Cyberspace and Cyberculture
These concepts work as metaphors for covering not just the multitude of types of
communication and contents developed by fusing the Internet with a variety of devices,
but also their users/producers and the values that are being built on line. The prefix
“cyber”, means piloting or governing and comes from the word cybernetics, defined by
Norman Weiner in 1948 as the science of control and communication in the animal and
the machine. Cyberspace approach the skeleton of Internet by comprising the new
communication media, from its infrastructure to its social use, while Cyberculture
embraces the set of practices, attitudes, modes of thought and values that grow along
with the Cyberspace. By keeping in mind the interplay between these concepts,
interactions between technology and culture become apparent.
Cyberspace
This term was coined by William Gibson in his novel Neuromancer (1984), where he
envisioned it as a graphical representation of data abstracted from the banks of every
computer in the human system. Simply explained, by referring to new medium of
communication which arose through the global interconnection of computers,
cyberspace describes the non-physical field created by computer systems and the users
who navigate and nourish it.
Each day, more people access to the Internet. According to Internet Usage
Statistics, the number of users has grown 444, 8 per cent since the year 2000. Most of
the internet users are from Asia (42, per cent), followed by Europe (24, 2 per cent) and
North America (13, 54 per cent). The rest of users are distributed between Latin
America/Caribbean (10, 4 per cent), Africa (5, 6 per cent) and Oceania/Australia (1 per
cent). At the time of the writing of this entry, the penetration of Internet in the world is
of 28, 7 per cent. Therefore, in a world population of 6,845,609,960 persons, there are
1,966,514,816 internet users.
Without forgetting that a high number of people do not have a role in the
cyberspace, the spread of wireless communication technology around the world is
provoking a surge of horizontal networks of interactive communication, whereby

millions of people share messages both synchronous and asynchronous, via e-mails,
chats, sms, blogs, vlogs, podcasts, wikis, and the like.
Women have been part of cyberspace for many years and for different reasons,
among them; maintaining and establishing relationships, as concluded a research carried
in the year 2000 by Pew Internet Institute and as it is expressed in a investigation
conducted by Brian Solis in 2009, where was found that devices as facebook, flikr,
friendfeed, doc stoc, myspace.com or twitter are more used by women than by men.
People by being part of networks, by acceding to the huge and diverse content
available on the Internet can share ideas and information for facing different situations.
Furthermore, by being online it is possible to achieve actions as buying, studying for a
degree or searching for a job. These facilities offer both, women and men more
autonomy, affecting the performance of genre and therefore, making possible the
betterment of the situation of women in several issues. Thus, women who live in
isolated regions, can now access to information and to opportunities that, without the
resources which conform and build the cyberspace, would be not possible.
Understanding gender as a dynamic concept, therein, under constantly
redefinition by the meanings that people provides to it, through its performance in
different contexts; we become aware of the role that new technologies and their users
have in the construction of the gender. Because of the easiness for establishing and
mantaining communication, the conception of gender which each user has can be
broaden by interacting with others who have similar or vastly different attitudes,
behaviors and customs.
Apart from the possibility to do several tasks by being online, improving the
management of the time and permitting to meet different objectives, without being
limited by the characteristics of the living place, cyberspace is also an arena for
dialoguing and for enforcing meanings. The inexistence of national/local boundaries in
this environment encourages and facilitates the performance of conversations between
people who belong to pretty different cultures.
Cyberculture
Cyberculture comprises a set of technologies, material and intellectual, practices,
attitudes, modes of thought and values developed along with the growth of cyberspace,
a non place where people from several places, with pretty different cultures, values of

all sorts and habits, coexist and communicate. Cyberculture has utterance by practices
included but not limited to global sharing, distributed creation, social networking,
streaming, mass collaboration, collaborative assessment, social bookmarking or cloud
computing. These routines encourage commitment, participation and empathy; making
us irrevocably involved with and responsible for each other and provoking that
experiences lived on cyberspace have an influence into ourselves, by changing the way
we think, the form of our communities, and our very identities.
By using social networks, by accessing virtual worlds, by publishing their ideas
on blogs or websites, people share their thoughts, allowing others to know and to
integrate them. Therefore, users who are far away geographically, can be closer by
sharing a message through the multiple tools or devices available.
Pierre Levy situates the core of Cyberculture in the fact that it embodies a new
universality not based on the fixity and independence of signification, but built and
extended by interconnecting messages through virtual communities, provoking the
continuous renewal of the meanings and the performance of a Collective Intelligence,
whereby people share their individual expertise in order to meet shared goals and
objectives.
Though seem adequate consider new technologies as a resource to develop
dialogues between cultures more easily in comparison with physical world, it is needed
bear in mind that many people are not engaged in the Cyberculture not just because they
are not users of the Internet but because in the countries where they life, there are
restrictions to access to determinate contents. Thus, empirical research carried out by
OpenNet Initiative in 2006, has found evidence of technical filtering in twenty six of the
forty countries which were analyzed, being “women rights”, one of the categories
subject to this internet filtering. Although cyberculture, that is, users, generate its own
resources to face situations as the denied content by designing tools which allow people
to access to the websites which are forbidden where they live, this research cited puts in
evidence the interplay between virtual and physical world and, therein makes is visible
the fault of considering technology as an entity which has effects on society and the
suitability of adopting an approach which covers the multitude of human agents who
variously invent, produce, use and interpret technologies.
Cyberculture is thus in feedback with habits and ways of behaving performed in
physical life. Both dimensions are constantly interacting, provoking that their

