INTRODUCTION:
Badminton is very popular among people of various ages and its popularity is still in increasing
trend. It is a fasts paced game. It requires quick direction changes and move lateral movement.
Apart from high level training the equipments mainly racket, clothing, shuttlecock and shoes
contribute to successful performance. Badminton shoes are the most important equipments as
much as important clothing, racket and shuttle for optimize performance. Wearing wrong type of
shoes could be dangerous for given full range of dynamic movement involve in Badminton.
Playing Badminton involves a great deal of twisting and turning at high speed and various
moving steps are composed of appel step, cross step, pedaling step, hop step, stride step and
other basic footwork and can be vigorous on knee and ankle joints. To prevent injury, and
optimize performance, it is important to wear a good pair of specific Badminton shoes. To
reduce the risk of injury and good grip, cushioning and also support ankles, it is important to
wear scientifically manufactured Badminton shoes for the better achievement.
Oprah Winfray said that “I still have my feet on the ground, I just wear better shoes.” Shoes are
considered the most important part of the Badminton outfit.
Purpose of the study: This study intends to analyze the specific shoes requirement for a
Badminton player in a scientific way.
History of shoes: In ancient days animal hide were used as a protective covering for the feet and
in the warm climate period the typical foot wear was sandal. Army has continued to use hub nail
boots in the modern times.
Machine began to introduce in the shoes manufacturing in the mid-19th century. In 1845
rolling machines was introduced and in 1860 there was a machine to cut role and uppers are
greatly improved by Charles Goodyear son of the inventor of vulcanized robber perfected the
method of stitching a well shoe. Both the Me Kay and Good year system are still in use. One of
the mechanization was introduced the shoes making process rapidly developed.
Selection of Good pair of Shoes:
The two main reasons behind the selection of good pair of shoes
I. It maximizes performance during the game.

II. It prevents injuries.
Problems of poorly fitted shoes:
Shoes that have poor fitted can cause problems of backaches sore muscles, fatigue, poor
posture and sprain in the ankle. Shoes that to tight may result corns, hammer toes and in groin
nail. Such problem can be avoided by taking special care when buying shoes especially in a
scientific way.
Necessity of proper shoes: To prevent injury and optimize performance, it is important to wear
a pair of scientific badminton shoes, playing Badminton involves a great deal of twisting and
turning, often at high speed and can be fairly vigorous on knee and ankle joints. To reduce the
risk of injury it is important to wear a pair of shoes with very good grip, cushioning and support
for ankle. It is also worth taking steps to increase the lifespan of badminton shoes. Once the
cushioning is lost from the shoes, its protection and effectiveness is less eased, and thus injuries
are more likely, firstly, try and only wear them for playing purposes or other indoor activities-
don‟t go for jogging by wearing badminton shoes. This will help grip, and stop slipping around
the court. The pair of shoes selected should be light weight, durable, comfortable, well fitting
and well constructed with smartly molded soles of rubber or high- grip, non-marking materials
only for Badminton playing. If we compare the past and the present shoes manufacturing in the
modern days are based on research and improved scientifically to a large extend.
Double Russell Mesh (Control moisture) this provide 8 times better air exchange as
compare to normal shoes so that moisture/ sweat does not accumulate around players feet and it
is also light weight and durable. The Double Russell Mesh avoid accumulation of sweat inside
the shoes, it will feel more comfortable during the badminton game. Besides, players will be able
to prevent blisters when there is no moisture inside the player‟s shoe.
The following guide lines must kept in mind to purchase for low arched, high arched,
curved and normal foot.
The players with low arches should look for a soled full counter, good pre foot and rear
foot stability, inside support to keep the foot from turning inward and the firm midsole. High
arched foot (Supinated) is not having a good shock observer and it requires maximum cushioning
flexibility and lateral support to prevent foot from turning outward.
Player with abducted foot need shoe with exaggerated influxes and that provide
maximum comfort and flexibility. Comfortable footwear included wearing of good socks. It is
important to buy a good quality socks that are specially designed for Badminton. Personally
discuss with some experts, Yonex shoes are simply last well and the padding in them make them
really comfortable, and actually much bouncier.Yonex shoes are designed for Badminton

players. Example: Yonex SHB 58, SHB 101, Yonex SHB 90 MX, SHB 180 LTD, and

Balance of the Shoes: A shoe that is properly balanced with its weight every distributed can
play lighter than fore foot or very foot heavy. We have to compromise on weight and balance to
get their specific feature.
Selection of Badminton Shoes: For this reason we should avoid buying regular running shoes or
trainers if play Badminton.
Some basic qualities of Badminton shoes are:
(i) Traction and Grip.
(ii) Good cushioning and
(iii) Lightweight
Common technologies in Badminton Shoes:
Common Shoes companies are manufacturing the shoes in scientific way. But selection
of shoes is important to everyone according to their need. Different players need different
technological features. Fit and comfort are the vital criteria for everyone. Ergo shape, power
cushion and Double Russell Mesh designed shoes are very helpful to the Badminton players for
showing the best performance in the game.
Ergo shape: (For Stability) provide comfort and stability at the forefoot area and toe flexibility
around the toe area is important for effective and organized Badminton footwork. It is help
players toes spring forward and backward. So, that‟s a suitable good pair of shoes is important.
Power cushion: (Acts as a shock absorber). This acts as a shock absorber and enables the wearer
to perform quick move back to the any party the court.
Conclusion:
From the above study, it has been concluded that the scientific selected badminton shoes caters
to the needs of every players to maintain thus game at high peak levels of performance. Most
technologically advance shoes are the secret of the best performance. It can undoubtedly state
that specific, proper fitting of shoes are essential to a lively and long lasting game.

In this study, we used biomechanics testing on the typical badminton movement to compare the shoe hardness effect on the body kinetics response. Six excellent badminton players participated in this test. Heels of ground reaction forces and landing time were collected through force-measuring system and video analysis system. Our results indicate that the peak ground reaction forces was less when wearing the badminton shoes with less hardness sole, but no statistically significant difference. Meanwhile, the heel landing time was less in the shoes with higher hardness sole. Badminton shoes are not only shall protect the foot joints and muscles in exercise or competition, but also possess the function to improve the athlete's reaction speed. © 2014, Journal of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Research. Conference Paper
The purpose of this study was to analyze kinematics characteristics the foot-leg completed in common front step of badminton by means of 3D image analysis, explore the impact of new badminton shoes on the front step action and the functional connection between leg-foot and badminton shoes, and provide suggestion for badminton shoes designing and developing as well as theoretical basis for the scientific training and sports injury prevention.
