Abstract

Infographics is a combination of the words “information” and “graphics” used to combine the data into a design. It could help to facilitate individuals or organizations in spreading information to the audience concisely. It is known that the misuse of visual communication can affect the concept of communication that was aimed to be presented by using images. Weak design and unstructured images failed to convey ideas and information and the lack of knowledge about visual communication could hinder learners to accurately interpret images. Hence, this study examines the use of infographics as a tool for facilitating learning among graphic design and digital media learners in UiTM Melaka. Ninety-nine learners with similar demographic background have been selected using simple random sampling method. The data collection was via quantitative methodology and descriptive statistics with a set of questionnaire as the main instrument which has undergone content validity and reliability testing. A pilot study was conducted with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.884. The findings suggested that the difficult learning problems encountered by learners was to execute instructors’ assignment without proper guidelines, while others found that the use of too many slides presentation and too wordy information presented by instructors were a hindrance to their classroom learning. Besides that, it was also discovered that all infographics features including the use of images and symbols, good design, attractive colors, concise texts and diagram, or chart could encourage learners to understand better with any learning information delivered through it. Finally, the acceptance of learners about infographics application in facilitating their learning sessions was most appreciated due to its high suitability to make information concise and coherent, it enhances creativity and productivity, and improves understanding and concentration in the learning session. Therefore, infographics should be promoted as one of the tools to ease learners’ problems especially those that involve learners with tendency of having visual literacy skills.

... According to Ferreira (2014), using an infographic or information graphic, a visual that elucidates facts with design, can help people and organizations convey ideas to their audience simply and efficiently. Noh et al. (2015) say that infographics should be utilized in higher education institutions' teaching and learning process. Students can utilize infographics as an alternative to other visual literacy materials to pique their interest in reading. ...
... While maintaining the requirement to provide a stimulating and engaging learning environment, the primary goal of employing technology in education is to enhance the process of knowledge transfer from teachers to students (Fadiran, Biljon, & Schoeman, 2020;Ghavifekr & Rosdy, 2015;Noh et al., 2015). Additionally, technology development has given rise to a diverse range of media for teaching and learning about reading, including static and animated texts, audio stories, static diagrams, photos, photographs, animations, and videos. ...
... Infographics' diversity regarding how information is represented allows ideas to be communicated to everyone regardless of educational background. Noh et al. (2015) stated that infographics' versatility is due to its three key elements, namely i) content, explanatory texts, data etc., ii) visual components, selected graphics/pictures, graphs, arrows etc., and iii) knowledge, embedded messages, conclusions, summaries etc. These components not only aid in imparting knowledge to the intended audience efficiently but are also simple to control or modify to meet the audience's demands. ...

In contemporary instructional programs for teaching English as Foreign Language (EFL) all over the world, the application of infographics has become essential for improving students' language skills, in particular reading and writing skills. In many countries worldwide, students have been encouraged through the use of infographics in their English language courses to achieve a high level of proficiency and become competent language learners. This research study aims to examine the influence of integrating infographics into the EFL reading and writing courses. To achieve this aim, the research study focuses on a systematic literature review by investigating 21 papers in the field of teaching EFL. Since students are allowed to use only English for communication in class, it appears to many students as a difficult language to learn. The findings of the literature survey indicate that one of the main obstacles to learning a foreign language seems to be the learners' native language, which must also be considered in organizing foreign language teaching curricula. Another obstacle is that learners have limited opportunities to use their English in reading and writing skills outside the classroom.

... Despite the fact that the researchers did not use any special methodology or pattern for the evaluation, it is possible to conclude that infographics is a very effective and practical method of communicating information to a wide audience using various visual elements, such as images, graphs, tables, texts, etc. Thus, infographics are actively and effectively used to present data-driven stories in the social [9], [12], medicine [12] and education [10], [11] spheres. This is achieved primarily due to the idea of presenting complex data in a convenient and, above all, interesting form [12]. Infographics are accepted as an efficient way to understand data both by aged people [9] and students [10]. ...

