Review of Anacamptis sect. Morianthus taxa from SW Iberian Peninsula.- J.
Eur. Orch. 47 (2-4): 338-364.
The study of diversity of taxa belonging to Anacamptis sect. Morianthus has
revealed a new taxon: Anacamptis longicornu subsp. linkiana, and made
necessary some new combinations of taxa occurring in the whole
Mediterranean area, especially nothotaxa such as Anacamptis ×kusadasiensis,
A. ×nicodemi, A. ×orientecaucasica, A. ×subpapilionacea,
A. ×subpapilionacea nothosubsp. rebbasii, A. ×paparistoi, and A. ×yvesii.
Furthermore Anacamptis sect. Morianthus, A. caucasica, A. caucasica var.
albanica, A. champagneuxii subsp. tlemcenensis are proposed as new
combinations.

1. Introduction
During a prospection in Baixo Alentejo Litoral (Portugal) in spring 2015 we
found a new population of Anacamptis Rich., where between dominating
Anacamptis picta (Loisel.) R.M.Bateman and A. morio (L.) R.M.Bateman,
Pridgeon & M.W.Chase were present a unidentified plant, which at first
instance remembered a hybrid between A. morio × A. picta. Based on
consulted literature (TYTECA 1997; KRETZSCHMAR et al. 2007; VÁZQUEZ 2009;
DELFORGE 2009) and on its morphological characters also Anacamptis
×heraclea (Verg.) F.M.Vázquez (A. picta × A. laxiflora) seemed to be
possible. The presence of this taxon in the Mediterranean flora however was
always doubted in the past.
Orchis ×heraclea, described by VERGUIN (1908), was soon fully accepted by
CAMUS (1908: 210, Pl. 13, fig. 361) reproducing the drawing of VERGUIN
(1908: Pl. XIV fig. B), citing his illustration however erroneously as fig. 360
instead of fig. 361 (KÜNKELE, in sched.). This may have led to
misinterpretations in the past! Later CAMUS & CAMUS (Ic. Orch. Eur.: Pl. 47,
fig. 9. 1921); 1928: 249) and SOÓ (1931) followed Verguin. From the middle
of the 20th century on however the hybrid taxon for long time were not more
mentioned in the literature on orchids of Europe.
In reviews such as LANDWEHR (1977) or DELFORGE (2006) for European
Orchid flora and a specific review such as BOURNERIAS et al. (2005) for France
Orchis ×heraclea Verg., is not indicated. Only KRETZSCHMAR et al. (2007:
429) remembered this taxon, but modified the original concept, however
without reasoning, and differing from VERGUIN (1908), who classified it as
hybrid between Orchis morio × Orchis picta instead of O, laxiflora × Orchis
picta. Later DELFORGE (2009) and VÁZQUEZ (2009), considered valid the
hybrid-formula and confirmed the interpretation proposed by KRETZSCHMAR et
al. (2007), combining it to Herorchis ×heraclea (Verg.) P.Delforge
respectively Anacamptis ×heraclea (Verg.) F.M.Vázquez. The study of
material type however shows the proposal of KRETZSCHMAR et al. (2007) to be
340 Journal Europäischer Orchideen 47 (2-4): 2015.
not appropriate, as the sepals of type specimen are free, lanceolate, acute
(similar to A. laxiflora), not shaped hull (similar to Anacamptis sect.
Morianthus; and confirms the determination proposed by VERGUIN (l.c.).
Based on the type study of A. ×heraclea we have to revise our first
determination of the undetermined entity of Baixo Alentejo, as this possess
shaped hull sepals, the central lobule of labellum is short, with purple macules,
whereas A. ×heraclea type has not shape hull sepals, its sepals are free, the size
of central lobule of labellum is medium without spots. Our further study of the
morphology entity of the Baixo Alentejo confirms its particular status,
independent from the rest of the Morio-group species present at the same site.
