When Work Becomes Meditation: A Case Study of How Managers Use Work as a Tool for Personal Growth

Abstract

This paper introduces an empirically grounded process model for how managers can allow work to become meditation in order to further personal growth in mid-­‐‑ life. When managers actively engage with the challenging situations of everyday work with a meditative attitude, the process unfolds as the managers' focus shift from attending to suffering, to witnessing what is, and to responding with authenticity. The model is based on the qualitative analysis of data gathered during a two-­‐‑ year, in depth longitudinal clinical study of how seven CEO's and business owners of small and medium-­‐‑ sized companies integrate their spiritual development insights with their working lives. Past literature suggests that traditional meditation practice provides people with a foundation for personal growth by increasing their capacity to explore their situation through a different light and change their perspective of life. This study shows that work can provide the individual with an environment where this capacity can be practiced and embodied in real-­‐‑ time in order to further personal growth. Consequently, if work is allowed to become a meditation, it can be a prime enabler of personal growth. Observations from the longitudinal study also indicate that a meditative approach to work can over time potentially lead to a more viable way of doing business.

Peter attended a prestigious business school in his twenties and has been CEO in various start-ups. Currently, he is a twenty percent owner and the CEO of a small and rapidly growing
company that imports and sells equipment for swimming pools. After having experienced a burnout, Peter saw meditation and personal development as a means to balance his life. Recently,
Peter also suffered from and recovered from cancer. This gave him a profound insight into how important it is for him to balance his strive for achievements with his well-being.
Marie has worked successfully with PR in the music industry for more than twenty years and has run her own company for the past 10 years. Previously, she worked hard to grow the
company and develop the business. After facing a burnout, growth is no longer her only goal; rather, it is to have freedom in life while also working with her passion. In this journey she is
challenged by her old patterns of meeting and exceeding customers’ expectations.
John took over his fathers ventilation company with 5 employees in the year 2000. Since then, he grew the business slowly and steadily in the small town together with a co-owner. After
having conformed to the norm with a wife, two kids, and a beautiful house, a feeling of having lost the spirit of life brought him onto the path of personal development. While looking for a
meaningful way to run the business, he finds himself challenged by his own history of finding things difficult to change together with the attitude “this is the way things are done here”.
Cecilia took over her fathers cleaning company together with her brother and transformed it into the largest family-owned cleaning company in Sweden. After successfully selling the
company to a venture capitalist, she started to look for other business opportunities. A divorce and struggles in the earlier years of life to get herself on the path of personal development, and
now, she is trying to find balance between her drive to create a business with her desire to be with her family as well as taking care of herself.
Sara is a trained nurse who now runs a cleaning and home-care company. When her mother suddenly passed away, she became the CEO and co-owner of the company together with her
brother. Sara has always been very emotional, making her a very enthusiastic, intuitive, and inspirational CEO. However, these emotions can easily turn into anger, grief, and deep

Cognitive-behavioral, spiritual, and integral approaches to management each describe a leader’s way of being as a matter of congruence between presence and purpose. This article introduces Ways of Being Theory (WBT), which bridges these approaches by comparatively analyzing assumptions and empirical observations. WBT defines presence as an individual’s dispositional level of awareness and purpose as the typical level of meaning they assign to work. By connecting these tensions, WBT reveals four different ways of being that have critical implications for leaders and organizations facing unprecedented challenges in the wake of COVID. This article also presents findings from a preliminary study on psychometric and comparative characteristics of a Way of Being Inventory (WBI), which partially supports a two-factor structure.