Data visualization is a very relevant topic in today’s world full of data, people see this data in different forms and visualizations. Many studies examine different visualizations and bring new ones to the community. Nowadays it is vital to evaluate the types of visualizations and make decisions about what visualization to use based on the conducted analysis. That is why the evaluation of various types of visualization is an important and interesting topic that has been touched upon in various scientific papers. Since there is no clearly defined list of visualization types in the scientific community, and more importantly – methods for their evaluation, this issue is relevant for further study. This paper describes an experiment conducted amongst 9 respondents to examine the visualization evaluation method using Bloom’s taxonomy (which includes six levels of understanding). The study was inspired by an article written by Burns et al. where the authors apply a framework (based on these six levels of understanding) to evaluate the efficacy of data visualizations. Our experiment consisted of a set of questionnaires about the “classic” data visualization (bar chart) and two more modern and complex ones - infographics and data comics. We wanted to compare them by testing the understanding and perception of presented data by our participants, so all used visualizations have been created on the same data set related to Covid-19 statistics. Even though our research has several limitations we obtained interesting results and insights not only about the types of visualizations but also about the evaluation methodology itself.KeywordsVisualizationData VisualizationEvaluation of VisualizationInfographicsData ComicsBloom’s TaxonomyLevels of Understanding

Objectives: Compare the clinical and cost-effectiveness of an established face to face (F2F) structured education program to a new remote (VIRTUAL) program teaching dynamic glucose management (DynamicGM) to children and young people with type 1 diabetes (CYPD) using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). To ascertain the most effective DynamicGM strategies predicting time in range (TIR) (3.9-10.0 mmol/L) and incorporating these into a user-friendly teaching aid. Design and methods: Effectiveness of the F2F and VIRTUAL programs were ascertained by comparing the mean change (Δ) from baseline to six months in HbA1c, TIR and severe hypoglycaemia. Delivery cost for the two programs were evaluated. Factors predicting TIR in the combined cohort were determined and incorporated into a user-friendly infographic. Results: First fifty graduates per group were evaluated. The mean difference in Δ HbA1c, Δ TIR and Δ episodes of severe hypoglycaemia between VIRTUAL and F2F groups were 1.16 (p=0.47), 0.76 (p=0.78) and -0.06 (p=0.61) respectively. Delivery cost per 50 CYPD for VIRTUAL and F2F were 5752and5752 and 7,020 respectively. The strongest predictors of TIR (n=100) were short bursts of exercise (10-40 minutes) to lower hyperglycaemia (p<0.001), using trend arrow adjustment tools (p<0.001) and adjusting pre-meal bolus timing based on trend arrows (p=0.006). These strategies were translated into a GAME (Stop highs), SET (Stay in target), MATCH (Prevent lows) mnemonic. Conclusion: Teaching DynamicGM VIRTUALLY is just as effective as F2F delivery and cost saving. Short bursts of exercise and using CGM trend arrows to adjust insulin dose and timing improves TIR. Background: Assent should be obtained in all children involved in research in keeping with their level of maturity. Traditional assent forms contain too much information and are difficult to read. The study aimed to identify an effective tool to enhance children's comprehension during the assent process and focused on those with cancer who are likely more engaged in research involving greater than minimal risk. Methods: In all, 116 children with cancer were randomized to receive either a paper-based assent document or a multimedia-based assent document. Open-ended and multiple-choice questions were used to assess comprehension and recall. Time spent on the documents and children's behavior during the assent process was recorded to determine their attention and satisfaction. Results: Children randomized to a multimedia-based assent document achieved significant higher comprehension and recall assessment scores (p-values <.001). The high score achievement significantly correlated with the child's age with adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 1.90 (p-value <.001; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.35-2.66) for comprehension assessment and 1.59 (p-value .001; 95% CI: 1.20-2.12) for recall assessment. Children randomized to a multimedia-based assent document had significant longer time spent on the document (p-value .001) with less numbers of inattention (p-value <.001) and expressed more signs of enjoyment during the assent process (p-values <.001). Conclusion: Multimedia-based assent document successfully enhanced comprehension, recall, and attention with more satisfaction compared with a traditional paper-based document among children with cancer. This approach may be considered as an alternative format for children engaging in research involving greater than minimal risk.

