ABSTRACT Description of a new species of Asida Latreille, 1802 subgenus Planasida Escalera, 1907 from North Africa (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae) In this paper we describe a new species of Asida of the subgenus Planasida: Asida (Planasida) septemsis, localized in the Spanish territory of Ceuta and distributed from the neighbouring areas of the Morocco's northern tip (north-eastern part of the Peninsula Tin-gitana). The new species is part of the group of Asida (Planasida) bereai, species of which are characterized by the epipleural edge of the elytra being smooth and fine (not crenulated),
... Asida Latreille, 1802 is one of the most diverse darkling beetle genera in the Palaearctic area, with 145 known species, most occurring in the Iberian Peninsula, France, Italy, and the Maghreb (Aliquò and Soldati 2014, Pérez-Vera and Avila 2012, Soldati 2008, 2009). The genus is remarkably diverse in the Western Mediterranean countries, especially on mountains and major islands, with many endemic species and subspecies. ...

Asida groehni sp. nov. (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae, Asidini) is described from Eocene Baltic amber from the Kaliningrad Region (Russia). This is the first fossil species belonging to the genus Asida Latreille, 1802 and only the eighth described darkling beetle species from Eocene Baltic amber. This species helps support the hypothesis that the climate in this part of Europe was warmer during Eocene, as no Asida species are currently present in the Baltic area due to not appropriate climate. This new fossil species is similar to modern Asida species in the subgenus Planasida Escalera, 1907, which occur in the Iberian Peninsula and the Maghreb, but it differs from all known Asida in pronotal sculpturing and pilosity, and by its yellow brown shiny cuticle, well visible on the pronotal disc. Despite species-level differences, the new extinct species appears to fit easily within the extant genus Asida.

... The genus Asida Latreille, 1802 is one of the most species rich darkling beetle genera in the Palearctic region, with ~145 currently valid species. Species diversity is highest on the Iberian Peninsula, France, Italy and the Northwest African region known as the Maghreb (Aliquò & Soldati 2014, Pérez-Vera & Avila 2012, Soldati 2008, 2009. Asida kaminskii sp. nov. (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae) is described from the mountains of Northeastern Corsica. This new orophilous species is compared to its most relative Asida carinata Solier, 1836 and secondary to A. christinae F. Soldati & Leo, 2005.
... Similarly to the closely related genus Asida Latreille, 1802, Alphasida needs to be entirely revised (Soldati 2009). The Moroccan species have been recently studied by Pérez- Vera & Avila (2012). ...

Alphasida (Glabrasida) bounaceurensis sp. nov. is described from the Jbel Bou Naceur top, the most eastern summit of the Moroccan Middle Atlas range. It is compared to other morphologically and geographically related species. Type material of Alphasida (Glabrasida) lecerfi Koch, 1940 and its subspecies is studied. A lectotype is designated for Alphasida (Glabrasida) iblanensis Antoine, 1939. We propose here a new synonymy: Alphasida (Glabrasida) iblanensis Antoine, 1939 = Alphasida (Glabrasida) lecerfi ighrezranensis Koch, 1940.
... The genus Alphasida Escalera, 1905 comprises 258 species and subspecies in the Palaearctic (Soldati 2008), most of these occur in Spain and Morocco where endemism is very important. As with the related genus Asida Latreille, 1802, Alphasida needs to be revised (Soldati 2009). The Moroccan species have been recently studied by Pérez-Vera & Avila (2012), the last work being a very complete starting point for future revisions of all phyletic groups in this country. ...

The little known species Alphasida (Glabrasida) nitida Bedel, 1918, described from eastern Morocco based on the unique type specimen, is rediscovered by numerous specimens from the type locality. The peculiar ecology of this species is indicated. Its systematic position in the subgenus Glabrasida Escalera, 1910 within the genus Alphasida Escalera, 1905 is confirmed. A redescription of this species based on both sexes is given and a neotype is designated.

... Particularly impressive is the cladogenesis of the tribe Asidiini (with the genera Asida and Alphasida ) in the western Mediterranean, notably on the Iberian Peninsula. Species within the genera Asida and Alphasida are very close to each other, but morphologically well distinguishable and endemic to small areas (Soldati andLeo 2005, Soldati 2009), which suggests that they emerged during but not after the Pleistocene (cf. Palmer 2002 for a case study). ...

Species specific colonization abilities and biotic and abiotic filters influence the local and regional faunal composition along colonization trajectories. Using a recent compilation of the occurrences of 1373 darkling beetle (Tenebrionidae) species and subspecies in 49 European countries and major islands, we reconstructed the tenebrionid postglacial colonization of middle and northern Europe from southern European glacial refuges and linked species composition to latitudinal and longitudinal gradients in phylogenetic relatedness across Europe. The majority of European islands and mainland countries appeared to be phylogenetically clustered. We did not find significant latitudinal trends in average phylogenetic relatedness of regional faunas along the supposed postglacial colonization routes but detected a strong positive correlation between mean relatedness and longitude of mainland faunas and an opposite negative correlation for island faunas. The strength of phylogenetic relatedness in the regional tenebrionid faunas decreased significantly with latitude and to a lesser degree with longitude. These findings are in accordance with two trajectories of postglacial colonization from centres in Spain and middle Asia that caused a strong longitudinal trend in the phylogenetic relatedness. Subsequent pair-wise analyses of species co-occurrences showed that species of similar distributional ranges tend to be phylogenetically clustered and species of different spatial distribution to be phylogenetically segregated. Both findings are in accordance with the concept of ‘range size heritability’. Our study demonstrates that taxonomic data are sufficiently powerful to infer continental wide patterns in phylogenetic relatedness that can be linked to colonization history and geographic information.
