WorldCon 73’s ”Super Science Saturday” requested I submit an 8’ x 4’ research summary poster for the August 2015 conference. This is a reduced (due to file size restrictions of this website) resolution of the full poster. Full size available on the www.rpgresearch.com website. This summarizes research, program plans, and other information spanning my research so far from 2004 to 2015. Provides information on many adaptive approaches for many populations, to achieve therapeutic and educational goals, using all forms of role-playing games as intervention modalities, including tabletop RPG, live-action (LARP), and computer-based. Populations and needs addressed include: Autism Spectrum (ASD / Asperger’s / PDD), At-risk youth, the Deaf community, brain injury recovery (stroke, TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury)), development delays, social skills development, and more.

Session provided background and research information about the effects of role-playing gaming in all forms upon participants. It addresses the many inculcated concepts in popular culture regarding role-playing games and gamers, and presents the existing relevant research. All formats of role-playing gaming are discussed, including Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA) books, offline and online ... [Show full abstract] computer-based role-playing games, live-action role-playing (LARP), and tabletop role-playing games. The presentation includes research information on the inherent benefits, and any potential caveats, from participating in these various recreational activities. The session initially provides some historical information and then examples of each game format in a typical recreation setting. It then proceeds with the existing research using RPG for various educational and therapeutic interventions from other disciplines: psychiatry, psychology, education, sociology, cognitive, behavioural, etc. Additionally it illustrates how the application of TR methodologies is an excellent fit for these activities as an intervention modality for many populations in group and individual settings. It also provides some specific TR program plan examples for at-risk youth, Autism Spectrum (ASD / PDD), Deaf, brain injury (stroke, TBI, etc.), and other populations.

The hope is that this differentiation between formats will improve the quality of future research studies and program planning for those professionals in various disciplines using these recreational activities as intervention modalities. This document has been intermittently updated based on the research and evidence-in-practice available from public and private third-parties, as well as the evolution of the Hawkes-Robinson Role-Playing Game (RPG) Model and the Four Major RPG Formats initially outlined in 1983 and 2004.
