A comparative study on the common aspects of Baya Suram & Anxiety disorder

The current situation in this Evidence based scientific world requires authenticated documents of Traditional Siddha texts to be mentioned in terms which everyone can understand. In that way, the role and efficacy of Siddha medicines in treating the dreaded fevers such as Chikun-gunya, Dengue, swine flu etc has raised awareness among the public and scientific community regarding the role of more sastric preparations in treating fevers. Fevers, which are 64 in number is further divided into 52 types (Intrinsic) and 12 (extrinsic). Baya suram is one among the extrinsic type of fever and attracts concern through its name (Bayam – Fear/panic, Suram – Fever). This review deals with the symptoms and management of this type of fever as mentioned in Traditional Siddha literatures as compared to scientific documents.

Mitral valve prolapse and panic disorder

Focal neurologic symptoms in panic attacks

Among 350 referrals to a neurology service, 19 (5%) had panic attacks manifesting as focal neurologic symptoms. Diagnostic clues included multiple symptoms, normal results on neurologic examination, personal stress, dietary extremes, age 20-50 years, and symptom reproduction by hyperventilation. Focal neurologic symptoms should not exclude a diagnosis of panic attack.

Impact of life events on subjects with panic disorder and on comparison subjects

A questionnaire measure of major life events was given to 64 subjects with diagnoses of panic disorder with agoraphobia, 33 subjects with other anxiety disorders, and 34 nonanxious subjects. Anxious subjects indicated the life events that had occurred in the 6-month period immediately before their current disorder began and rated the impact of each event on a 7-point scale. There was no significant difference between groups in the number of life events reported. However, anxious subjects rated these events as having a significantly greater negative impact than did nonanxious subjects.

Response to 35% CO2 as a marker of panic in severe anxiety

One inhalation of 35% CO2 was administered to each of 32 patients with high anxiety ratings. Only patients with panic disorder had increases in reported anxiety upon CO2 intake. CO2-triggered anxiety appears specific for panic disorder and independent of baseline anxiety.

If this finding is specific to panic disorder patients, it may be a useful peripheral marker for this condition.
