A Study on Graduate and Undergraduate Students’ Aspects of Leadership Characteristics

Abstract
Students going through the process of education at the tertiary level are expected to possess good leadership skills. These skills are essential and need to be developed among the students via the informal and formal educational system. A group of students from the faculty of education were given the Leadership Assessment Instrument to rate themselves on aspects of leadership skills. Their responses were analyzed to give five traits of leadership characteristics: focused drive, emotional intelligence, building trust or enabling others, conceptual thinking, and systems thinking. It was found that mean scores for all the characteristics were higher for the graduate students as compared to the undergraduates. The highest mean score for both groups of students was within the trait of emotional intelligence, and the lowest mean score for both groups was within the trait of conceptual thinking. The findings showed that many students have the competency to understand and master their emotions and those of others.   • [Show abstract] [Hide abstract] ABSTRACT: Despite copious studies relating religiosity to various psycho-social criteria, it has not been thoroughly explored in relation to emotional intelligence (EI), the ability to perceive, understand and manage emotions toward adaptive behavior. This study examined the extent to which religiosity, operationalized as religious orientation and behavior, was related to perceived EI in self-report measures among 148 church attending adult Christians. Results showed a positive correlation between intrinsic religious orientation and perceived EI, and in particular, its subcomponent emotional understanding, as well as emotional and cognitive empathy. Among behavioral measures of religiosity, only emotional understanding correlated with behavioral indices, though perceived EI overall varied significantly between groups of different levels of religious commitment, as indicated by church status and ministry service. While both attitudinal and behavioral religiosity factors were significantly predictive of perceived EI, the former proved to be more predictive than the latter. Implications of these results and limitations of the study are discussed.

  • [Show abstract] [Hide abstract] ABSTRACT: Leaders in medicine have called for transformative changes in healthcare to address systems challenges and improve the health of the public. The purpose of this study was to elicit the perspectives of students, faculty physicians and administrators regarding the knowledge and competencies necessary in an undergraduate leadership curriculum. A mixed-methods study was conducted using focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews with faculty physicians and administrative leaders, as well as a written survey of medical student leaders. Twenty-two faculties participated in focus groups and interviews; 21 medical students responded to the written survey. Participants identified emotional intelligence, confidence, humility and creativity as necessary qualities of leaders; and teamwork, communication, management and quality improvement as necessary knowledge and skills. Students perceived themselves as somewhat or fully competent in communication (90%), conflict resolution (70%) and time management (65%), but reported minimal or no knowledge or competence in coding and billing (100%), writing proposals (90%), managed care (85%) and investment principles (85%). Both faculty and students believed that experiential training was the most effective for teaching leadership skills. Study participants identified the necessary qualities, knowledge and skills to serve as goals for an undergraduate leadership curriculum. Future studies should address optimal methods of teaching and assessing leadership skills among medical students.

  • [Show abstract] [Hide abstract] ABSTRACT: Examined the development of college students who were involved in student organizations (SOs) and leadership roles (LRs). In the 1st year, 1,193 freshmen completed the Student Developmental Task and Lifestyle Inventory (SDTLI): In the 3rd year, 256 of those Ss participated in a follow-up study by completing the SDTLI, a questionnaire concerning their usage of programs and services, and an interview. Ss who were members of SOs had significantly higher life management scores at the time of matriculation. However, Ss who pursued membership in SOs showed change in many of the tasks, subtasks, and scales of the SDTLI by their junior year. Involvement in SOs seemed to have positive effects on Ss' total academic experience. Ss who became leaders had SDTLI scores that were different from their peers at entry to the institution and the opportunity to participate in LRs was related to continued growth for these Ss who began "ahead of" their peers.
