Optimal or Ideal Class Size for the First-Year Seminar
Abstract
By definition, a “seminar” is a teaching-learning experience that takes place in an intimate group setting and is characterized by an active exchange of ideas among its participants. To be true to its name, class size for the first-year seminar should be kept as small as possible. This manuscript offers conceptual and empirical arguments for class size of first-year seminars that would maximize course impact on student learning and retention.
