Cartoon Dynamics and Its Impact on the Middle Class Children: An Analysis on the Perception of Parents and Children in Dhaka City

Cartoon is the medium of entertainment for children that affects children in different ways and created a considerable debate in the age of globalization in Bangladesh. The research has explored the nature of cartoon broadcasted by different satellite channels and how children are being socialized in the middle class families in order to examine the impacts of cartoons on children in Dhaka. This is an empirical study conducted applying qualitative method and data were collected through in-depth interview and participatory observation in middle class families in the capital city of Bangladesh. The nature of cartoons are diversified such as fantasy, fiction, magical, sci-fi, mythological, funny, fairy tale, action, horror, detective, martial art, prince-princess, adventurous, puppets, Japanese, Indian, English and Bengali which have cognitive, behavioral, psychological, social, mental, physical and cultural impacts on the middle class children. As a result, middle class children become cartoonized rather being socialized that causes the development of their cartoonholic self.

Redesigning downtown: the fabrication of German-themed villages in small-town America

Although neither community had a Germanic ethnic base, both sought economic and physical rebirth by remodeling their town cores in an "alpine" or "Bavarian" style. My research indicates that these efforts to ... [Show full abstract] "create culture" betray the same fundamental instinct pioneered in a series of world's fairs and in Disney's theme parks. They also share a living history element with Colonial Williamsburg, another American community that has a fabricated cultural and historical identity. This study argues that Helen and Leavenworth's revitalization movements are related to a rising preservation movement in the United States, and proposes that they constitute important variants of the national trend to capitalize on tourism as other forms of economic revenue declined.Close analysis of the circumstances and the architectural design processes behind the civic transformations (including extensive archival research and interviews with the surviving protagonists) suggests that the choice of a Germanic theme was a direct result of American military presence in post World War II Germany. The principal community designers for both Helen and Leavenworth were stationed in post-war Germany, and both sought to recreate a vision of the appealing Alpine and late-medieval landscapes they had encountered overseas. Back at home, their positive and romantic vision of Germanic culture was promoted by America's growing travel and entertainment industry. Books of Germanic fairy tales featured illustrations of half-timbered chalets, while Disney used similar elements in cartoons like Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, which promoted a connection in the American psyche between German architecture and childhood fantasy. America's extensive Germanic heritage, combined with its central role in the reconstruction of post-war Germany, made it particularly receptive to the idealized "Germanic" environments created at Helen and Leavenworth, which continue to inspire similar communities. Finally, this thesis explores the challenges and successes of these communities' strategies over time, investigating how they may provide helpful case studies within a broader investigation of the problem of "created culture."

A Study on Emotional Healing Efficacy of Fiction for Undergraduate

[Show full abstract] this is the application of bibliotherapy. among various resources, fiction can serve as an appropriate emotional reading material. the researcher deployed semi-structured in-depth interview, and interviewed 21 undergraduates in taipei city and taipei county. this study is aimed to understand the kinds of fictions undergraduates read when they are upset and to analyze the emotional healing process of identification, catharsis, and insight so that the emotional healing efficacy can be evaluated. the findings showed that romance, realistic fiction, fantasy, martial arts novel, inspirational fiction, historical fiction, and science fiction can provide full process of emotional healing efficacy. however, detective fiction, online novel, psychological fiction, and horror fiction can only provide parts of the healing process. besides, the healing efficacy of a specific fiction is different from reader to reader.

The Arabian Nights in British Romantic Children's Literature

Children’s literature emerged as a new genre in the eighteenth century. In order to break away from the unrealistic and non-educational fiction available and attractive to children, writers began to create rational tales. [Show full abstract] rational stories of children learning moral lessons without the imaginative elements associated with the potentially detrimental genre of fairy tales. The children’s book market was popular with the middle class who had money and a desire to acquire status symbols, even for their children. Antoine Galland’s publication of Les Mille et Une Nuits in 1704 introduced Europe to the Arabian Nights. English versions of the Nights circulated immediately, primarily in chapbook form; however, self-proclaimed translations appeared later in the century, such as Richard Johnson’s The Oriental Moralist (1790). Alan Richardson in his book, Literature, Education, and Romanticism: Reading as Social Practice, 1780-1832, outlines the methods used by rational tale writers to incorporate fantastic elements into their stories. Writers exploited the appeal of imaginative literature by utilizing the plot structures, settings, and themes to enhance their moral fiction. As the rational tale trend took control of the book market, the Nights became a text to use for didactic means. Writers revised and rewrote elements of the Nights tales to be appropriate for a young audience. The rational tales produced in the eighteenth century reflect the consumer presence of the middle class. The Nights tales, tales of merchants and traders, offered an ideal foundation for middle class ideals, such as industry, virtue, and social mobility. In this thesis, I demonstrate the presence of the Arabian Nights in the children’s literature of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. In addition, I examine the link between middle class values and the Nights in my selected readings. My primary sources for information on children’s literature of the eighteenth century include Alan Richardson, M.O. Grenby’s article “Tame Fairies Make Good Teachers: The Popularity of Early British Fairy Tales,” and Geoffrey Summerfield’s book Fantasy and Reason: Children’s Literature in the Eighteenth Century. The children’s texts I discuss in this thesis include “Princess Hebe” (1749) from Sarah Fielding’s The Governess; The Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor (1805); a self-proclaimed translation by Richard Johnson, The Oriental Moralist (1790); “Traveller’s Wonders” and “The Travelled Ant” (1794-8) from John Aikin and Anna Laetitia Barbauld’s Evenings at Home; “Murad the Unlucky” (1804) from Maria Edgeworth’s Popular Tales; The History of Abou Casem (1825); “The Sea-Voyage” and “The Young Mahometan” (1809) from Charles and Mary Lamb’s Mrs. Leicester’s School.

