Milton's religious and aesthetic values in the translation of PSALM 114

Abstract

John Milton's translations of psalms played an important role in the formation of his individual literary style. Milton understood his literary works as the way to worship by God pronouncing his poetic prayers. He recast the texts of some psalms of David in a poetic form but his translations of psalms in fact were the author's "poetic interpretations" of the texts of the Psalter. This poetic technique is not just a method Milton used to work with the texts of psalms. Further investigation of Milton's "interpretative technique" can be very efficient for understanding his individual literary style.
