Abstract and Figures

Brevicatenospora enteroproliferata anam. gen. et sp. nov. and Beltraniopsis aquatica anam. sp. nov. are described and illustrated on decaying leaves of Andira inermis and an unidentified plant submerged in the 'Ancón stream, Mil Cumbres, Pinar del Rio Province, Cuba. The former is distinguished by hologenous, unilocal, indeterminate conidiogenous cells with numerous enteroblastic percurrent proliferations and polymorphic unicellular, red-brown to dark brown conidia in short chains and the latter is characterized by unicellular, fusiform to navicular, brown conidia.

Species of the Beltrania group are constantly identified in association with a variety of plant debris in Brazil and different localities of the world. Leaf litter samples of Myrcia splendens and Pera glabrata were collected in the Reserva Biológica de Una, municipality of Una, Bahia state, Brazil, in August 2012, and incubated in moist chambers. Two specimens related to Beltrania group were isolated and identified by morphological criteria. This study aimed to describe and illustrate Beltraniopsis rhombispora for the first time in Brazil. Hemibeltrania decorosa previously reported from Caatinga Biome, Bahia state, has been cited for the first time for Atlantic Forest.
... Castañeda -Ruiz, Minter & Saikawa and Beltraniopsis aquatica R.F. Castañeda-Ruiz & M. Stadler were described in submerged litter collected in the Cuban tropical forest (Castañeda-Ruiz et al. 2006b). However, studies on fungi from submerged decayed leaves are still scarce and require a deeper study on the diversity of this group. ...

Fungi belonging to the genus Cladosporium are cosmopolitan and occur in various substrates and hosts. Nevertheless, this is the first time that we have described this genus colonizing leaf litter submerged in water. We surveyed Cladosporium spp. associated with submerged leaf litter, from three localities belonging to the Atlantic Forest biome in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. A multilocus DNA sequence typing approach employing ITS, Actin, and Translation elongation factor 1-α region/genes associated with morphological and cultural analyses were used to identify these species. The species C. angulosum and C. anthropophilum are reported for the first time in Brazil, and a new species for the genus is described here as C. puris.

A comprehensive account of fungal classification from freshwater habitats is outlined and discussed in the present review based on literature of biodiversity studies and recent morpho-phylogenetic analyses. A total of 3,870 freshwater fungal species are listed with additional details on the isolation source, habitat, geographical distribution, and molecular data. The Ascomycota (2,968 species, 1,018 genera) dominated the freshwater fungal taxa wherein Sordariomycetes (823 species, 298 genera) had the largest number, followed by Dothideomycetes (677 species, 229 genera), Eurotiomycetes (276 species, 49 genera), and Leotiomycetes (260 species, 83 genera). Other phyla included in the updated classification of freshwater fungi are: Chytridiomycota (333 species, 97 genera), Rozellomycota (221 species, 105 genera), Basidiomycota (218 species, 100 genera), Blastocladiomycota (47 species, 10 genera), Monoblepharomycota (29 species, 6 genera), Mucoromycota (19 species, 10 genera), Aphelidiomycota (15 species, 3 genera), Entomophthoromycota (6 species, 4 genera), Mortierellomycota (5 species, 3 genera), Olpidiomycota (4 species, 1 genus), Zoopagomycota (3 species, 2 genera), and Sanchytriomycota (2 species, 2 genera). The freshwater fungi belong to 1,361 genera, 386 families and 145 orders. The Pleosporales and Laboulbeniaceae are the largest freshwater fungal order and family comprised of 391 and 185 species, respectively. The most speciose genera are Chitonomyces (87, Laboulbeniomycetes), Verrucaria (50, Eurotiomycetes), Rhizophydium (52, Rhizophydiomycetes), Penicillium (47, Eurotiomycetes), and Candida (42, Saccharomycetes).