This research aims to address the benefits of Bite-sized infographics in English narrative. In connection to this, narrative literature is a type of long-form content; therefore, bite-sized infographics are needed. It is effective in summarizing or outlining the plots using a variety of offered graphs. Learners who are having a hard time focusing can now easily get the important details in a narrative work with the use of this teaching tool. Elaborative interrogation is an innovative teaching strategy just like the bite-sized content. Considering, the most visible difference between the two would be its purpose and medium of delivering its purpose. "Bite-sized" aims to make the information schematic using "graphics" as its medium while the "Elaborative Interrogation" objective is to go deeper in the discussion and learning through the "expansion of questions". This technique expands the "how" and "why" questions more frequently than the other type of questions (McPheat, S., 2017). The study was conducted at Kaypian National High School in the Division of San Jose del Monte City, Bulacan. In particular, thirty (30) enrolled Grade 8-Onyx's learners are intentionally selected in the conduct of the study in English 8 on the 1st quarter of the school year 2021-2022 and became the respondents of the study. This study evaluated the effectiveness of Contextualized Infographic Bite-Size Elaborative Interrogation as an Innovative Strategy in Teaching English Narratives and as an instructional tool in improving the learners' understanding as revealed by their pretest and posttest mean scores, and to answer if there's a significant difference between the pretest and posttest mean scores. Lastly, the researchers selected the respondents by the means of purposive sampling. The climax of the research was guided by the justified five-point Likert scale questionnaire and self-customized multiple-choice questionnaires, validated by the master teacher and the researchers' adviser, as pre-test and post-taken by the learners and curated to assess the stated problems of the study. This research revealed that as the world ages, hence the revolution of students' needs and education system. In today's digital motion, an infographic bite-sized elaborative interrogation is just a piece of an abundance of newly developed innovations to help students understand the lessons specifically the narrative texts as the center of this research. All of the data considered, the innovation tackled in this study is effective in igniting comprehension but still needs several considerations. Just like the other teaching materials, IBSEI (Infographic Bite-Sized Elaborative Interrogation) has its strengths and limitation. This study not only provides an idea for a new medium of instruction but also serves as an advocate to seek better ways towards the bright future of the learners.

Purpose This study aims to explore the potential use of infographics as a technology-based information dissemination tool in Egyptian public university libraries. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative approach was used in the form of a survey conducted in February 202. The survey tool was a self-administrated questionnaire. The study sample consisted of valid responses from 231 library staff. Of this number, 173 (74.9%) were infographics users, and 58 (25.1%) were infographics users. Findings Infographics users tended to be males between 31 and 45 years of age, mostly BA holders, librarians, with work experience ranging from 11 to 25 years. On the other hand, infographics nonusers tended to be also males between 31 and 45 years of age, mostly BA holders, librarians, with work experience ranging from 11 to 25 years. The majority of library staff used infographics mainly to provide information about the library's map, news, services, events, contact, working hours, policies and activities, to provide guidance, instructions on the library use, explain its classification scheme and provide statistical data. The largest number of library staff indicated that their use of informational infographics ranged from “Completely used” to “Most used”, followed by statistical infographics and timeline infographics The use of informational infographics and statistical infographics described to be at least fairly easy to them. In addition, the use of timeline infographics, statistical infographics and informational infographics has also been described to at least fairly useful to them. A very large number of infographics users indicated that these means are attractive, effective, persuasive, focused, easy to embed, easy to read, artistic, easy to track, highly digestible data, easily shareable, easily rememberable, informative and understandable. About two-thirds of infographics users showed that they provided infographics through a computer-based format, followed by both printed and computer-based formats, and printed format. Barriers, such as lack of awareness of infographics, lack of knowledge about infographics, lack of time needed and lack of necessary technical skills, have been described as the greatest barriers to the use of infographics by library staff. Originality/value This study is one of the very few studies concerned with the potential role of using infographics in Egyptian public university libraries, which relates to the presentation of information in the library environment.

