NOTA CIENTÍFICA
“Wild shot” photographs of an apparently undescribed
bug species of the tribe Anisoscelini from Costa Rica
(Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Coreidae)
Fotografías de campo de una especie de chinche de la tribu
Anisoscelini de Costa Rica aparentemente no descrita (Hemiptera,
Heteroptera, Coreidae)
Recently, Pamela Donaldson from Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu in India
sent the author photographs of different instars (Figs. 1a and 1b) and an
adult specimen (Fig. 2) of a bug species, which she had taken during a stay
in Costa Rica. Without any doubt, the species shown in the photographs
belongs to the tribe Anisoscelini within the family Coreidae.
An identification of the species was not possible, in spite of extensive
investigation, from the early works by DISTANT (1880-1893) and CHAM-
PION (1897-1901) to the online database Coreoidea Species File Online by
the COREOIDEASF TEAM.
Therefore, Dr. Harry Brailovsky from the Universidad Nacional Au-
tónoma de México (UNAM), a known expert for neotropical Coreidae, was
contacted — asking him if he could identify the species on the basis of
a photograph of an adult specimen which was sent to him. Dr. Brailovsky
informed the author that he could not find any similar bug in the collection
of the UNAM and that the species in doubt might be a new one (personal
communication).
Unfortunately, no specimens of the species were collected, meaning that
a valid description according to the rules of the ICZN is not possible.
Nevertheless, the photographs are published here. Additional data on
the finding may give the opportunity to search for specimens of the spe-
cies in the future, so —in case that it is a new one— the opportunity to
describe it may arise.
On 01.06.2015, Pamela Donaldson was able to take “wild shot” pho-
tographs of the reported species. Some of them are used to illustrate this
publication. The locality is situated in the Cahuita National Park (province
of Limón) on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. The photographs were
taken around 4:00 p.m. (local time).

Pamela Donaldson wrote: “I saw them in the Cahuita National Park,
(far SE Costa Rica on the Caribbean coast Lat: 9.74, Long: -82.84) in the
late afternoon… The larger 2 with black and white flags, I found on only
2 bushes, next to each other (though there were more of these bushes in
the park), and the one with 6 black flags on another bush, on the other
side of the trail, not far away. The trail ran parallel to the beach, in pla-
ces only 50 meters from the sea, and was of compacted sand.” (personal
communication).
As the light was poor, Pamela Donaldson went back to the same place
the following morning to get more photographs of the species, but she could
not discover any specimens.

... It was placed in the tribe Anisoscelini within the family Coreidae. Most likely, this assignment is not correct: The author was informed by Richard Packauskas (Department of Biological Sciences, Fort Hays State University, Hays, United States of America), a known expert for neotropical Coreidae, that the species should be placed in the tribe Stenoscelideini, which is considered a synonym of Placoscelini by some authors (COREOIDEASF TEAM, 2015). ...
