Abstract

In this article, the recording of immigration of foreign-born in population registers is analysed for Andalusian municipalities from 1998 to 2010, as well as its temporal and spatial patterns. Using data from the Statistical Variation Statistics, the findings demonstrate how trends in immigration movements have been largely shaped by significant changes to legislation such as the Regularización of 2000, the Normalización of 2005, the entry of Romania in the European Union, and the economic recession since the second semester of 2008. The spatial analysis also highlights the differential impact of these aspects in the geography of Andalusia, which allow us to establish different municipal typologies according to the migration trends and the characteristics and geographical location of foreign-born populations.

Since 1960 the flows of international residential tourism and intra-European retiree migrations towards the Mediterranean coasts have intensified. The geographical embodiment of this process has generated new dual structures. We analyse the situation of northern European communities that live in estates set apart from the traditional urban centres, with special attention to the province of Alicante.

International retirement migration is currently one of the most significant movement of people in the European context. Spain has become one of the main destination countries for European retirees, hence the interest of Spanish social scientists in the analysis of this particular type of migration. The scarcity of information on the migration of retirees from northern to southern Europe has been the main barrier to the study of the extent of international and national retirement migration. Moreover, the lack of reliable official statistics has made research in this field extremely difficult. This paper discusses the sources of information available, both at the national and international level, and analyses the spatial distribution of the Northern European retirees living in Spain. The results show the geographical concentration of elderly foreign residents in the Mediterranean coast and the Canary Islands. One of the most relevant consequences of the spatial concentration of retired migrants is the rapid ageing of the demographic structures of those municipalities with the highest number of foreign residents.

In this article we examine the effects of immigration control using visa requirement on the Latin Americans flows into Spain. By analyzing data from the Residential Variation Statistics, this paper argues that fluctuations in the number of immigrants' flows not necessarily occur according to the control policy of the receiving country. Furthermore, it suggests that the requirement of visa to certain Latin American nationalities for entry into Spain had different impacts on these movements and on its sociodemographic characteristics over the years, specifically on age and sex structures.

Since 2006, Spain has been applying a new procedure to control illegal immigrants. Instead of massive and extraordinary regularisations, they have now installed a new permanent and personal procedure. Through this new model, called rooting (arraigo) and processed by Provincial Governmental sub-delegations, irregular migrants can obtain temporary residence permits if they can prove Social, Family or Labour rooting or by other extraordinary circumstances. These administrative data, collecting basic sociodemographic information on the person asking the permit and their residential situation, have never been exploited, due to, among others, the lack of harmonisation between provinces. However, results from a demographic analysis allow, on the one hand, to know the sociodemographic characteristics of those asking these permits and therefore to individual and national profiles, and on the other, to develop spatial studies of the phenomenon, that is to say, to analyse changes in municipal demand. The present paper focuses on how rooting has changed in municipalities belonging to the province of Barcelona. Series from Governmental sub delegation in Barcelona going from the beginning of this system in 2006 to the end of 2009 have been used for the analysis.

The topic of regularization of immigrants has occupied a position high on the agenda in Spain and elsewhere. In this paper, we contribute to this particular issue by providing an evaluative case study in Spain using administrative data from the Province of Barcelona from 2005 to 2009, which allows survival analysis, the follow-up of migrants’ trajectories after regularization and the examination of the hazard of lapsing back into irregularity. Our analysis reveals critical differences on the effectiveness of two pathways to earned legalization in Spain as a policy: the 2005 Normalisation and the Settlement Program in full operation since 2006.
