Abstract

This paper is a bibliometric study of the publication patterns of a selected group of academic and research scientists of ten universities of South Africa for a period of five years, 1992-96. The subject fields surveyed are Physics, Chemistry, Plant and animal Sciences, and Microbiology/Biochemistry. These ten universities vary considerably with respect to standards of education, quantity of research and publication and overall progress. The general purpose of the study is 1) to determine whether academic status and prestige have any impact on the level of productivity, 2) to study the productivity within different areas of science, 3) to investigate whether or not the level of funding and/or the prospects of getting funded has any influence on the level of productivity in each area of science and their pattern of publication. The study collected two sets of data through a scientometric analysis of science citation index and a questionnaire. The study demonstrates that there is a direct relationship between status and publication productivity. The study further shows that there are significant differences in productivity between areas of sciences but that there is no direct relationship between institutional funding and productivity.

... Further, there has been an apparent increase in publications from previously disadvantaged countries such as Brazil, India, and Turkey, (CNRS 2018;Grosetti et al., 2013;Adams, et al., 2010), as shown in Figure 2. Nevertheless, while some scientometric data appear to suggest an increase in the number of scientific publications originating from some African countries such as South Africa, Nigeria, and others (Uthman and Uthman, 2007;Pouris and Pouris 2009), as illustrated in Figures 3 and 4. This marginal increase, which is ascribed to local policy initiatives (Jacobs, 2001;Alabi, 1989;Jacobs and Ingwersen, 2000), does not appear to fully reflect, the low rate of academic research publications from SSA and other LMICs (Adams, et al., 2010, Paraje et al., 2005. ...

This is particularly true in fields such as medical sciences, where diseases are no respecters of frontiers, especially in the era of globalization (Valadier, 2001), exemplified by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic (Fisher and Bubola 2020;Chima, 2020). Valuable information on neglected tropical diseases (Drugs for Neglected Diseases Working Group, 2001), as well as unique information on topics such as tropical biodiversity and traditional medicine, are likely better covered in scientific research from developing countries and their local journals (Alabi, 1989;Jacobs and Ingwersen, 2000;Jacobs, 2001;Tijssen, 2007;Piotrowski, 2012, Tangwa et al., 2019. The aim was to systematically analyze the patterns of scatter of both scientific and non-scientific articles by the scientists of the Agronomy, Biology, Food Science and Technology, Forestry, Wood Science and Technology, and the Zootechnical Departments of the Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana in the Slovenian national journals in the period 1995-2002. The national online catalogue and bibliographic databases COBISS/ COBIB were employed to this end. Two experimental databases were set up to upload the data for further analysis. 240 different journals that published 4163 different articles were identified. 3141 Scientific and 1022 non-scientific articles were published in 82 and 203 journals respectively. 45 journals published both scientific and non-scientific articles. 12 journals published more than 100 articles each, and 78 different journals published a single article. The five core journals published 39% of all articles. This is an assessment of the national serial productivity and does not reflect the total scientific productivity as many authors may publish mainly in international periodicals which were not the object of this analysis. The main difficulties of this kind of study were presented in establishing a uniform group of authors. COBIB can be used to some extent but with limitations as a lot of manual editing is needed to extract the relevant data into a consistent group of articles for further analysis.

Climate change has affected lives of all human beings around the globe making it a growing area of research concern among scientists worldwide. Researchers have used bibliometrics to analyse research productivity and the impact of climate change research output. This study aimed at analysing the trends of research output on climate change in Tanzania from 1964 to 2021. Specifically, the study investigates the growth of publications and citation impact on climate change in Tanzania during the period under study. Data were searched, retrieved and analysed from Dimensions.ai. The results show that the trend of publications on climate change in Tanzania is growing with peak production in 2020 and 2021. Researchers in developed nations like USA, UK, and Germany have significantly contributed to the production of publications on the subject and so are their citations. Renowned public universities and research institutions in Tanzania have contributed more publications on the subject. Research outputs published in Open Access are increasingly contributing to climate change scholarly research output. Researchers from developed countries are highly cited compared to local researchers. Comparing the productivity of research institutions in Tanzania, the University of Dar es Salaam, Sokoine University of Agriculture, and the Nelson Mandela Institute of Science and Technology have a large share of publications and citations on climate change. Publications from high Impact Factor open-access journals are highly cited. This study recommends further studies on climate change using bibliometrics including assessing the impact of climate change publications on policy influence in the country.