Mental illness among elite and intercollegiate student-athletes is of growing concern, as researchers have found high rates of anxiety, depression, and eating disorders among this population. As a result, a call has been made for sport psychology consultants (SPC) to increase their contribution to promoting athletes’ mental health. Infographics can be used as a mental health promotional tool given their ability to visually communicate complex information. This paper draws on the infographic literature in healthcare and education to provide SPC with recommendations for creating infographics to promote mental health among elite and student-athletes with whom they consult. Tips are also provided on effective implementation of infographics in the sport environment.

Some of the significant mistakes committed by faculty members in teaching students are discussed. The first mistake committed by teachers is that they call for volunteers, when they ask questions in the classroom. This process leads to students avoiding to volunteer and interact with their teachers. Some teachers commit the mistake of discontinuing their lecture and asking certain students, to explain the next step. It is observed that many students face significant problems under such circumstances and are unable to answer the question or remember their names. It is suggested that teachers can improve the knowledge of students by focusing on interactive learning. Another significant mistake committed by teachers is that they fail to add variety to their instruction methods and unable to motivate students.

Some of the significant mistakes that engineering instructors need to avoid during teaching engineering students, are discussed. An engineering student who is more careful and methodical but slow in problem solving may become a good engineer instead of those who are quick but careless. Instructors need to evaluate their students by conducting test about student's mastery of the knowledge and skills of subjects instead of their problem-solving speed. They also need to adopt new developments in course subjects, new skills, and improved teaching techniques to enhance their teaching strategies. Instructors can attend education sessions at professional conferences, read articles of educational journals, and use digital libraries to improve tutorials, demonstrations, and simulations of engineering courses. Instructors need to show great respect and care toward their students, which can further improve student's interest.

There have been a range of different types of visual tools used in schools over the past 50 years such as “graphic organizers,” mind mapping, and concept mapping. These tools are grounded in the mapping metaphor, reflecting our capacities to network information and create cognitive maps of content knowledge and concepts. This writing investigates a language of eight cognitive maps called Thinking Maps® and Thinking Maps® Software, used from early grades through college courses to foster cognitive development and content learning across disciplines by all students across entire schools.

Research reported in educational literature suggests that using visuals in teaching results in a greater degree of learning. The basic premise of this body of research is the concept of visual literacy, defined as the ability to interpret images as well as to generate images for communicating ideas and concepts. This paper provides an introduction to visual literacy and includes a review of studies that investigate the effects of instruction that incorporates varying degrees of visual components including no visual support, still visual aids, and animated visual sequences. The purpose of this literature review is to stimulate interest in using visual enhancements in teaching and to promote the development of learners' visual skills in combination with their development of verbal, reading, and mathematical skills. During a rehearsal of Debussy's La Mer, Toscanini found himself unable to describe the effect he hoped to achieve from a particular passage. After a moment's thought, he took a silk handkerchief from his pocket and tossed it high into the air. The orchestra, mesmerized, watched the slow, graceful descent of the silken square. Toscanini smiled with satisfaction as it finally

Despite a long tradition of effectiveness in laboratory tests, normative messages have had mixed success in changing behavior in field contexts, with some studies showing boomerang effects. To test a theoretical account of this inconsistency, we conducted a field experiment in which normative messages were used to promote household energy conservation. As predicted, a descriptive normative message detailing average neighborhood usage produced either desirable energy savings or the undesirable boomerang effect, depending on whether households were already consuming at a low or high rate. Also as predicted, adding an injunctive message (conveying social approval or disapproval) eliminated the boomerang effect. The results offer an explanation for the mixed success of persuasive appeals based on social norms and suggest how such appeals should be properly crafted.
