Abstract

In this research, we develop a supporting system for nature observation and investigation activities around users using smartphones. By using smartphones equipped with GPS and a camera for nature observation, users can record the target pictures and position information to observe. Users can share many data by uploading these records with the others. Moreover, it is useful to data map creation of observation information by performing continuous use. We are developing the system which users enable to learn about natural environment by observation and investigation activities of dragonflies, being familiar with the nature around users using smartphones equipped with GPS. Since dragonflies are one of the index insects of waterside environment, users enable to learn about natural environment through observation and investigation activities of dragonflies. We aim at visualization of changes of natural environment by performing natural observational-research activities using this system.

In this workshop we are interested in usability, context and user practices related to uses of social mobile media for sharing human experiences. There is a growing trend pointing to life publishing and life logging using mobile devices. Users are sharing their experiences and their life with friends in real-time by posting blog notes, images and video clips from their phones to social media services. In addition, people are tagging content either by manually or using sensory data with their phones. An interesting question to be asked is; How users are experiencing these applications and what issues make them to be successfully adopted? This workshop will offer an interdisciplinary discussion forum for both practitioners and academics interested in conceptualizing, designing and evaluating emerging social mobile media concepts and applications. The workshop, through a series of interactive presentations, will facilitate discussions aiming at identify and summarize main theoretical and interaction design concerns related to the increasing use of social mobile media in a variety of settings. The main goal of the workshop is to find out ideas that suggest promising directions for future research on social mobile media.

We developed a system for creating geo-tagged observational picture maps that makes use of a GPS logger that is equipped with a database of flowers that can be used for the identification of these flowers. This database includes 961 color photographs of 220 varieties of flowers that are commonly found in Japan. The system has the following functionalities: the ability to search and identify flowers by season, color, and name; the ability to view high-resolution video clips showing scenes that are difficult to observe, such as the dispersal of seeds; detailed explanations on the method of identifying similar flowers that are hard to distinguish; and the ability to assist in the creation of an observational picture map by automatically showing photographs together with observational comments on a Google Maps based on GPS signal data. The system was trialed with 208 sophomore university students as part of a fieldwork involving the observation of wild flowers. As a result of the trial, the effectiveness of the system was validated in the following four domains: (1) interest, motivation, and attitude; (2) thinking and decision making; (3) technique and expression; and (4) knowledge and understanding.