Aim Analysing Level of Evidence (LOE) provides an insight to evidence-based medicine (EBM). The aim of our study was to evaluate and analyse trends in Levels of Evidence (LOE) in Journal of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery (MAOS) since inception, i.e. December 2009 along with categorization into subtopics. Methodology LOE for each article was determined according to modified American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) scale and National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Evidence Hierarchy. Results A total of 1264 articles were included in the final analysis, out of which high-quality evidence (Level A) accounted for 7% of the journal. The percentage of Level I/II (Level A) has increased from 2.09% in 2009/2010 to 12.74% in 2019/2020, representing a promising trend toward higher-quality research in just 10 years. Case reports and narrative reviews with Level of Evidence value “D” account the highest number (36%) of all the published articles. The majority of articles fell under Class 2 (Maxillofacial pathology) classification (35%) highlighting myriad of articles covering pathologies and various reconstruction methods, followed by trauma (16%). Conclusion The status of LOE and categorizing of published articles are the first step to audit and quantify the nature of literature published by JMOS and may further help in refining the quality of research jointly by the researchers and the editorial board.

Research output from Agriculture and Veterinary Complex of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria were analyzed using bibliometric methods to ascertain contributions and the media used for dissemination of agricultural information. The objective is to find out the number of articles the complex has contributed over a period of eleven years (2002-2012); determine the research output formats serving as courier for the dispersion of agricultural information; determine the contributions made by each unit of the complex and to see which nature of collaboration dominated the space of contributions. The findings revealed that a total of 1137 articles were published and contributed to different agricultural information domain and journals dominated the research output formats (56.46%). Nature of collaboration in the complex revealed four regimes; however internal collaboration persisted (54.96%). In conclusion, faculty members of the six units contribute to the information base and growth of agriculture, but at varied capacities. The maintenance and sustenance of the numerous couriers were recommended because of the stakeholders they serve and capacities to achieve effective and efficient dispersion of research output. Periodic assessment should be tied to a reward system to boost individuals as well as unit's performance, while at the same time ensuring that a platform is operated to encourage participation in research activities. Though collaboration is internal, it is should be intra-and cross-disciplines to produce specialized information, ensure contributions from diversified opinions, making research visible, reduce duplication of research efforts and waste of scarce resources.
... It is difficult if not impossible to assess how/if an individual professor contributes to quality teaching and service from outside his/her home institution. However, analysis of publications can provide one reasonably obtainable indication of research productivity, which strongly impacts faculty prestige (Jacobs 2001, Budd and Seavey 1996, Pouris 1989, positively affects faculty satisfaction (Husemann et al. 2017), provides some evidence of faculty motivation (Lechuga and Lechuga 2012), constitutes a very important non-teaching activity (AAUP 2013, Medawar 1979, and has a known pattern of growth in the life sciences from graduation through retirement (Diamond 1984, Gingras et al. 2008, McCallum 2010. Further, previous research demonstrates that reduced motivation to conduct research activities like publishing is related to burnout ). ...

Academic burnout is an occupational health syndrome with both psychological and physiological symptoms. It manifests as a debilitating and sometimes life-threatening condition when the extremely educated are under excessive social and occupational stress. Recent studies demonstrate that societal and economic changes have induced metamorphosis of the professoriate from a low-stress to a high-stress occupation. Our knowledge about the nature and incidence of burnout among professors in the United States comes largely from studies confined to specific institutions, medical schools, and research universities. Publication is probably the most obvious and obtainable signal of reduced research productivity, and it is closely connected with academic burnout. I shed light on the potential incidence of academic burnout in university faculty by examining the productivity of 612 tenured life science faculty members from non-doctoral granting departments at 76 regional state universities and liberal arts colleges distributed among 13 randomly selected states. Anything claimed to be a publication on a faculty member's CV or webpage, or via a Google Scholar query was accepted. This definition inflated publication counts making unpublished faculty more difficult to identify. Despite this, about 37% of tenured faculty went unpublished from 2008-2012. State jurisdictions averaged from 19% to 52% of faculty without publications. Departments awarding masters degrees had more published faculty than non-masters awarding departments. The large numbers of unpublished faculty during this five-year window constitutes a smoking gun suggesting that academic burnout (a.k.a., adrenal exhaustion) may be a widespread problem in American regional state universities and public liberal arts colleges. However, supporting psychological and physiological tests are needed to rule out or support definitively the role of academic burnout in the revealed publication patterns of faculty at these mid-tier schools. Institutions with low faculty publication rates should screen faculty to evaluate the degree to which burnout is present, regardless of teaching load. These results beg to question if immediate need exists for strategic implementation of college-wide, self-help programs to reduce the occurrence of stress-related disorders like academic burnout which may threaten the stature of American higher education. 1

The highlight in this study is the gender dimensions and perspectives in the demographic studies completed by the students at the institute considered with respect to the programs, the gender dimensions attended to in the study topics and the population factors addressed in the research work. The study analyses the theses and projects done by graduate students at the population studies and research institute, University of Nairobi, from 1978 to 2011. The findings revealed immense gender disparities in both programs and study topics pursued by students; the glaring absence of gender dimension in the size of male and female students in the various study programmes; the male –female preferences for studies on fertility, mortality and migration and minimal consideration of the male and female perspectives in the various topics of study pursued by the graduate students. The methodology employed in the study used frequencies to find out the proportion of the male-female and presented the data in figures and tables. This paucity of gender dimensions is projected as having a profound implication on the quality of teaching, and directions of research at the institute in the context of evolutions in content, methodologies and theories of demographic research. The recommendations are that appropriate measures and strategies need to be taken to stimulate the interest of both male and female students in the population studies and research programs offered by the University of Nairobi and to promote considerations of gender in the conception and design of the demographic studies.

