Analysing labels, associations, and sentiments in Twitter on the Abu Sayyaf kidnapping of Viktor Okonek

Authors:

Abstract

This article investigates Twitter data related to the kidnapping case of two German nationals in the southern region of the Philippines by the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG). It explores perceptions of the ASG, along with associated organizations and sentiments indicated in the tweets together with statistically significant relationships. Findings revealed that: “Rebel” and “Militant” were the most frequently used labels for the ASG; a majority of the tweets contained sentiments that assess threats such as abduction and kidnapping of hostages; and almost half contained words that indicate negotiation or concession to the demands of the captors. Logistic regression analyses on “Rebel” and “Islamist” revealed positive coefficients for these sentiments used as predictors. This meant that people who assessed threats and expressed sentiments that responders should concede to the captors’ demands were more likely to use the “Rebel” or “Islamist” labels. Rather than the two longstanding dominant narratives of the ASG as terrorists and criminals, the emerging rebel and militant labels suggest a more domestically and politically sensitive Twitter commentary than is represented in the work of the Al-Qaeda-centric paradigm exponents. These findings, along with the complex associated political and policy contexts and implications, are discussed in this article.

... Indeed, the most appropriate description of ASG's utilisation of social media is as a marketing and branding tool. For example, a reading of the rhetoric and propaganda presented by the ASG on social media since their affiliation with IS identifies them as rebels, militants and IS mimics (Smith & Reyes, 2015). In this regard, social media communications provide a useful way for the group to quickly and effectively rebrand so as to take advantage of opportunities. ...
... Although the use of YouTube, Facebook and Twitter has allowed groups such as ASG to largely circumvent their reliance on traditional media companies to advertise their cause and spread terror, it is important to recognise that traditional media has remained a significant actor. For example, an analysis of 9026 tweets related to the kidnapping of Warren Rodwell noted that four out of five top tweeters were news organisations (Smith & Reyes, 2015). This emerging symbiosis between terror groups, social media operations and traditional media companies acts to provide greater public exposure to terror activities and provides legitimacy to the ASG, while simultaneously driving traffic to news corporations' social media pages. ...

The advent of social media platforms has created an online environment that transcends geographic and political boundaries as well as traditional mechanisms of state-based authority. The decentralised nature of social media and its ability to disseminate content anonymously and to reach wide audiences has afforded violent extremist groups opportunities to further propaganda, recruitment, radicalisation, fundraising and operational planning. This paper examines three violent extremist-related groups operating in Asia Pacific: one ‘classic’ terrorist – Abu Sayyaf in the Philippines; one a dissident political party – Jamaat-e-Islami in Bangladesh; and one a broad ethno-religious separatist movement – the Uyghurs in China. Each study highlights how the adoption of proactive social media strategies affords the group numerous opportunities to maximise their reach, impact and effect. However, the same technological specificities that generate these possibilities also expose the groups to new vulnerabilities and risks.
... The use of a hash symbol (#) called a hashtag easily archives keywords that are assigned to a particular topic, and its value is derived from the real-time nature of sharing information within Twittersphere (Small, 2010). In addition, Twitter data can be generated from the Application Programming Interface (API) (Reyes & Smith, 2017) thereby giving researchers and brand owners access to rich data of tweets that can be easily analyzed with the aid of a software. ...

The graduation of Archer, the cat from De La Salle University, became a trending topic in Twitter. This study examined the Twitter posts and analyzed the patterns from these series of tweets and retweets. A content analysis was applied on the social media feeds related to the event. Using summative content analysis, the most frequently occurring words are graduation, cats, Archer, DLSU and mascot. The first four words are expected given the context of the event but an analysis of the word "mascot" has shown that Archer is better-suited as a brand ambassador because he humanizes the DLSU brand by presenting the value of education and the vision of finishing university through his graduation ceremony. Although he is an unofficial ambassador, the results from the study can provide insights for organizations to develop their social media engagement strategies beyond mascots and influencers.

The outbreak of terrorist events often causes tremendous damage to the country and society and arouses high attention from the public and an overwhelming response on the microblogging platform. Predicting the influence of microblogging in the context of terrorist events and revealing its evolutionary mode can help counterterrorism departments foresee potential risks, take effective countermeasures in time, and provide a reference for reducing public panic caused by terrorist events. In this study, Word2Vec is combined with the K-means clustering technique to discover the topics of microblogging, and an emotion analysis of microblogging is performed. The user features, time features, and content features of microblogging in the context of terrorist events are extracted. The prediction model of microblogging influence based on the logistic regression model was constructed and evaluated. The experimental results showed that the prediction accuracy of the model was 85.8%, which had superior performance over other six classification models. In addition, the high-influence characteristics of microblogging in the context of terrorist events were analyzed and summarized. Finally, a quantitative method of the influence of a microblogging topic based on the h-index was proposed. The evolution pattern of the influence of a microblogging topic was analyzed. The results can help predict microblog entries of high influence, understand the intensity and variation of public concern over terrorist events, and assist counterterrorism departments in taking scientific decisions.

The Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) is the preeminent jihadist group in Philippines. ASG's stated founding goal is to set up an Islamic state in Mindanao through jihad, but its commitment to pursuing this has been uneven. For long periods from its founding to the early 2010s, ASG was more preoccupied with kidnapping and organised crime for profit. But the emergence of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) reinvigorated ASG's commitment to jihad, prompting its rallying of like-minded groups to capture Marawi for five months in 2017. This paper analysed ASG's propaganda using quantitative and qualitative methods to examine how the group has in the years since ISIS' emergence justified and perceived its use of violence. Nineteen ASG statements were selected for close analysis, alongside other short announcements and images from ASG. Like other jihadist groups, ASG justifies its violent actions by characterising them as an existential fight against Muslim oppression and the enemies of Islam. Since ISIS' rise, ASG has seen the group as the leader of the global jihad, reiterating support for ISIS and modifying its propaganda to resemble ISIS'. ASG also devotes airtime to conveying a strong sense of camaraderie and belonging among its fighters, whom ASG portrays as leading purpose-driven and adventure-filled lives. Together, these elements make for a convincing narrative, and generate the seductive impression that ASG membership is an attractive lifestyle choice for local Muslims, most of whom remain mired in disadvantaged and mundane existences. These factors will continue to drive more locals into the arms of ASG, ensuring the group remains resilient and dangerous.

The thermomagnetic properties of a Ising ferrimagnetic system on a bipartite square lattice of spins SiA=2 and σjB=5/2 with different single-ion anisotropies are analyzed by Monte Carlo simulations. We obtained the phase diagrams at finite temperature of the total magnetization (MT), the magnetization of sublattices (MA,MB), specific heat (C) and the total susceptibility (χT) per spin of the model. In the planes (D1/|J1|/kBT/|J1|) and (D2/|J1|/kBT/|J1|) the critical and compensation temperatures have been deduced. We found that single-ion anisotropy interactions play an important role for the existence of compensation temperatures. Compensation points may be present, for a specific range of crystal field of sublattice spins σjB=5/2, even when the anisotropy field of sublattice spins SiA=2 is zero. Mean field theory predicts a wide range of parameters where the system presents even several compensation temperatures, in most of these regions we found none.

On 20 September 2001, in response to the terrorist attacks on the United States nine days earlier, President George W. Bush addressed a joint session of the US Congress to explain who had perpetrated the attacks and how his administration would respond. President Bush made clear that ‘(o)ur war on terror begins with al-Qaeda, but it does not end there. It will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped and defeated’ (Bush 2001). Bush described al-Qaeda as ‘a collection of loosely affiliated terrorist organizations’, led by Osama bin Laden, with a network extending to sixty countries. In sum, Bush committed the US to an open-ended global war on terrorism: Americans should not expect one battle, but a lengthy campaign, unlike any other we have ever seen. It may include dramatic strikes, visible on TV, and covert operations, secret even in success. We will starve terrorists of funding, turn them one against another, drive them from place to place, until there is no refuge or no rest. And we will pursue nations that provide aid or safe haven to terrorism. Every nation, in every region, now has a decision to make. Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists. From this day forward, any nation that continues to harbor or support terrorism will be regarded by the United States as a hostile regime. (Bush 2001)

The media serve as the channels used to deliver information or research data for any purpose. With media and technology combined, if today a person is sitting in one corner of the world, he or she can send knowledge and words to an unimaginable number of people without fear of being interrupted or argued with. This paper explores the impact of media technology in our lives. The advent of the "social media" is playing a role in all facets of our lives. Its overriding existence with free search engines has changed the trends in education, economics, politics, and our day-to- day routine. Here we highlight how the quest of technology in the form of "social media" has been an important aspect of getting this world expressed in terms of bytes. The social media include web-based technology that has changed communication into a more interactive dialogue. The social media have completely transformed the way we connect or reconnect with old friends and acquaintances, entertain ourselves, pursue our hobbies, shop, relax, and look for jobs. The social media are the primary communication medium today for a new generation of digitally aware consumers.