differences seems to be more slight each day, not just because all cultures, people,
organizations and enterprises want a place on the construction of the cyberculture but
because the widespread of tools and devices which allow us to have ubiquitous
connectivity, making possible that the web is present in our physical world, in our
pockets, in the our cars, etc.
The possibilities that women and men have for communicating, for creating
groups related to their interests, or for claiming regarding issues they are concerned
about, makes cyberculture pretty different in comparison with the broadcasting one,
where few people had voice. Different ideas and types of content have now visibility
and more people can access to several resources which satisfy their varied interests. The
pursuit of gender equality has a role in the cyberculture in its ongoing construction by
women and men form different places of the world, who are communicating their ideas,
showing their thoughts and sharing their experiences.

In the modern era, human has many ways to communicate, interact, and spread the idea. With the advancement of digital technologies, there are various media to convey messages; one of which is through internet memes. The present aims to investigate memes on Instagram through the lense of Critical Discourse Analysis. The objectives are to find out (1) the similarities and differences between Indonesian students and foreign students, (2) to analyze the relationship between pictures and text, and (3) to know the social function of memes. To seek answers, the researchers chose the ten best memes randomly from two Instagram accounts: Best Memes and Zona Mahasiswa” Furthermore, The memes have taken randomly depend on the researchers' needs. The study revealed no significant evidence of differences in education culture between Indonesia's and other countries memes. The results also indicated that the memes were able to serve as a means to communicate people’s activities to the readers. Further, the memes could be a compliment in communication and serve as a media for internet literacy development.

The concept of cultural industries, or creative industries, embraces industries that combine the creation, production, and commercialization of creative content, which can have the form of a good or a service. This term originated from the concept of “culture industry” that was conceptualized by the critical theorists Theodor Adorno (1903–69) and Max Horkheimer (1895–1973). They maintained that mass media had negative effects on people. Adorno and Horkheimer argued that by being spectators of the ideal world that is represented through advertisement and films, citizens forget their own reality and thus become easily manipulated. They argued that mass media had entertainment as an objective because entertainment is meant to be in agreement, and to be in agreement is possible only by insulating itself from the totality of the social process. The cost that was needed to produce a cultural product was very high at 20th century but when a product was done, it was possible to make a lot of copies at low price. This process of production motivated one cultural industry characterized by producing few products for a global market. In this period (1895–1993) mass media had a primary role to exercise power by communicating determinate ideas, advertising products, and ignoring themes or issues that were not of interest. The Internet presents the possibility of a radical switch away from the long-term process of marketing and advertising by decentralizing the capital structure of information, culture, and knowledge.

