Abstract

Hemigrammocapoeta menderesensis is distinguished from all other species of Hemigrammocapoeta in Anatolia by the following combination of characters (none unique to the species): lateral line incomplete; 6-17 perforated scales and 36- 41 +1-2 scales in lateral series; 71/2-81/2 scale rows between lateral line and dorsal-fin origin, 3-4 scale rows between lat-eral series and anal-fin origin; dorsal fin commonly with 71/2 branched rays; anal fin with 51/2 branched rays; 15-17 gill rakers on the first brachial arch; pharyngeal teeth 2.4.5-5.3.3; mouth small, subterminal, horseshoe shaped and without barbel; lips developed and somewhat fleshy; upper lip not covering nostril gape; lower lip with two lateral lobes and me-dian pad; lateral lobes smaller and shorter than half width of median pad; numerous papillae on lower and upper lips.

Abstract
Hemigrammocapoeta menderesensis is distinguished from all other species of Hemigrammocapoeta in Anatolia by the
following combination of characters (none unique to the species): lateral line incomplete; 6–17 perforated scales and 36–
41 +1–2 scales in lateral series; 7½–8½ scale rows between lateral line and dorsal-fin origin, 3–4 scale rows between lat-
eral series and anal-fin origin; dorsal fin commonly with 7½ branched rays; anal fin with 5½ branched rays; 1517 gill
rakers on the first brachial arch; pharyngeal teeth 2.4.5–5.3.3; mouth small, subterminal, horseshoe shaped and without
barbel; lips developed and somewhat fleshy; upper lip not covering nostril gape; lower lip with two lateral lobes and me-
dian pad; lateral lobes smaller and shorter than half width of median pad; numerous papillae on lower and upper lips.

Introduction
Hemigrammocapoeta Pellegrin, 1927 is a genus differentiated by the shape of its mouth and incomplete lateral
line. Pellegrin (1928) obtained samples of the type species Hemigrammocapoeta culiciphaga from Dr. E. Tok
(Adana) and was able to discriminate two species in the genus using the presence or absence of barbels and the
number of lateral line scales. H. culiciphaga has a pair barbels at the corner of the mouth and 29-32 scales at the
lateral series while H. kemali (Hanko, 1925) has no barbels and 37-40 scales in the lateral series. Kosswig (1950)
considered Neotylognathus a new subgenus of Tylognathus Heckel, 1843 from Asia Minor, and reported that H.
caudomaculata (Battalgil, 1942) (Lake Amik near Hatay and Ceyhan River), Tylognathus klatti Kosswig, 1950
(Lake Eğirdir and Lake Gölcük near Isparta and Lake Işıklı) and H. kemali (only Akgöl near Ereğli) belong to the
new subgenus (Kosswig, 1950: 407-412). Later, Karaman (1971) considered Neotylognathus a subgenus of
Hemigrammocapoeta (1971: 236-239) and included H. nasus culiciphaga (Adana, Lake Amik and Ceyhan River),
H. (Neotylognathus) kemali (Akgöl, Ereğli) and H. (Neotylognathus) klatti (Lakes Eğirdir, Lake Beyşehir and
possibly Lake Gölcük near Isparta).
Records by some authors indicate discrepancies about the distribution of these species. According to Bostancı
(2006) and Van Neer et al. (2008) for instance, H. culiciphaga is distributed in Seyhan, Ceyhan and Asi rivers. On
the other hand, Erk’akan and Özdemir (2011) mentioned the presence of H. caudomaculata in parts of Seyhan and
Ceyhan drainage systems. Lakes Eğirdir and Gölcük populations of H. kemali, referred to in some recent sources as
Crossocheilus klatti (Fricke et al. 2007), went extinct from these lakes due to the introduced piscivore Sander
lucioperca (Küçük et al. 2009).

Garra kemali is reported for the first time from the Black Sea Basin (Hirfanlı reservoir at the Kızılırmak River). The Hirfanlı population is distinguished from the Eregli population, from where G. kemali was described, by seventeen nucleotide substitutions in the partial mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (1041 bp). Due to the limited knowledge about the genetic variability in G. kemali, which is widespread in Central Anatolia, and the poorly studied fish fauna of the Kızılırmak River drainage, it cannot be decided, if the Hirfanlı population is native or translocated.

1. This study presents the occurrence, length-weight relationship and morphometry for Hemigrammocapoeta culiciphaga from Seyhan River Estuary (Baharlı village, Tarsus-Mersin), southern Turkey. 2. In December 2014, 16 specimens of H. culiciphaga were collected in high salinity zone of Seyhan River Estuary by shore-seine netting. 3. The samples were observed at the station where salinity measured 29.5 ppt at the bottom. 4. Specimens of H. culiciphaga ranged from 4.3 to 6 cm in total length and from 0.96 to 3.04 g in total weight. 5. This study reports the first length-weight relationship for H. culiciphaga. For all individuals, the length–weight relationship was W= 0.0049L 3.558 with a determination coefficient R 2 =0.911. ÖZ 1. Bu çalışmada Hemigrammocapoeta culiciphaga'nın Seyhan Nehri Östarini'ndeki (Baharlı Köyü, Tarsus-Mersin) bulunurluğu bildirilmiş ve boy-ağırlık ilişkisi ile mor-fometrik özellikleri rapor edilmiştir. 2. Aralık 2014 tarihinde Seyhan Nehri Östarini'nin yüksek salinite zonunda yapılan kıyı ığrıbı örneklemlerinde H. culiciphaga'ya ait 16 birey elde edilmiştir. 3. Garra roseae, new species, is described from the stream Tang-e-Sarhe in the Iranian Makran region. It is distinguished from its congeners in the Middle East by lacking barbels, having a small mental disc, 42–58 total scales along the lateral line, 24–30 scales along the predorsal midline, and 20–24 circumpeduncular scales. It is further characterised by having five diagnostic nucleotide substitutions and a minimum K2P distance of 5.39% to G. rossica and 5.49% to G. nudiventris in the mtDNA COI barcode region. Garra phryne from eastern Iran is considered to be a synonym of G. nudiventris.