Recent literature and statistics have shown that modern technological distractions excessively penetrate daily life. Although theories of cognitive control have stated that humans’ inherently have control over distractions, there has been empirical evidence that technological interferences are associated with social, economic and health problems. The present study was the first that examined the impact of technological distractions on self-actualization by focusing on two research questions: “Does tech-related distraction affect self-actualization?” and “Does mobile phone distraction affect self-actualization?”. An online survey collected data of 165 adult anonymously, who rated themselves on two measures for technological distraction (general tech-related distraction, mobile phone interference in life) and one measure of selfactualization, as well as two associated subdimensions of self-actualization (mindfulness, personal growth). Results revealed that higher levels of technological distractions were associated with lower levels of mindfulness but didn’t affect participants’ self-actualization and personal growth. On basis of motivated cognition model, results supported the claim that self-actualization and personal growth represent higher personal motivations, which might positively affect volitional control over technological distractions. Research results provide knowledge for a new field of study and could be practically used for mentoring or counselling purposes, emphasizing that despite the common notion, modern technologies don’t interfere with humans’ personal development capabilities and ultimate self, while also stressing the importance for self-enhancing volitional control. Directions for future research were discussed.

This article discusses how recent developments in the cognitive sciences, especialy the concept of schemata (organizing frameworks for understanding events), can illumine the practice of organization development. On the basis of a cognitive perspective, the authors discuss the relationship between organizational change and schemata, describing the following orders of change that might result from OD: first-order change, or incremental changes occurring within particular schemata already shared by members of a client system, second-order change, or modifications in the shared schemata themselves; and third-order change, or the development of the capacity of the client system to change the schemata as events require. To show how understanding the differences among orders of change can help clarify problems and solutions from an intervention, the authors discuss how a paternalism schema affected a particular quality of working life intervention. They conclude by suggesting implications of the cognitive perspective for OD practice and research

Despite mounting reports about the negative effects of chronic occupational stress on cognitive and emotional functions, the underlying mechanisms are unknown. Recent findings from structural MRI raise the question whether this condition could be associated with a functional uncoupling of the limbic networks and an impaired modulation of emotional stress. To address this, 40 subjects suffering from burnout symptoms attributed to chronic occupational stress and 70 controls were investigated using resting state functional MRI. The participants' ability to up- regulate, down-regulate, and maintain emotion was evaluated by recording their acoustic startle response while viewing neutral and negatively loaded images. Functional connectivity was calculated from amygdala seed regions, using explorative linear correlation analysis. Stressed subjects were less capable of down-regulating negative emotion, but had normal acoustic startle responses when asked to up-regulate or maintain emotion and when no regulation was required. The functional connectivity between the amygdala and the anterior cingulate cortex correlated with the ability to down-regulate negative emotion. This connectivity was significantly weaker in the burnout group, as was the amygdala connectivity with the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the motor cortex, whereas connectivity from the amygdala to the cerebellum and the insular cortex were stronger. In subjects suffering from chronic occupational stress, the functional couplings within the emotion- and stress-processing limbic networks seem to be altered, and associated with a reduced ability to down-regulate the response to emotional stress, providing a biological substrate for a further facilitation of the stress condition.

Recent scholarship on mindfulness has narrowly focused on attention enhancement, present-moment awareness, and its stress reduction effects. Moreover, current operational definitions of mindfulness in the literature differ considerably from those derived from classic Buddhist canonical sources. This article revisits the meaning, function, and purpose of Buddhist mindfulness by proposing a triadic model of “right mindfulness.” A Buddhist-based conceptualization of right mindfulness provides both a theoretical and ethical corrective to the decontextualized individual-level construct of mindfulness that has informed the organizational theory and practitioner literature. We argue that a denatured mindfulness divorced from its soteriological context reduces it to a self-help technique that is easily misappropriated for reproducing corporate and institutional power, employee pacification, and maintenance of toxic organizational cultures.

Mindfulness transforms suffering through changes in what the mind is processing, changes in how the mind is processing it, and changes in the view of what is being processed. The ‘bearing in mind’ aspect of mindfulness is important in understanding these changes, and is discussed in terms of working memory. The Interacting Cognitive Subsystems perspective recognizes two kinds of meaning, one explicit and specific, the other implicit and holistic. We suggest that mindfulness is a configuration of mind in which working memory for holistic implicit meanings plays a central role. It is here that the processing and view of experience are transformed by the creation of new patterns of implicit meaning. This analysis is applied to mindfulness practice, mindfulness as a way of being, the training of instructors and the use of mindfulness with respect to different aspirations.