It can be segregated from Anacamptis morio and A. picta for the longer and
apically widened spur, for lateral lobules of labellum longer than the central
lobule, with high ovary apex curve (<65º), not present in the A. morio or
A. picta exemplars.
Finally, further studies of additional materials from SW Iberian Peninsula
conserved in HSS (see appendix I) sub A. picta, can be attributed to the new
entity from Baixo Alentejo giving a better knowledge on its distribution in SW
Iberian Peninsula.
2. The Anacamptis problematic in SW Iberian Peninsula
As the hitherto presented studies confirm the absence of Anacamptis ×heraclea
from SW Iberian Peninsula, we retain it necessary to study the materials
collected in Baixo Alentejo in detail in comparison to all representatives of the
Morio-group known from SW Iberian.
2.1 Anacamptis longicornu subsp. longicornu
The first indication of Anacamptis longicornu from SW Iberian Peninsula
refers to Lusitania (LINK in REICHENBACH 1851); afterwards A. longicornu was
specifically confirmed by GUIMARAES (1887) in Algarve and Baixo Alentejo
(Portugal), included in CAMUS et al. (1908, 1928) too. Later further
populations were cited for Puebla de Obando and Roca de la Sierra populations
(Badajoz, España) by RIVAS GODAY (1964), collected in Northern Sevilla
province (AEDO 2005, LANDWEHR (1977) and annotated as present in SW
Iberian Peninsula. Recent revisions of the Orchid flora of SW Iberian
Peninsula (Portugal, Spain, Extremadura) (TYTECA 1997; TYTECA et al. 2000;
2003; AEDO 2005; DELFORGE 2006; KRETZSCHMAR et al. 2007; VÁZQUEZ
2009) however ignored its presence. The studies of RIVAS GODAY (1964) and
Journal Europäischer Orchideen 47 (2-4): 2015. 341
LANDWEHR (1977) indicated the presence of both A. longicornu and A. picta,
but TYTECA et al. (1986) and later KRETZSCHMAR et al. 2007 interpreted the
reports of GUIMARAES (1887) as variability of A. picta. Later TYTECA (1997)
doubts his former classification and emphasizes the need of a profound study.
A. longicornu is distributed mainly in North Africa, Sicily (Italy) and
occidental Mediterranean islands (AEDO 2005; KRETZSCHMAR et al. 2007), and
little populations in South France (BOURNERIAS et al. 2005; JULVE et al.,
2015), an historical site near Seville (SW Spain) was indicated by AEDO
(2005).
The information on orchid flora of Occidental Mediterranean published during
the XIX and XX centuries gives no clear distribution for A. longicornu. The
main limits to A. longicornu distribution knowledge are the different authors
opinions and the related taxa associated to A. longicornu.
2.2 Anacamptis champagneuxii subsp. tlemcenensis
Further to A. longicornu also Orchis longicornu var. tlemcenensis described by
BATTANDIER et al. (1895), from Algeria has to be considered. This new taxon
is near to A. picta, but its flowers are longer, with irregular spots, longer spur
and uniformly coloured labellum. The characters are different from the
nominate form of A. champagneuxii. Also, the morphological analysis
indicates proximity with A. longicornu and A. picta as already mentioned by
BATTANDIER et al. (1895); but this taxon is known from North Africa only
(BAUMANN et al. 2006; KRETZSCHMAR et al. 2007).
Long before BATTANDIER (1895) described his O. longicornu var.
tlemcenensis, BOISSIER (1842) described Orchis morio var. longicalcarata, an
intermediate taxon between O. longicornu and O. picta (sensu BOISSIER), but
without spots on the labellum; the distribution proposed by BOISSIER (1842)
extended from Spain and Southern France to Greece. The morphology as
characterized by BOISSIER places the new taxon near to A. champagneuxii and
Anacamptis caucasica (see Fig. 1)..