The study was retrospective in 367 (48,6%), prospective in 35 (4,6%) and experimental in 31 (4,1%) articles. The most studied subjects of the studies were spinal deformity (n=181), spinal trauma (n=174), degenerative spine (n=130), spine tumors (n=71) and spine infections (n=65). Conclusion: It is found out that most of the articles are consisted of retrospective studies, reviews and case report, which are with lower level of evidence. We think that this is due to the fact that the journal is not indexed in well-known data bases such as PubMed. It is essential to increase the impact factor of JTSS and make it better known in order to improve Turkish spine surgery research and practice. For this reason, we think Turkish spine surgeons supporting JTSS with scientifically qualified studies with higher levels of evidence will help achieving this goal.

The present study aims to introduce and analyze bibliometric application within Web and also to expounds on the status of link analysis in order to point out its application with respect to the existing web-based information sources. Findings indicate that bibliometrics could have required application in the area of digital resources available through Net. Link analysis is a process by which one could make statistical analysis of correlation between hyperlinks and therefore understand the accuracy, veracity and efficacy of citations within a digital document. Link analysis, in effect, is counted as a part of information ranking algorithm within the web environment. The number, linkage and quality of given links to a website are of utmost importance for ranking/status in the Web. The tools applied in this topic include, page ranking strategy, link analysis algorithm, latent semantic indexing and the classical input-output model. The present study analyzes Big Web and Small Web link analysis and explains the means for utilizing web charts in order to better understand the link analysis process.

This paper is an informetric analysis of 220 papers published by academic faculty at the University of Zambia from 2002 to June 2007, downloaded from the Thomson Scientific database. The papers were analysed for authorship patterns and collaboration. The highest number of papers published in a year was 63 in 2006. The average number of publications per year was 36.7, and the highest collaboration coefficient of 0.91 was found in the year 2004. The degree of collaboration varied from one discipline to another. Collaboration was more intensified in the applied sciences. Fifty-four countries collaborated with UNZA faculty in research. The top ten most collaborating countries were USA, England, Japan, Belgium, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Denmark, Norway, Australia, and Sweden. The results confirm that the patterns of collaboration between UNZA researchers and foreign researchers fit the Lotka Law of distribution. The study also established a positive relationship between author productivity and author collaboration. The more collaborative an author is, the more productive that author is. Finally, the study observed a growing collaboration between University of Zambia researchers and other researchers in the Southern African universities.

The paper is a bibliometric study of the publication patterns and impact of South African scientists 1981–96, with special emphasis on the period 1992–96. The subject fields surveyed are Physics; Chemistry, Plant and Animal Sciences; and Biochemistry/Microbiology. Scientists were selected from the ten universities of the Eastern Cape, Western Cape and KwaZulu Natal, which vary considerably, with respect to standards of education, quantity of publications, development and overall progress. The general purpose is two-fold: 1) to observe the publication and citation trends during 1981–96, a period which covers significant policy changes in the country, in particular the end of apartheid 1994; within this context 2) to investigate the patterns used by scientists 1992–96 from these different institutions in publishing the results of their research in the form of conference papers or (inter)national journals. The study collected two sets of data through a scientometric analysis of Science Citation Index and a questionnaire. With the exception of Physics, the results demonstrate a decreasing South African world share, in particular for Plant & Animal Sc. publications, and a similar decline of citations starting in 1986/87. Further, the citation impact relative to the world, after a substantial drop 1985–93 probably representing the international embargo period, in 1994–96 reaches the same level as observed in 1985–89. Also, the study shows that there is a direct relation between academic position, research experience and productivity among South African Scientists in the four scientific disciplines.

It is important for students, researchers, and research funding organizations to be able to rank academic institutions, as future employment opportunities and research funding are determined by the quality of the institution. This article ranks fourteen South African academic institutions according to the number of their front-line researchers as identified by a large scale peer evaluation, and according to their research output. The two rankings are found to be highly correlated. It is argued that the high correlation provides evidence for the value of “publication counts” as a proxy for research quality and that research output is an efficient and easily obtained predictor of university rankings according to peer reviews. © 1989 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
