Abstract

The importance of rural tourism, as a driver for regional development in Andalusia, has had an increasing interest. However, a point mentioned repeatedly but barely studied is the reference to the distance between the place of residence and the municipality in which the tourism develops. This is the core of this article, which tries to know the relationship between the intensity of tourist accommodation and the distance to urban centers. It is also studied if the distance between rural and urban municipalities can be considered a relevant factor to establish the typology of a rural area.

Thoughts about proximity tourism as a strategy for local development ABSTRACT Tourism has traditionally been considered as the activity that allows living non-usual experiences in non-usual places. Since globalization of information facilitates the knowledge of remote territories, a tourist offer to closer and, at the same time, unknown places could improve the valorisation of usual environment, encouraging a development process. This paper introduces proximity tourism from a theoretical approach, through questioning key concepts and suggesting research tools in order to finally relate tourism and local development.

This article shows the evolution of rural tourism in Spain within the European context. This evolution can be divided into different periods that are analysed bearing in mind the rural tourism situation in different autonomous communities. Despite rural tourism in Europe is understood as a mixture of different activities, in Spain we it is still focusing on the accommodation. We conclude that, although its authenticity and quality, the Spanish rural tourism product should be unified and classified in order to achieve a successful promotion and commercialization.