Resumen Para entender los cambios que, desde la introducción de internet y del desarrollo de diferentes herramientas y recursos se están produciendo en nuestra sociedad es útil acudir a los conceptos de Ciberespacio y de Cibercultura, metáforas que se refieren a la multitud de tipos de comunicación y de contenidos disponibles gracias a la fusión de Internet con una diversidad de herramientas, pero también a sus usuarios, productores y a los valores que se construyen online. Si el Ciberespacio se refiere al esqueleto de Internet, abarcando a los nuevos medios de comunicación, desde su infraestructura a su uso social, la Cibercultura engloba al conjunto de prácticas, actitudes, modos de pensamiento y valores que crecen junto con el Ciberespacio (Lévy, 2001) Estas metáforas abren vías investigadoras que se traducen, por ejemplo, en la posibilidad de identificar cómo el concepto de género se reconstruye gracias a las posibilidades comunicativas que ofrece Internet ”(GómezDiago, 2012) o en comprender la transcendencia que tiene seleccionar las tecnologías que utilizamos. Partiendo de esta última idea, en este texto identificamos algunas de las consecuencias que tiene requerir la enseñanza y/o aprendizaje de software privativo en el aula. Articulamos este trabajo en dos partes, precedidas de un apartado introductorio que; a través del análisis de estudios que revelan el escaso aprovechamiento de las tecnologías de la comunicación y de la información en España; sitúa la necesidad de que la educación universitaria realice su rol en la promoción, el uso y el desarrollo de las herramientas tecnológicas para la generación de una interrelación productiva entre educación y sociedad. A continuación, mediante el estudio de documentos analíticos y programáticos realizados por instituciones y organismos públicos cuya funciones son extender el uso de software no privativo en nuestro país y/o lograr utilización de las nuevas tecnologías que revierta en una mejora social, comprobamos la ausencia de una preocupación acerca del software que se usa en el aula. Por último, aportamos los resultados obtenidos de la realización de un estudio piloto susceptible de ulteriores desarrollos y que fue realizado a partir de la instrucción de un software privativo de diseño gráfico vectorial a alumnos de tercer curso del Grado en Publicidad y Relaciones Públicas en la Universidad de Vigo durante el curso 2011-2012. Abstract To understand the changes occurred in our society since the introduction of the Internet and the development of different tools and resources is useful to go to the concepts of cyberspace and cyberculture, metaphors that refer to many types of communication and content available through the internet merging with a variety of tools, but also to its users, producers and the values that are built online. If Cyberspace refers to the Internet backbone, embracing new media, from infrastructure to social use, Cyberculture comprises all practices, attitudes, ways of thinking and values that grow along with Cyberspace (Lévy, 2001) These metaphors open research roads that result, for example, the possibility of identifying how the concept of gender is reconstructed through the communicative possibilities of the Internet "(Gómez-Diago, 2012) or understanding the significance of selecting the technologies that we use. Following this last idea, in this article, we identify some of the consequences that require education and / or training of proprietary software in the classroom. We articulated the work in two parts, introduced by a section intended to underlie the role of the university education to bolster one type of technology over others and to forge an productive interplay between education and society which provokes a social betterment. This introduction is underpinned by studies conducted by international organizations which give us insights about the lack of applications of new technologies of information and communication in Spain. Then, by analyzing papers and studies carried by public institutions which embrace the use of non-proprietary software in our country, we identify the lack of concern about their use in the classroom. Finally, we shared the outcomes obtained from the experience of instructing vector graphic design proprietary software to students of third year of the Degree in Advertising and Public Relations at the University of Vigo during the academic year 2011-2012 . We detect some of the noticeable constraints that the use of this software impose to the knowledge gained by the students

This article presents a set of grounded hypotheses on the interplay between communication and power relationships in the technological context that characterizes the network society. Based on a selected body of communication literature, and of a number of case studies and examples, it argues that the media have become the social space where power is decided. It shows the direct link between politics, media politics, the politics of scandal, and the crisis of political legitimacy in a global perspective. It also puts forward the notion that the development of interactive, horizontal networks of communication has induced the rise of a new form of communication, mass self-communication, over the Internet and wireless communication networks. Under these conditions, insurgent politics and social movements are able to intervene more decisively in the new communication space. However, corporate media and mainstream politics have also invested in this new communication space. As a result of these processes, mass media and horizontal communication networks are converging. The net outcome of this evolution is a historical shift of the public sphere from the institutional realm to the new communication space.

Many countries around the world block or filter Internet content, denying access to information--often about politics, but also relating to sexuality, culture, or religion--that they deem too sensitive for ordinary citizens. Access Denied documents and analyzes Internet filtering practices in over three dozen countries, offering the first rigorously conducted study of this accelerating trend. Internet filtering takes place in at least forty states worldwide including many countries in Asia and the Middle East and North Africa. Related Internet content control mechanisms are also in place in Canada, the United States and a cluster of countries in Europe. Drawing on a just-completed survey of global Internet filtering undertaken by the OpenNet Initiative (a collaboration of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School, the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto, the Oxford Internet Institute at Oxford University, and the University of Cambridge) and relying on work by regional experts and an extensive network of researchers, Access Denied examines the political, legal, social, and cultural contexts of Internet filtering in these states from a variety of perspectives. Chapters discuss the mechanisms and politics of Internet filtering, the strengths and limitations of the technology that powers it, the relevance of international law, ethical considerations for corporations that supply states with the tools for blocking and filtering, and the implications of Internet filtering for activist communities that increasingly rely on Internet technologies for communicating their missions. Reports on Internet content regulation in forty different countries follow, with each country profile outlining the types of content blocked by category and documenting key findings.