2.3 Orchis picta f. grandis
Apart from these validly published taxa of the morio-group, FREYN, under the
invalid name Orchis picta Loisel. f. grandis Freyn, mentioned an entity near to
A. picta, characterised by a high tall plant with flowers larger than 10 mm (in
herbarium, COI-WILLK 48906).

3.The Anacamptis diversity in SW Iberian Peninsula
This situation invites to a morphological comparison between the
indeterminate entity from SW Iberian Peninsula and the other taxa of
Anacamptis cited above. From this analysis insight into the position of the
indeterminate entity within the section Morianthus can be obtained, the single
data are shown in Table 1. As the absence of A. ×heraclea in SW Iberian
Peninsula has been confirmed, it was excluded from the analysis together with
Orchis morio L. var. longicalcarata and Orchis picta Loisel. f. grandis.

The comparison in Table 1 revealed the close relations of the indeterminate
entity from SW Iberian Peninsula with A. longicornu and A. picta, as well as a
close relation between the taxa A. tlemcenensis and A. champagneuxii s.s.
From these studies the populations from SW Iberian Peninsula result as an
independent taxon related to A. longicornu, for the similar inclination in the
flowers, curvature in the ovary, ratio between length ovary/ length flower
bract, macules morphology and distribution or apex morphology of the spur;
but with differences in the spur length (longer in A. longicornu), length of the
central labellum lobule (longer in A. longicornu), labellum length (longer in
SW Iberian populations) and the habitat (indifferent soil in A. longicornu
versus acid soils in SW Iberian populations).
A. picta and the indeterminate Anacamptis-entity from SW Iberian Peninsula
grow in the same habitat, have spots on the labellum and not prolonged tubers,
but the flowers dimension, morphology, position, flowers bract dimensions and
flowering periods are different.
By studying the synonymous taxa related to A. picta, we discovered the
incorrect attribution of Orchis nicodemi Cirilo ex Ten., as synonym to A. picta
Journal Europäischer Orchideen 47 (2-4): 2015. 345
(KRETZSCHMAR et al. 2007). The type has free sepals, an acute apex, not
rounded apex curved such as helmet, the label is intermediate to A. morio and
A. papilionacea: plane label, with lateral lobules undulated margin, and ample
central lobule, also short spur (less to label long) not inclined. The type of
Orchis nicodemi represents the hybrid between A. morio × A. papilonacea (see
Fig. 7).
From the other taxa of Anacamptis compared here we can discriminate the
indeterminate Anacamptis-entity from SW Iberian Peninsula for the ovary
curvature, flower inclination, ratio between length ovary/ length flower bract,
and for the shorter central labellum lobule.
4. Anacamptis longicornu subsp. linkiana, a new taxon from SW Iberia
In summary our results show the distinct status of the hitherto unknown SW
Iberian entity in comparison to related taxa and its close relation to
A. longicornu, justifying its description as a new subspecies of Anacamptis
longicornu subsp. linkiana, in honour of Johann Heinrich Friedrich Link (1767
– 1851), collector of its first botanical material (REICHENBACH f. 1851).

Habitat: Cork and Holm oak forest, and serial shrub formations of the SW
Iberian Peninsula. Frequently on acid soils, in small valleys with constant soil
humidity of sites during winter and summer. Habitats usually covered by trees
and shrubs, not open.
Although A. champagneuxii and A. tlemcenensis frequently have been
synonymized, our study confirms their close relation, but we can separate the
two taxa by labellum and spur morphologies. The labellum of
A. champagneuxii bears no spots, with central lobule equal or shorter than
lateral lobules, with spur widened at apex, whereas the labellum of
A. tlemcenensis is spotted (frequently with irregular rows), with central lobule
equal or longer than lateral lobules, and the spur is rounded at apex. These
results indicate the close relations between two taxa and we think
subordination of A. tlemcenensis to A. champagneuxii supports the above
comments (see also annotations referring to A. champagneuxii treatment in
VÁZQUEZ 2009).