Sordariomycetes is one of the largest classes of Ascomycota that comprises a highly diverse range of fungi mainly characterized by perithecial ascomata and inoperculate unitunicate asci. Freshwater Sordariomycetes play an important role in ecosystems and some of them have the potential to produce bioactive compounds. This study documents and reviews the freshwater Sordariomycetes, which is one of the largest and important groups of fungi in aquatic habitats. Based on evidence from DNA sequence data and morphology, we introduce a new order Distoseptisporales, two new families, viz. Ceratosphaeriaceae and Triadelphiaceae, three new genera, viz. Aquafiliformis, Dematiosporium and Neospadicoides, 47 new species, viz. Acrodictys fluminicola, Aquafiliformis lignicola, Aquapteridospora fusiformis, Arthrinium aquaticum, Ascosacculus fusiformis, Atractospora aquatica, Barbatosphaeria lignicola, Ceratosphaeria aquatica, C. lignicola, Chaetosphaeria aquatica, Ch. catenulata, Ch. guttulata, Ch. submersa, Codinaea yunnanensis, Conioscypha aquatica, C. submersa, Cordana aquatica, C. lignicola, Cosmospora aquatica, Cylindrotrichum submersum, Dematiosporium aquaticum, Dictyochaeta cangshanensis, D. ellipsoidea, D. lignicola, D. submersa, Distoseptispora appendiculata, D. lignicola, D. neorostrata, D. obclavata, Hypoxylon lignicola, Lepteutypa aquatica, Myrmecridium aquaticum, Neospadicoides aquatica, N. lignicola, N. yunnanensis, Ophioceras submersum, Peroneutypa lignicola, Phaeoisaria filiformis, Pseudostanjehughesia lignicola, Rhodoveronaea aquatica, Seiridium aquaticum, Sporidesmiella aquatica, Sporidesmium lageniforme, S. lignicola, Tainosphaeria lunata, T. obclavata, Wongia aquatica, two new combinations, viz. Acrodictys aquatica, Cylindrotrichum aquaticum, and 9 new records, viz. Chaetomium globosum, Chaetosphaeria cubensis, Ch. myriocarpa, Cordana abramovii, Co. terrestris, Cuspidatispora xiphiago, Sporidesmiella hyalosperma, Stachybotrys chartarum,S. chlorohalonata. A comprehensive classification of the freshwater Sordariomycetes is presented based on updated literature. Phylogenetic inferences based on DNA sequence analyses of a combined LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF1α dataset comprising species of freshwater Sordariomycetes are provided. Detailed information including their habitats distribution, diversity, holotype, specimens collected and classification are provided.

A new anamorphic genus Veramycella, with V. bispora as the type species, is described and illustrated from rachides of dead leaves of Sabal palmetto in southeastern Florida, USA. The genus is characterized by having 3-distoseptate, polymorphic conidia produced in simple, acropetal chains of two, and polyblastic, terminal or intercalary, sympodially proliferating conidiogenous cells bearing widely spaced, flattened, non-protuberant, unthickened, not darkened conidiogenous loci, disposed in conidiophores with enteroblastic, percurrent regenerative proliferations. It is compared with morphologically similar anamorphic genera and species having sympodial conidiogenesis and catenate conidia. Thirteen other hyphomycetes are recorded for the first time for the continental United States. A new combination Rhexoacrodictys martinii, is proposed and discussed.

The current taxonomic condition and status of Acrodictys is reviewed and found to be unduly heterogeneous. Consideration is given to a number of taxa which are thought to be unsatisfactorily accommodated in this genus and the need for alternative classification thereof is discussed. Four species, A. globulosa, A. lamma, A. martinii, and A. obliqua, together with a newly-discovered entity, are placed in a novel, segregate genus, Junewangia. The Acrodictys generic concept is refined in a stricter sense, an emended description is provided, and its type species, A. bambusicola, and two other similar taxa, A. atroapicula and A. elaeidicola, are treated in order to more clearly define, delineate, and particularize the hallmark characteristics of the genus.
