments, although those shared departments became established at different times in different countries—around the turn of the nineteenth century into the twentieth in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe, and half a century later in Australia and New Zealand (Crothers 2008; Nash and Munford 2001).

This essay discusses my experiences teaching an undergraduate social theory course at a historically black college. Kufundisha is a culturally sensitive teaching model initially designed for teaching Black Studies. As a pedagogical model, Kufundisha pays particular attention to social characteristics of the student population and frames the discussion of the teaching-learning process, especially around educating students to critically analyze their social reality in ways that are empowering and liberatory. The components of the model, specific social theory course assignments, and student reactions are discussed. This model encourages the creation of an emancipatory educational environment that allows students to become active participants in their own learning experience.

Florence Kelley is a seminal, yet largely unrecognized, figure in the history of sociology. The article examines her contributions to the discipline and presents a socio-historical outline of the formation of her sociological thought. It highlights four themes that are integral to Kelley’s praxis: women, workers, immigrants and children. Following a discussion of these themes, I go on to argue that Kelley has been neglected generally amongst many contemporary sociologists as a result of possible sexist and anti-Marxist tendencies within the discipline. Finally, I throw some light on the fact that even radical circles in contemporary sociology tend to exclude systematically their radical female counterparts.