Dramatic Revisions of Myths, Fairy Tales and Legends is an admirably wide-ranging survey of the ways in which contemporary dramatic literature appropriates, contests, and transforms pre-existing mythic and fantastical narratives. Verna A. Foster's introduction makes a strong case for the volume's chosen terminology and self-consciously diverse range of subject matter. Dramatic "revision," Foster ... [Show full abstract] contends, does not (unlike more conventional terms, including "adaptation" and "translation") presuppose the existence of an identifiable, literary source-text (2-3) and thus opens the way for an expansive and inclusive range of narratives— incorporating "various kinds of retellings of myth, fairy tale, and legend" (3)—to be considered alongside one another. The resulting breadth of critical focus aims to develop new insights into the contemporary use of "old stories for new cultural purposes" (12), traversing genre- and subject-boundaries to explore a varied collection of modern playwrights, their different creative practices, and their distinctive "dramatic revisions" of myth, fairy tale, or legend (12). The book's first four chapters offer new perspectives on relatively familiar territory, as they examine the contemporary adaptation and dramatic revision of ancient Greek myth. Miriam Chirico develops a structuralist analysis of the "mythic revisionary drama" (15) of Karen Hartman, Sarah Ruhl, and Caridad Svich, highlighting the diversity of revisionary strategies and styles being deployed in three key works. Karelisa Hartigan discusses the challenges posed to Aristotelian definitions of tragedy by modern dramatic revisions and, in particular, their intense focus on individual experience. Elizabeth W. Scharffenberger explores the ways in which contemporary playwriting and performance can radically "unmake" myth (52), inviting modern audiences "to reflect on their own participation in, and vulnerability to, the phenomenon of mythopoesis" (53), in the process rendering the received mythologies of Helen and Jocasta "metamythopoetic" (63). Finally, Jeffrey B. Loomis identifies a complex network of connections between the Homeric "Hymn to Demeter" and "the affirmation of a vital, dynamic, life-heralding spirituality" (76) in the seriocomic dramas of Tina Howe. There is plenty to stimulate and provoke in these essays, but what is particularly valuable about this volume is the juxtaposition and interaction of these analyses with later chapters drawing on a more diverse range of source materials, which invite a broader exploration of the role of dramatic revision in contemporary theatrical writing and performance. Kevin J. Wetmore, Jr.'s exploration of the transformation and reception of West African myth on American stages highlights the role of revisionary drama in creating and representing "complex and fluid" diaspora identities (93). Similar themes also emerge in Christy Stanlake's study of the multiple mythologies uneasily co-inhabiting Tomson Highway's Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing and the ways in which this complex drama might ultimately function as "a bravely wrought ceremonial action" designed to aid a fractured Native American community's attempts at self-healing (110). Amelia Howe Kritzer argues that Caryl Churchill's use of mythic figures and themes in The Skriker deliberately pushes the play beyond the personal and the everyday in order to make visible "the psychological, social, and economic burden carried by young people" and address the wider issues of "social breakdown" and "natural catastrophe" (122). Sharon Friedman contributes a fascinating survey of multiple revisions of the "dybbuk" in modern theater and the ways in which this Jewish folkloric figure has been used to engage contentious issues of gender, identity, and sexual desire, additionally stressing "the performative aspect of storytelling" (140) as a key factor in myth-inspired drama's ability to restore the unpredictable, flexible qualities of traditional narratives. Anthony Ellis comparably addresses the relationship between staged fairy-tale narratives and their contemporary audiences, examining Martin McDonagh's The Pillowman and the play's unsettling depiction of "the struggle for the control of representation" (156) between the creative artist and the state. And the fairy tale's potential to dramatize and contest contemporary social mores is central to Sheila Rabillard's account of Grasses of a Thousand Colors, its appropriation of tropes and themes from "The White Cat," and Wallace Shawn's knowing redeployment of "the transformations which fairy tales undergo" (162) in the creation of a dislocating, dystopic fantasy of sexual predation and ecological disaster.