Long before the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, awakened the United States and the Western world to the heightened level of the terrorist threat, Southeast Asia had been dealing with this threat. The bombing in Bali that killed 202 people, many of them Australian tourists, was by no means the region's first experience with Islamic extremism, which can be traced back to the 1940s, and the Darul Islam struggle. The most recent group to emerge is Al-Jama'ah Al-Islamiyah (AJAI), the most potent Islamic terrorist organization to date in the region and the group behind the Bali bombing. Understanding the process of Talibanization in Southeast Asia, which was once an oasis of moderate Islam in the modern world, is a key to unraveling the mystery of the increased radicalization in the region. Essentially, this involved the establishment of a political system that was more Islamic in character, either nationally or within a specific territory of a national state. This book analyzes the increasing Talibanization of Southeast Asia, a relatively new phenomenon that involves the adoption of Islamist doctrines, ideologies, and values that are largely militant in character, and that for some groups includes the adoption of violence to achieve their goals. This has succeeded in posing one of the most serious security challenges to the region since the end of the Cold War. Jihadists are operating in small and localized cells even though the broad goals remain the same, namely, to spread sharia, establish an Islamic state, and bring down secular regimes. As most governments do not have the credibility or the expertise to diminish the threat posed by Islamist extremism, Wahhabism, and Salafism, Southeast Asia is in danger of being Talibanized in the near future.

This book argues that, given the existence of a discrete Malay archipelago security complex, it is a fallacy for the United States to approach this region primarily through the prism of global counter-terrorism.

The two most wanted terrorists in Southeast Asia — a Malaysian and a Singaporean — are on the run in the Philippines, but they manage to keep their friends and family updated on Facebook. Filipinos connect with al-Qaeda-linked groups in Somalia and Yemen. The black flag — embedded in al-Qaeda lore — pops up on websites and Facebook pages from around the world, including the Philippines, Indonesia, the Middle East, Afghanistan, Australia, and North Africa. The black flag is believed to herald an apocalypse that brings Islam's triumph. These are a few of the signs that define terrorism's new battleground: The Internet and social media. In this groundbreaking work of investigative journalism, Maria Ressa traces the spread of terrorism from the training camps of Afghanistan to Southeast Asia and the Philippines. Through research done at the International Center for Political Violence and Terrorism Research in Singapore and sociograms created by the CORE Lab at the Naval Postgraduate School, the book examines the social networks which spread the virulent ideology that powered terrorist attacks in the past 10 years. Many of the stories here have never been told before, including details about the 10 days during which Ressa led the crisis team in the Ces Drilon kidnapping case by the Abu Sayyaf in 2008. The book forms the powerful narrative that glues together the social networks — both physical and virtual — which spread the jihadi virus from bin Laden to Facebook.

Al Qaeda (AQ) has evolved into a significantly different terrorist organization than the one that perpetrated the September 11, 2001, attacks. At the time, Al Qaeda was composed mostly of a core cadre of veterans of the Afghan insurgency against the Soviet Union, with a centralized leadership structure made up mostly of Egyptians. Most of the organization's plots either emanated from the top or were approved by the leadership. Some analysts describe pre-9/11 Al Qaeda as akin to a corporation, with Osama Bin Laden acting as an agile Chief Executive Officer issuing orders and soliciting ideas from subordinates. Some would argue that the Al Qaeda of that period no longer exists. Out of necessity, due to pressures from the security community, in the ensuing years it has transformed into a diffuse global network and philosophical movement composed of dispersed nodes with varying degrees of independence. Al Qaeda franchises or affiliated groups active in countries such as Yemen and Somalia now represent critical power centers in the larger movement. Some affiliates receive money, training, and weapons; others look to the core leadership in Pakistan for strategic guidance, theological justification, and a larger narrative of global struggle. Over the past year senior government officials have assessed the trajectory of Al Qaeda to be "less centralized command and control, (with) no clear center of gravity, and likely rising and falling centers of gravity, depending on where the U.S. and the international focus is for that period." While a degraded corporate Al Qaeda may be welcome news to many, a trend has emerged over the past few years that some view as more difficult to detect, if not potentially more lethal. The Al Qaeda network today also comprises semi-autonomous or self radicalized actors, who often have only peripheral or ephemeral ties to either the core cadre in Pakistan or affiliated groups elsewhere. According to U.S. officials Al Qaeda cells and associates are located in over 70 countries. Sometimes these individuals never leave their home country but are radicalized with the assistance of others who have traveled abroad for training and indoctrination through the use of modern technologies. The name "Qaeda" means "base" or "foundation," upon which its members hope to build a robust, geographically diverse network. Understanding the origins of Al Qaeda, its goals, current activities, and prospective future pursuits is key to developing sound U.S. strategies, policies, and programs. Appreciating the adaptive nature of Al Qaeda as a movement and the ongoing threat it projects onto U.S. global security interests assists in many facets of the national security enterprise, including securing the homeland, congressional legislative process and oversight; alignment of executive branch resources and coordination efforts; and prioritization of foreign assistance. The focus of this report is on the history of Al Qaeda, known (or attributed) actions and suspected capabilities of the organization and nonaligned entities, and an analysis of select regional Al Qaeda affiliates. This report may be updated as events warrant.
