Abstract

In order to dispose of H3S odor pollution, a long-term lab-scale deodorization experiment is carried out continuously by bio-trickling filter packed with ZX01 stuffing. The results show that the removal efficiency of H2S is nearly 100% and the optimum gas retention time is 30 s when inlet concentration of H2S is 300 mg/m3. Metabolism product of H2S is mainly composed of SO42-. The bio-reactor is not blocked in the experiment in which the resistance is maintained at lower value. The bio-trickling filter needs not carry out a back washing frequently, and it can be operated steadily for a long term.

The removal of H2S from waste gas was investigated in bio-trickling filters with start-up modes of bacterium culturing, activated sludge culturing and natural culturing, respectively. The results showed that, with the inlet H2S concentration of 5 mg/m3, the outlet H2S concentrations for bio-trickling filters of bacterium culturing, activated sludge culturing and natural culturing were 15.7~17.4 μg/m3, 11.6~14.8 μg/m3 and 15.0~15.9 μg/m3, respectively. During the experiments, the pressure drops of gas in packed bed were respectively 3~4 mm, 6 mm and 4~5 mm water for three start-up modes mentioned above. The concentrations of sulfate in spraying liquid discharged from the column bottom were 14 mg/L, 22 mg/L and 17 mg/L, respectively, while the conversion of the sulfur were 45%, 60% and 50%, respectively. When increasing the inlet H2S concentration to 7 mg/m3, three bio-trickling filters were able to reach steady states after continuously running a week. During the steady-state period, no obvious changes of the outlet H2S concentration and pressure drop were found in the three bio-trickling filters, while the sulfate concentrations in discharged spraying liquid increased to 25 mg/L, 31 mg/L and 30 mg/L, respectively. It is found that the removal efficiency of H2S in the bio-trickling filter with activated sludge culturing was higher than that in the bio-trickling filters with bacterium culturing and natural culturing, respectively.

A long-term H2S deodorization experiment was operated in laboratory by biological trickling filter tower using iron oxide porous ceramsite based on attapulgite as padding. The results showed that when the inlet concentration of H2S in biotrickling filter was under 500 mg/m3, the spray volume of nutrient solution was more than 1.5 L/h and the optimum gas retention time was 54.9 s, the removal rate was more than 95%.The primary metabolic products were SO42- and the conversion rate was about 52.42 g/(m3·d). Above all, the trickling filter system was operated stably and effectively. Biological observation showed that a large number of microorganisms attached to the padding surface of trickling filter tower and the iron oxide ceramsite possessed a properties of chemical and biological inert, which was benefit for microorganism to attached to.

The stuffing is not only the support carrier which microbe grows, but also the transfer medium of fluid and gas, and performance of the stuffing influences the removing efficiency of hydrogen sulfide directly. Thus the removing efficiency hydrogen sulfide odor at moderate concentration with different stuffings (Raschig ring, Zeolite and Activated carbon) was studied by the bio-membrane method in this paper. The results are listed as follows:(1)The ranking of removing efficiencies of hydrogen sulfide of the three stuffings is activated carbon>zeolite>raschig ring under the same sprinkling amount, penetrating concentration, temperature or aerated amount. Among the four factors, the biggest effect on the stuffings is aerated amount, while the effect of sprinkling amount is the smallest. (2)When the penetrating concentration is 20mg/m3, the nutrient solution sprinkling amount is 10L/h, the temperature is30°C and the aerated amount is 0.16m3/h, the removing efficiency of three stuffings reaches the highest value.

The use of a biotrickling filter was investigated for a pilot field-scale elimination of NH3 gas and other odorous gases from a composting plant in Tongzhou District, Beijing. The inlet gas flow rate was 3500 m3/h and NH3 concentration fluctuated between 2.76–27.84 mg/m3, while the average outlet concentration was 1.06 mg/m3 with an average of 94.9% removal. Critical volumetric loading (removal efficiency=100%) was 11.22 g-N/(m3·h). The odor concentration removal was 86.7%. NH3 removal efficiency decreased as the free ammonia (FA) in the trickling liquid increased. The pressure drop was maintained at about 50 Pa/m and was never more than 55 Pa/m. During the experiment, there was neither backflushing required nor any indication of clogging. Overall, the biotrickling filter was highly efficient and cost-effective for the simultaneous biodegradation of NH3 and other odorous gases from composting, suggesting the possibility of treating odorous gases at the industrial level.

The removal of hydrogen sulfide by oxidation-adsorption on two type carbon fibers, Actitex FC1201 and RS1301, was studied. Two kinetic steps where identified. During the first step, the degradation appears to be limited by the oxidation reaction. In the second kinetic step, the by-products inhibit the hydrogen sulfide degradation. This leads to a limitation in the carbon site's accessibility and to a lower kinetic. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood model was used to correlate the experimental results and to estimate the kinetic (k) and the Langmuir adsorption (K) constants. For FC1201 fibers, the kinetic constant (k) is five time higher and the adsorption constant is five time lower compared to the RS1301 fibers. The role of the humidity was found to be highly beneficial for the removal of hydrogen sulfide. Especially in the second kinetic step, where it removes the by-product formed and therefore delays the occurrence of this low kinetic step. The kinetic constant (k) is strongly influenced by humidity while the Langmuir adsorption constant (K) seems independent. The effect of the nature of the gas phase on the reaction kinetic was also studied. Under a dry atmosphere, we note that the oxidation-reaction occurs even if the gaseous oxygen is not present. This oxidation is due to the oxygen surface function of the carbon fibers. Moreover, the degradation kinetic is faster under a dry nitrogen atmosphere. The presence of water traces leads to the acidification of the carbon surface, under oxygen or carbon dioxide atmospheres, and hence limits the hydrogen sulfide dissociation. In a humid atmosphere, the oxygen or carbon dioxide leads to a faster reaction kinetic. The acidification of the carbon surface is largely counterbalanced by the dissolution of the by-products.
