Search Vs Hunt in Websites: An HCI Issue

The graphical user interface (GUI) involving icons, and point and click was a great invention; so is access to a webpage through the use of a multi-word search string. Like a screwdriver and a hammer, they are complementary. One does not replace the other. Website designers have to consider providing access to their webpages using multi-word search strings. Search through a complex website using drop-down menus and point-and-click is not a satisfactory substitute.

GUI design based on cognitive psychology: Theoretical, empirical and practical approaches

This paper presents a study on the effectiveness of applying cognitive psychology in designing the graphical user interface (GUI). The study focuses on three main aspects of cognitive psychology which are the human memory limitation, perception, and attention. Survey had also been conducted to find out the user preferences in GUI. Preliminary evaluation suggests that the cognitive psychology theories presented in this study were considers as an important aspect when designing an effective GUI.

Prefab: What if Every GUI were Open-Source?

Current methods for implementing graphical user interfaces create fundamental challenges for HCI research and practice. Researchers are often unable to demonstrate or evaluate new techniques beyond small toy applications, and practitioners are often unable to adopt methods from the literature in new and existing applications. This position statement examines a vision in which anybody can modify ... [Show full abstract] any GUI of any application, similar to a scenario where every GUI of every application is open-source. We are currently working to enable this vision through our development of Prefab, using pixel-based interpretation of GUIs to enable modification of those GUIs without any cooperation from the underlying application. We see participation in the FLOSS HCI workshop as valuable in at least two regards. First, fully realizing this vision will likely require a community-based approach, so we are interested in Prefab as a platform for collaboration between HCI researchers and the FLOSS community. Second, enabling arbitrary modification of any GUI would seem to blur many current distinctions between open and closed applications, introducing new research questions and further magnifying the importance of the workshop's focus.