Garra rezai, new species, is described from the Chooman, a tributary of the Lesser Zab in Iran, and from headwaters of the Yanarsu, a tributary of the upper Tigris in Turkey. It is distinguished from its congeners in the Garra variabilis species group by having two pairs of barbels, a well-developed mental disc, 35-40 total scales along the lateral line, 15-19 scales along the predorsal midline, and 15-18 circumpeduncular scales. It is further characterised by having ten diagnostic nucleotide substitutions and the K2P genetic distances with the closest species i.e. G. klatti, G. kemali and G. variabilis as 11.9, 12.0, and 13.7%, respectively in the mtDNA COI barcode region.

Northeast Anatolia is rich in a variety of ecosystems, habitats, and unique vascular plant diversity. A remarkable number of vascular plants have been used for several purposes such as food, medicine, etc. by the local people. This region is characterized by dune, riparian, wetland, pseudomacchie, forest (both deciduous and conifer) and subalpine-alpine vegetation types of which the last one is the richest zone in terms of both plant diversity and medicinal plants. This chapter provides scientific information about both native and non-native vascular medicinal plants and their uses, parts used and local names depending on literature and field observations available in this region of Turkey. Ceratogarra is established as genus name for Garra cambodgiensis and G. fasciacauda. Besides molecular characters, Ceratogarra shares with Paracrossochilus the presence of a large tubercle on each side of the tip of the snout, the colour pattern made of a bold black midlateral stripe and a red to black marginal or submarginal stripe along the upper and lower margins of the caudal fin. It is distinguished from Paracrossochilus by the presence of a gular disc. The oral and gular morphology of Paracrossochilus is described. The difference between lower lip and labial fold is discussed. The terminology used to describe the gular disc is reviewed and a new terminology is proposed. Conclusions of recent works on garra lineages are discussed, among others the homology of soft oral and gular structures and the reduction and absence (vs. loss) of the gular disc. While the absence or small size of the disc might result from loss or reduction in some species or lineages, there is no reason to accept a hypothesis that the presence of a structure as complex as the gular disc would be the plesiomorphic condition for the whole clade 'Labeonini minus Labeonina', followed by loss of the disc and followed by the evolution of new, different, very complex structures. It is at least equally parsimonious (and more logical) to hypothesise a simple structure as plesiomorphic, followed by the evolution (including parallel) of various complex modifications of the gular tissues, including discs (which develop in different ways). The putative homology between the disc of garras in separate lineages should be critically reexamined and genera within Garrina should be diagnosed by other characters than simply by a trivial statement of the presence or absence of the disc. The gross oversimplification (or misrepresentation) of 'morphology', and even its terminology, is a serious problem in many molecular phylo-genetic studies.

Garra orontesi, new species, is described from the Orontes River drainage in the eastern Mediterranean Sea basin in Turkey and Syria. It is distinguished from its congeners in the Mediterranean Sea basin and adjacent Mesopotamia by possessing 17-21 gill rakers on the lower part of the first gill arch, the pelvic-fin origin usually below the second branched dorsal-fin ray, 8½ branched dorsal-fin rays, usually 2-3 scales between the tip of the pectoral and pelvic-fin origins, and no tubercles behind the upper posterior eye margin. It is also distinguished by a minimum K2P distance of 2.7% in its COI barcode region against G. rufa, and 3.9% against the geographically adjacent G. turcica.

The present lists show that Turkish vertebrate fauna consists of 1728 species. Fish species form its half part (51.74%) with 530 marine and 402 inland fish species. However, the total number is 894, since 38 of them are living in salty, brackish, and freshwater. At the class level, Petromyzonti is represented by 4, Elasmobranchii by 65, Holocephali by 1, Actinopteri by 824, Amphibia by 36, Reptilia by 140, Aves by 485, and Mammalia by 173 species. A total number of 189 inland fish—1 Petromyzonti and 188 Actinopteri—13 amphibian, 20 reptile, and 5 mammal species are endemic to Turkey. The endemism rate out of the total vertebrate species is 13.14%. According to the given conservation status, at least five species are extinct, and 215 species are globally threatened.

The ichthyofaunal changes in Lake Eǧirdir between 1915 and 2007 were reviewed. It was understood that the most drastic change in the ichthyofauna of Lake Eǧirdir occurred in 1955 with the introduction of pike-perch (Sander lucioperca), and that the process of change continued with the addition of Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) in 1996 and big scale sand smelt (Atherina boyeri) in 2003. Today, there are 15 fish taxa (10 native, 5 non-native) in Lake Eǧirdir. It was determined that, among the endemic species of Lake Eǧirdir, Handlirsch's minnow (Pseudophoxinus handlirschi) is extinct (EX), Ereǧli minnow (Hemigrammocapoeta kemali) disappeared, and Eǧirdir minnow (Pseudophoxinus egridiri) and Eǧirdir barb (Capoeta pestai) are critically endangered (CR).
